Donkey Island Tipping Point

I will miss the Mookie to attend Sharks v Flames. So wanted to play but one of managers surrendered his seat in the Suite so I must experience Hockey like the fat cats.

Everyone who watches Survivor regularly knows that the safest person tonight is Muchtim.
The sole remaining member of a team always gets to decide which pair to swing the power to of the 4 man team. It is strategy played out every season since the 1st when Susan and Kelly went to a 2-2 tie with Rudy and Richard.

The lesson is figure out who your best bud is and throw your other two team members out as other goes next challenge and then it is you, best bud and much fighting for that last immunity and choosing heads up opponent.

Clearly if you are looking at vote to win Josie gets thrown under the bus. But if it comes down to playing Heads Up poker for the win you toss SmBoatDrinks.

More Restful Sleep Ahead

I got home tilted from work but now I am very relaxed.

I think a little money should go to Japan and a little should go to craps.

Decided to follow the George Costanza model and leave on a high note.

I sleep a lot better after win normally.

My Valentine's gift to wife was to do something about my snoring. Washington's Birthday weekend I was in a 'sleep study'. A fascinating process where 4 sensors were strapped to my legs, 3 to my chest, 6 more table to my face and 8 GLUED to my head. Nurse took ~45 minutes to get me all hooked up and used a heat gun to help the glue dry. Had a big rainbow ponytail of wires coming off the head.

My performance on test was spectacular as 2 hours into test they slapped mask like the one pictured on. I got my new CPAP last Thursday and my wife and daughter are sleeping a lot better.

Survivor

Apparently Goat needed immunity as they turned on the creator last night.

Gpjacobs, Maloney and I had 35-40 BBs when we agreed to chop.$1 rebuy is brutal just for how deep everyone is late and am not really sure why a 26 peep private tourney pays 3 when an 18 SNG pays 4. Kat was unfortunate victim and it felt like she was in for the most buyins.

My key hands of night were picking up AA in BB and having Mr How to fold KK not fold 99 and then winning flip at final table against Kat.

March 1 Weight

Warning there is a picture of feet again!

But not until bottom.

Goal for the year of 52 pounds still seems achievable but have finally figured out what "on pace" would mean.

A calorie deficit of 134750 works out to 449/day.

I found a chart that helps me examine impact of weight loss on calorie burn:

Activity (1-hour duration)Weight of person and calories burned
160 pounds (73 kilograms)200 pounds (91 kilograms)240 pounds (109 kilograms)
Walking, 3.5 mph 277 346 414

Thank god the chart seems linear so I will assume currently at 260 pounds I will burn 448 calories/hour and at 220 pounds I will 380 calories/hour. But for analysis purposes 410/hour should work as it would be burn over average weight if I reach goal.

Over the last 2 months (other than 2 weeks with calf injury) I walked 12 miles week to achieve calorie deficit of 5250/week so the walking portion of my week will drop from 1627 to 1435. Rest of activity should also consume 8% fewer calories at average weight which would still only be a shade over 400 calories/week hit on deficit.

I am comfortably on pace but long way to go.

Chess

Bayne Waffles
1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 d6
Hate playing against Philidor so choose a rarely used line hoping to transpose.
3. c3
Waffles makes strange choice to move pawn twice in an opening
d5
4. exd5 Qxd5
Now we are into some strange Scandinavian like variant where I can't harass Queen.
5. d4 Nc6
6. dxe5 if you are going to give me pawn it would be rude to decline
6 ..... Qxd1
7. Kxd1 b6
one of waffles other games opponent is crushing him after fianchetto of bishop
8. Bg5 mainly want to bring out Knight without blocking bishop, Bf4 probably better
8 .... f6
9. exf6 trading off overextended pawn to get 2 isolated pawns on waffles kingside
9... gxf6
10. Bf4 diagram

Ne5 - terrible move, just surrenders material
11. Nxe5 fxe5
12. Bxe5 Bg4+
13. Ke1 - terrible move Kc2 so if Bf5 Bd3
Rd8 - terrible move o-o-o clears K from e8 allowing for bishop pin
14. Bb5+ - f3 then take the rook on h8
Kf7
15. Bc4+ - f3 followed by taking Rook on h8 or at least winning Bishop on g5
Kg6
16. f3 Nf6
17. Kf2 Bc5+
18. Kg3 h5
19. Bxf6 Kxf6

take the stupid pawn on g4 and just grind out connected passed pawn
Kg5
22. h4+ Rxh4
23. Na3 Rd2
24. Rf5+ Kxf5
25. Kxh4 Rxg2

26. Rf1+ Bf2+ my punishment for not taking pawn

Kudos to Goat

I made an effort to get home in time to play the Mookie last night. 42 runners last night is a huge step to revitalizing blogger poker and the Survivor Poker has led to some awesome rants, some delusional smack talk, and a lot of chat and prop bets.

Also congrats to JamyHawk for being last Survivor (to quote Josie "Team Donkey may be stacked, but that's not because of YOU JamyHawk" for that I have to add you to blogroll.

Daytona

Growing up in south I should be a bigger fan of Nascar, but I outgrew my need to drive fast when I spun my Ford Escort on I-95 when a retread wrapped around one of my front tires.

Only race I've watched in last 20 years prior to yesterday was the last few laps of Dale Earnhardt's career 10 years ago. There was just nothing spectacular about the crash to indicate that he had died when it happened until you realize the idea of the car body flying all over the place is to absorb the momentum and peel away for the drivers safety.

Watching Trevor Bayne win made for a funny day watching the sports crawler during day whenever they announced Daytona results.

Weekend can't get here fast enough

I got a new task at work, have to be ready March 14 to begin testing. I am one of two HW engineers that will be heavily involved. Other dude has a pregnant wife with a March 13th due date.

Facebook really has changed the world, 1st Egypt then I learned of an Uncle's death yesterday from a cousin's Facebook status message. I tried to call mom immediately after but got no answer. She sent me an email 6 hours later letting me know of Scotty's passing. Death was unexpected but it shouldn't have been, he had a stroke a few years ago and was still drinking hard. I think the two tours in Vietnam haunted him until the end.

Running Props

By now most of us have read:

about the running 70 miles in 24 hours prop bet.

After January 2007 when I watch 4 poker players wagering who would duck last on tail section of rivercat passing under bridges it is easy for me to believe anything is possible when too much money and testosterone is involved.

Grange has opted to shred Haseeb for his role in jeopardizing Ashton's health. I have to admit my 1st reaction to part 1 was to find one of my co-workers to ask him if he could run 70 miles in 24 hours. His answer was "I ran 112 a few years ago". Dude is currently training for the "Deathride" but he is planning to do this on a tandem bike with his 9 year old son.

I have no idea what drives my co-worker to push himself but he does it with no wagers involved.

Ashton and Haseeb are in a community where no one gets out of a bet for free so once the wager is made they do find themselves stuck seeing it through. I think Haseeb wrote his post because he is evaluating the moral implications of what transpired. It will be interesting to see what happens next for Ashton and Haseeb.

Single Parenting

My wife went on a trip to LA returning during Super Bowl leaving me as a single parent (of sorts) for week. Other than an occasional rushed trip to school because someone missed the bus it really didn't seem that difficult.

I did have to prepare dish we brought along to Chako's Super Bowl gathering which featured a few genuine Cheeseheads and a Favre fan front running his way back into fold. Demon Child decided to wear her 49ers jersey to game which seemed strange to me but I decided to throw my Bucs jersey on as well to deflect any teasing. The wife and Demon are not the biggest sports fans in the world but daughter does like playing with puppy and wife got a restful nap during 2nd half. Decent game, it is nice that Super Bowls are not blowouts anymore (although I can speak from experience blowouts are better when you are a fan of team in lead).

I am not ashamed to admit I laughed out loud when this ad played:

Demon did not find ad nearly as funny but others in room may have appreciated.

I did ask daughter if she was going to issue a favorable report on Demon Daddy week. Her response was "Don't get your hopes up". Wife has noticed that although she has been back 3 days she has received no negative reports of the time so may not be so worried about how we will get along next trip.

Hopefully some day I will play poker again and have something worth writing about.

No feet

Sorry Scott can't show progress from wager in weight loss. Having right foot on scale is painful and left supporting most of the weight lead to wide fluctuations in measured weight.

I do have picture of injured calf at bottom of post so those who did not like view of feet should stop reading now.

Last two weeks I have been taking a break from poker, work has been kicking my ass and have had a bad mindset from not being able to exercise. Today at lunchtime my walking returned to a normal gait. There is still a little bit of pain at random intervals and it feels like it is a stabilizing action that causes pain when there is a slight turn to a stride.

I do have IronMan bonus to clear so poker should resume tonight.

Years past I have cleared $600 bonus before 10th of January but at the moment only $150 cleared.

May give up Rush PLO which at times is just a bunch of people playing flush bingo.

Goal 52 Pace

This post started out to have a completely different theme. As of yesterday Morning I had lost 7 pounds this year but more significantly (to me) 40 pounds off my peak weight.

This is the 6th time I have lost 40 pounds while on a health kick but the 1st 3 times my starting weight was less than current weight. Being engineer I am trying to determine if I am really on pace to lose another 45 pounds by year end. When I started this quest in September my calorie burn on a day I walked was ~3700.

This week a walk home day looked like this:

Where Monday which only involves 1 mile walks to trolley stops looked like:

I was going to have to figure out a decaying calorie burn function and figure out if I was really on pace to lose 52 pounds because although I am ahead of 1 pound/week I can only assume my burn rate is also going to slowly drop another 300 calories/day at end.

Instead I will just complain about asshole who made me accelerate quickly and leap as he was not paying attention to pedestrians and missed by just a little bit but my calf has been in a knot since.

Yesterday I figured out I could walk but my gait was similar to chica in 4 inch heels that broke left heel, today I am down to 2 inch heels gait so I have hopes that some form of walking returns next week.

Edit: One of my co-workers visited to check on my injury. Bottom of calf is starting to turn purple. Since co-worker did Iron Man triathlon in 2003 with a broken clavicle I feel like a complete wimp.

Long Frkn Week

12 days off then jumping cold turkey into 5 day work week has been brutal. Managers here are really pressing for us all to things debugged since we are "rested and refreshed".

Some of these same managers forgot to submit paperwork renewing contractors or extending co-ops so half the people I work with have no access to the internal network and it takes 2 days for paperwork to process and another 2 days for passwords to reset.

I also have to adjust to a whole new fresh group of co-ops helping out it the lab and somehow we ended up with group with similar names. So far I usually call one of them "Nautica" because that was shirt he was wearing 1st day, he seems resilient so far and rest of co-ops have decided this will be his nickname for time being.

Poker front has been a scuffle as I work to clear Iron Man bonus, I am +/- $10 of break even once I factor in rakeback and have ~$100 in uncredited bonus earned. Key as always is not to tilt off before bonus is cleared. No clearing bets as the points tard has retired from online poker.

Weight loss front I went from just prior to Thanksgiving to today at -10.4 pounds. Since wife was cooking christmas cookies a bit feels like a huge win. Nurse at doctor's office thought so too but she was concerned about my pulse, apparently there will always be some issue.

Happy New Years

2010 was a pretty good year:

On job front, I have job that I like.

On Dad front as Demon Child has been consistently doing better in school, is healthy and happy.

On husband front wife is driving and back to pre-seizure form.

On health front I would rate year as a positive as although I received diabetes diagnosis it was caught early, it seems treatable and I already feel better after losing a few pounds.

Poker was a loser for the year but it is recreation

I have given careful consideration to what I want to do for resolutions. I thought about setting a goal for running (5k, 10k or half marathon) or to ski with family this year. Realized I have used my weight as an excuse to not do a lot of things and it has caused most of health problems so this year there will be just one resolution on the list.

1. I will lose 52 pounds in 2011.

Not a resolution but I will collect bet from waffles when he does not net $10k in poker winnings.

Adding for Scott (but as an anti-homage to F-Train):

Back Home

The New Year's crowd started arriving in Lake Tahoe Tuesday. Average age in town dropped. Price to play in casino rose. It also started to snow, trip up in dry conditions 5 hours. Trip back with chain controls was 8 hours.

Temp in Tahoe when we were there was probably low 30s during day so returning to 43 degree Santa Clara does feel brutal, but lows in single digits next few days tell me we ran real well with weather.

Demon child had her ski lesson on the sunniest day which also saw 8 inches of fresh powder fall the night before. She got her confidence back with no falls (2 falls previous trip caused her to quit skiing after single run). She was excited and chatty about her lesson after and at dinner, wife enjoyed her day on the trails on snow shoes. They were both exhausted and turned in early.

I played a little call and chase poker in Harvey's poker room, I have no idea what kind of bet it must take to get take down a pot pre-flop as I saw people calling off stacks with 33-77 and QJs, I did not get many hands but did manage to be 5th caller to UTG raiser holding 99, 954 flop with 2 hearts got a lot of actionand took down a pot with top set against 2 flush chasers and 1 oesd when river 4 of hearts gave me boat to crush the two non-nut flushes.

I went up to room only to discover that wife a daughter were sleeping loudly, after hour of effort to sleep I gave up and got dressed and found craps table. It was amusing table as there were 3 young guys at my end of table who all rolled well but shared same quirk. None of them would take pass line odds when point was 4 or 10, Jason who was to my immediate left would also not bet odds on 5 or 9, he would bet full odds on 6 or 8. During roll where Ryan hit fire bet I asked dealer if I could place an odds bet for dealers behind Jason's pass bet 3rd time Ryan rolled for a 5. The other two youngsters were amused, dealers were more than happy but Jason thought that was too emasculating and finally placed odds bet (won 2 rolls later). Soon after my wife tracked me down, demon had told her "don't worry about daddy he is night owl". Since I had lot of green chips in front of me and it was obviously a fun table wife stuck around for a cup of hot tea, listened to Jason complain that I strong armed into betting more than he wanted and finally failed to cooler a craps table immediately. When dice came to me next I did pass and insist she wanted to pass as well and we let 3 young guys roll and wife and I headed back to room.

Last night in Tahoe I was forced to drop wife to 2nd worst shooter in rankings. A short asian woman standing 2 spots from stick managed to hit boxman with dice on 1st roll, had 3 rolls off table end and then managed to make boxman dodge another dice. Pit Boss had seen enough and issued warning "next roll on table or dice pass", she managed to roll craps or elven a few times making her dad some money on his horn bets before finally establishing point then out.

I set up X-Box and Kinect upon return and watched demon spend 30 minutes customizing her avatar to get it just right, it seemed so star trek next generation to wave hand to control things.
