I can follow the graph and know I left house to catch trolley at 8, trolley ride lasted around 6 minutes then a short walk to office arriving at 9. I can also see when I left cube to go to lab or next building for lunch and what time I walked home for my bigger exercise burst at end of day.

What I can't tell is precise time I tilted Josie, what I am sure of is waffles gets no bar food so he is drinking on an empty stomach.

Monday Observations

Waffles would win a bet with Josie (don't know if it is just drinks or more is involved) if Giants win tonight. I would have previously thought that I should bet everything I have on Cowboys tonight, but I am still trying to wrap my head around how did we not have the Vikings win last night setting up the tie scenario which was biggest loss scenario in waffle's world.

Grats to LJ for another big score.

On poker front I played enough PLO cash two tabling to collect $25 bonus the last 10 days but did not play much more than required.

My newly diagnosed diabetes has shifted my focus away from poker.

Fortunately the apartment has a decent gym for me to do back, chest and arms exercise as I am trying to lift each day to get my muscles to remove more glucose from my bloodstream. Each weekend I have been going to my local 24 Hour Fitness to work my legs. I overdid it a bit as going upstairs is painful and traveling downstairs is brutal.

Family had a nice dinner at the Chakos last night. It was enjoyable watching game with a Favre fan and a Packer fan and also good test to see if I could adhere to my new carbohydrate restrictions.

I am not sure how well Las Vegas will work if I can't consume Sam Adams (18g/12 oz), Miller Lite and Michelob Ultra just don't appeal to me. At least bourbon has no carbs so I may be able to adjust but in all likelihood if I seem passed out at WPBT someone should get me an apple juice or an orange juice.

Congrats to Populous

Populous is the architectural firm that designed the New Yankee Stadium. They did a magnificent job in designing for a speedy exit as the fair weather fans leave each ALCS game bitterly disappointed.

Bravo.

Poker Play is still very light but could not pass up Full Tilts Take 2 promotion. 5 points/day multi-tabling (2 counts) takes no time even at .1/.25 seems trivial. Crossed the $5 threshold now need 4 more days for the next $20.

Work is consuming a lot of time, apparently at new job getting "ping" through the system is huge. It does mean data path is working so we are 1 step close to bringing poker, facebook and porn to the masses at higher bandwidth.

106 left, 90 paid, I think calling button jam from small blind with TT is correct move.

I would promise to post results of hand tomorrow after everyone has a chance to comment.

But after 30 minutes I still had not connected so went to bed.

Bruins Victory

Demon Child's Homecoming was tonight. The "mighty" Santa Clara Bruins and Monte Vista Matadors put on a delay of offensive ineptitude for 3 quarters that was painful to watch. The only time either team moved the ball was the Matadors completed a long pass when one WR had ball bounce off his hands but another Matador wide receiver caught the ball ~3 yards away. I don't recall saying many plays designed that put 2 WR that close together 30 yards downfield.

Trailing 3-0 Santa Clara put together a decent touch down drive and on their next possession drove down to 1st and down at 6. After gaining 2 yards on 3 plays coach decided to go for it on 4th down with 4 minutes left. Can't imagine what thinking was the kicker had put extra point dead center early in 4th.

Monte Vista had a nice 90 yard drive but stalled in final minutes preventing a crushed demon child and preserving a Santa Clara victory.

New Prioities

I recently read that Lightning is going to get healthier.

If an old man like lightbulb can start exercising I can too, especially since I get more temperate weather.

Now I just need wife to not sabotage by being all whiny when I won't give her a ride to doctor's office for blood test because I want to walk to trolley stop. I did offer to walk with her to office before work as it is only about quarter mile from my usual trolley stop at 2nd stop.

If she really wanted to take car she should have gotten made a 2nd attempt to pass written driving test.

Poker play should drop off as I sacrifice it to exercise, but I am getting tired of having gut shot draws shove on flop and get there against me anyways.

My High School Reunion

Between Dad working at IBM and then changing jobs every few years I went to 3 elementary Schools, 2 Jr High Schools and 2 High Schools, lived in North Carolina, Maryland, Florida and Massachusetts during that span.

Westford Academy Class of 1980 is holding it's 30th Reunion this weekend.

I only spent 2.5 years there and spent 1st 5 months adjusting to the cold as moving from Orlando in Dec 1977 to enjoy some of the biggest snowfalls Massachusetts had seen in February 1978 did not prompt me to go outside. Eventually I did start playing Hockey on local pond but I had no skates (nor ability to skate) which limited me to playing goalie. My only other activities were the Chess Team and the 'Math Team' so I only really met a few people because I was still bummed to have moved away from another set of friends.

Late in my Sophmore year Mom told me that they would not be able to afford to send me to college. I started to work there the beginning of summer and through most of Jr. year, worked at a gas station 4-11 Friday, 8-8 Saturday and 8 until closing Sunday in an effort to save money on my own for college. I did get to know a few more people but not many and I was always too nasty to go directly out on Saturday and was really too tired after getting cleaned up at home.

Sr year I decided to try to get ROTC scholarship so went on Scarsdale diet (dropping 40 lbs) which I had gained since leaving Florida. I decided to apply to Georgia Tech (because Uncle Jerry went there and application was free), I was accepted couple of weeks after I mailed application so I only ended up applying to a few other schools as Georgia Tech out of state was cheaper than U Mass in state. January of Sr year Dad changed jobs and was working in Virginia and coming to Mass ~every 2 weeks. Knowing I would soon be moving away again and going to school even further away I wasn't anti-social but was pretty sure I would not be seeing most of my classmates any time soon.

It is really strange to me that I am as saddened as I am that I am not going to reunion. When I reflect back on it there were maybe 20 people in my graduating class and another 10 from other years that I spent any time with. I have a bad habit of starting a new job a few months before milestone reunions so I have little vacation time and board I designed is not quite functioning well enough for me to take the days off required to fly cross country.

There are a few people I would like to see again and a few that I honestly know more from Facebook than my time in Westford that I would like to see.

I am wasting another opportunity to connect with people who have something in common.

Hopefully I'll make the next one.

Cousin Hugh

My Uncle Bobby got married for the 2nd time this past weekend. He is only 9 years older than me as my Mom was oldest of 4 children with Bobby being the youngest and probably a surprise late addition.

Bobby's 1st marriage lasted ~25 years but I didn't meet 1st wife until couple of years before divorce because he never told anyone in family that he was married (nor did we know his address)

Dysfunctional is a word I understand too well.

Bobby did have a son from 1st marriage who my sister and Mom met for the 1st time this weekend.

My Mom sent me a picture attached to an email:

"There are two pictures in the batch that are your cousin, Hugh. He is 29 years old. Jackie is the bride's name. I thought I had Jessica and Angela and Cyndi in one picture, but it came up blank.

Mom"

Make me wonder a little about my Mom's computer savvy, but Hugh did wear a nice pair of boots to his dad's wedding.

Week 1 wrap up

My conclusions from the weekend:

1.) Georgia Tech has to get better on defense if they want winning record this year.
2.) Being able to complete a few passes would also be helpful.
3.) James Madison just did a number on Boise State making BCS Championship.
4.) NY Jets and Dallas Cowboys can cancel previously announced Super Bowl parades.
5.) AFC West and NFC West are still worst 2 divisions.
6.) Red Zone Channel still a godsend when local stations have shitty games.
7.) Week 1 had a lot of shitty games.

Most importantly Calvin Johnson caught that ball, Detroit was robbed.

I am in 4 fantasy football leagues and have Calvin in the 2 priciest ones.
Hoy made a good point, I ended up watching a shitty Redskins-Cowboys game, a less adept Jets Ravens battle and Chiefs-Chargers which main redeemable feature was watching KC rookie kick returners all as I sweated out fantasy results.

4-0 finish is nice but now I have to look for replacement QBs for one squad.

Monday

I started Monday pretty excited.

Got to watch the news and hear that Paris Hilton got busted for possession of cocaine because while dude driving was stopped she reached into purse and accidentally spilled vial of cocaine into plain sight of officer. All because she needed lip balm. Question I have is: "If it wasn't your purse Paris then why the fuck were you reaching for lip balm?"

I got to go to my 1st Business Unit meeting as an employee, it is sort of nice to see why they are pushing so many projects through engineering at once from a how they feel it fits in network vision.

Wife was kind enough to call frantically right at the tail end of the meeting, I intentionally did not cancel health insurance policy yet as I wanted to make sure I had the Anthem/Blue Cross proof of coverage before I backdated cancelled Kaiser and moved on the the employer coverage provided by Cisco. One lesson learned from working for a Canadian company is they don't know shit about US Health Insurance differences, and apparently think bills can be paid with apologies when they forget to pay vacation or reimburse for individual health insurance.

My 1st fantasy football draft is about to start, I woke up this morning in a 10 team league and now I have the 12th pick.

Hoy claims to run bad but he'd be hard pressed to top that!

Small Ball Poker

I recently noticed that I have not had to use my FullTilt points on tourney entries to replenish bankroll and had creeped up to quantity to get ipod (Nano 8G).

I also observed a few time periods of double points for rush poker as well as 'late night' double points 8-10 Pacific.

After careful consideration I think I prefer 8G ipod Touch at 45k points over 16G ipod Nano at 41k points.

Since Friday night I have gotten in 5k hands of rush PLO, cranked out 6k points once you factor in bonus and probably rarned $150 in rake back. Now I have to figure out a few things.
1) Am I better off buying ipod from local Crapple store with rakeback cash?
2) How many value bets am I missing on river to have the disparity I have in showdown winnings vs. pots w/o showdon?
3) Is real problem calling too much pre-flop or after turn ith speculative hands?

Other financial matter to figure out is Cisco's 401k provider allows me to set different contribution percentage for bonus vs. salary.

Would I rather set % same for both or set salary % to 5% to collect matching 4.5% and bonus contribution to 35-70% to hit yearly ceiling as they seem to provide information on what bonus gross will be a month before payout?

1st Week Draws to close

I am happier at my new job than this guy.

My thinking when I left Petaluma in 2006 was that:
1) I was going to work as an engineer until I retired.
2) When I gave up on start-ups I would work at Cisco or Google.

With start of 1st college football season without Bobby Bowden on sidelines I am reminded that I think it was Bear, JoePa or Bowden that said there is only one milestone left in life after retirement.

I sort of feel I am down to two milestones left.

"Jimmy you are such an asshole"

I had a 10:00 wake up call but woke up at 6:30 this morning. Dude sharing room next door with Jimmy was not pleased that he could not get into room because Jimmy had thrown the brass lock.
10 minutes of escalating frustration door banging and profanity. I looked through peephole first and saw he had 2 girls in official Vegas uniform (little black dress) and at that point was not sure if Jimmy was passed out or seen the friend whose personality could not have been good enough to compensate. I am getting old and decided rather than confront to just call the front desk to get someone sent up to help these clowns.

Sunday night I played 'Rapid Craps' at Bill's Gambling Saloon.
14 chairs playing online craps except the dice and roll are traditional.
Casino advantage is that only took one guy to run a craps table has he has stick to pass dice and enters roll into his screen and he takes chips to enter starting amount and pays you out in chips at end. New craps players can figure out betting on their own time.
Player advantage is no clowns get their hands in to interfere with dice and it was $3 table where $3.60 place on 6/8 paid $4.20 but flow was neither rapid nor generated excitement.

Overall trip was awesome as Paul was rolling 4s and 9s at a way more than expected pace and I managed to cash big time as he went on a 6 4s in 7 rolls tear at Hard Rock when I also managed to start with $25 on 4.

Never did see or hear Jimmy he might not be the asshole.

It's not you it's me

I am 'changing' jobs but not cubes.

I have no idea if design services firm end game plan was me consulting at Cisco when they hired me. But I have now set a new record for shortest job tenure at 11 months. Since 3.5 months were mile down the street and last 7 months were in Cisco building I don't think it will reflect badly on resume. I just got returned to my old working environment and did well enough that Cisco and I decided to split up the money that used to go through two middlemen.

Old CEO is taking it quite personally that I am leaving but I am guessing people don't change jobs as easily in Ottawa as happens in Bay Area. My favorite line from meeting where he made counter offer was "If you had asked for money I would have given you raise", this is same CEO that called me at 5:30 am on an April Saturday morning and asked "Are you busy? Dave isn't here yet to take me to airport". I was still groggy so did not really have time to generate good response before I was interrupted due to Dave's arrival wherever CEO was.

I discussed counter offer with wife enough to get help with explaining situation to CEO. Her first suggestion was "we can still be friends", I countered with "It's not you it's me". She had already approved my letter of resignation as being good for not burning bridges, my direct boss Dave took it rather well, especially considering he takes a commission hit when I leave as well. But he knows the health insurance jerk around we have been dealing with the last 4 months has pissed me off and there was always a risk putting me back in work environment that I had been comfortable in for 20 years.

I now have 4 job departures in under 18 months on the resume, only other time I left a job voluntarily I was there 13 years. My average is really looking bad, but I think this latest stint is easily explainable and want to keep this job a while.

I do head to Las Vegas Thursday with some old co-workers but I am left wondering HTF did we end up going during a Star Trek convention. Would not have known except my cousin lamented not going on her facebook status.

Garden City Live Poker

$3/$6 Limit can have only 2 possible outcomes:

1) Slowly bleeding money as house takes $5 rake out of any pot with flop.
2) Hemorrhaging money in few hands as one of 6 people calling pre-flop capped action rivers his non-Ace high, non paint high flush.

It was amusingly bad but you have to hit hands early and get up before rake chews you up. My peak was ahead $75 after my turned boat held up against rivered flush that 2 people chased.

Ethics in investing

Having read BP was hopeful that cap being placed earlier today would be able to contain oil and it being options expiration week I decided to make a small "investment" that they would be successful and stock would pop this week.

Strike price being $38 and cost being 68 cents it seemed like they will jump to $40 if cap is success and at 33% break even prop.

Real question is when will Congress pass UISEC if this shit is legal and online poker is not?

My bankroll management rules are much stricter than my poker so this is a sub 1% play but will make news more interesting this week.

"Math is Stupid"

  • sirfwalgman: math is stupid
  • sirfwalgman: "I have two children, one is a boy who prefers the colour Red. What is the probability I have two boys".

As we know, without the modifier, the probability is 1/3*

    BB
    BG
    GB
  • sirfwalgman: it's 50/50 that your other kid is a boy period right?
  • sirfwalgman: and whats the difference between BG and GB
  • Me: it is 5050 that you have 1 boy if 1 child
  • Me: it is also 50/50 2nd child is boy
  • Me: it is the classic Let's Make a deal Monty Hall problem
  • sirfwalgman: not according to moronic statistics people
  • Me: dude
  • sirfwalgman: I am currently idle.
  • sirfwalgman: ya
  • Me: you fail to understanbd either problem
  • sirfwalgman: aparently
  • Me: if you have 2 children it is 25 % you will have 2 girls, 25% you will have 2 boys
  • Me: and 50% you have one of each
  • Me: do we agree?
  • sirfwalgman: i said that
  • Me: If child is already born than you have case where questioner intentionally picked boy
  • Me: so there are 3 cases available
  • Me: and 2 of the cases other child is girl
  • Me: but probability of future child being boy is 50/50
  • Me: because questioner has no control

  • I spend a little too much of my time each day trying to explain probabilities to waffles.

Probability from work yesterday:
Project manager came back from his vacation yesterday.
Odds of him applying pressure on slowest part of project when he returned is obviously 100%
(Similar odds of me missing VeryJosie and Mookie also 100%)

One of task was to help newest member of project team get the 10 people who have to approve a board being ready for build to sign off.

I was assigned 4 names randomly, 2 other people got 3 names.

Half of the 10 people had already approved.

What were the odds my 4 randomly assigned people had already approved?
Waffles don't even waste your time answering.

Even the Yankees got me a Birthday Present

I heard an awesome story on Jim Rome this morning which led me to this.

Hate the Yankees, hate cell phone zombies, win win.
