Per Josie request

Year is almost half over, last few weeks have seen some downward movement after 2 month lull. This puts me at just short of halfway to goal just short of halfway through year but I figure I am not burning 30 calories/hour walking and unknown less in other activities since I am carrying less weight.

What Would you Do?

After reading waffle's post on the subject as well as Rigg's I decided to post my own WWYD.

As a disclaimer I must point out that unlike these people I am not old enough to be eligible.

Company you work for has announced they are going to reduce $1 billion in expenses, you work in a group with a significant number of contractors that is still in key segment of companies business.

Those who are 50+ and with years at company added reach 60 are eligible to opt for early retirement which means getting X years pay plus Y years medical plus other incentives. (I don't feel it is right to post exact details put did find details here.)

You also get information that in the event you are laid off you will receive X/3 years pay and Y/4 years medical.

Math would indicate from numbers that intent is to reduce work force 5-10%.

1) Do you immediately look for another job?
2) Do you automatically take the retire offer even in absence of finding new job?
3) What odds would you need that you can find a new job within time period X to have sufficient pot odds?

Vegas Bound

Youngest cousin (I have met) is getting married this summer. Bachelor Party is this weekend with base being Mandalay Bay.

I may play PLO Monday and if not Tuesday.

I am also comped into a Blackjack tournament so will have to play that. It is 1st so obviously it is play Blackjack but rest of strategy will be new. What I learned at my only craps tournament was my being 2nd shooter and rolling well did nothing for me as other people made more money than I. But what I learned playing craps with Recess was to use position to make sure I was collecting slightly more when table was good.

One thing for sure is I need a break from work. Was so psyched that boss started 3 week vacation Monday but fucker keeps emailing questions. I will not be checking email when I vacation.

Still No Poker

Today marks 6 weeks without poker.

I do miss going to the Morgan Hill Tournament but the hosts schedule worked out that April tourney was his last until August and it is always 1st weekend of month. I am not sure I miss Online anymore. I might have felt compelled to play to maintain IronMan status as that was worth a bonus few bucks every month.

I only have one more month where I can drive solo in the HOV lanes. We own two hybrids bud sadly I misplaced stickers for wive's car when we got them. Will probably find when I get around to clearing out storage. There are no HOV lanes along my short commute route to work so will only miss stickers the few nights I head North after work to visit old co-workers.

I looked at a Tesla Roadster as I think the all electric vehicle stickers are still active but determined I can't sit in Roadster with roof on.

From workplace last quarterly report:
"We plan to also undertake certain cost control initiatives, such as a voluntary early retirement program, further workforce reductions and other restructuring activities. We expect to recognize a pretax charge in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011 of between $0.5 billion and $1.1 billion in connection with the voluntary early retirement program, which amounts will be paid in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011. At this time we cannot quantify the amount of further restructuring charges that we expect to recognize in future periods, as we are in the process of evaluating these activities."

I believe I have reasonable odds to not be part of "further workplace reductions" but it definitely makes work more tense plus sense I have played as much poker as I have I recognize that the risk is never zero.

No Poker, Only work

The 15 days without poker left me with more time to sleep and sadly less urgency to leave work in time to register for the 7:20 (Pacific) Rush Super Turbo KO.

Eventually I will find another hobby and/or exercise more but last two weeks work has been busy as I am covering for co-worker who went to Mother-in-laws funeral (in Iran) so have departed closer to 9 each night.

The most important thing learned at work is that it may seem cool to name a project after a Marvel Comics theme but once you involve Canada trouble occurs.

There have been some holdups shipping from China to US and from US to Bangalore just because we put Project name on manifest.

Someone has some explaining to do to convince people that they really are just router boards rather than some mysterious Weapon X.

More bored than pissed

It's Saturday Night.

Wife is already asleep, daughter has headphones on.

Shark's game is over.

Turbo Fiddy is underway and I can't play.

Bay 101 does not deal PLO.

Bay 101 here I come

Was already having a bad day at work, had to go tell boss about a mistake on his project. I did not make the mistake that hoses schedule quite a bit but dude who made error is on Leave of Absence so I get to clean it up.

Email lit up with the DOJ news about end of online.

On positive I had mostly cashed out to go to Las Vegas last week.

On the bad side I have been on a heater since Tuesday.

I also took 2nd in an On-Demand Rush tourney for $399 and had double cash in 10:20 super turbo KO.

Only positive I can take from end of hobby is Waffles won't get to $10k so bet is mine biatch.

Vegas Weekend Report

Tried to text Falstaff based on 2007 WPBT spread sheet. Got "dude you got wrong number" text.

Drank no beer to limit my carbohydrate intake. Jack and Diet Coke hits harder though.

Jack by the shot hits even harder (Recess idea, the shots at least).

Craps was burning money until MITCHELL starting hitting tens like it owed him money, rough estimate is 10 total including 4 in a row at end at Planet Hollywood.

Recess and I headed to IP to meet up with Don and others for dinner (hope Saturday was correct day), we settled in on a craps table with a few good shooters who were overly inked but don't think much were prison tattoos to wait. We had another good run at table. We switched to tequila after discovering my diamond status with Caesars allows Patron upgrade. But we may have neglected to tell Don et al to look for us at a craps table.

We gave up at 8:30 and headed to dinner needing to soak up some alcohol.

Recess Birthday Weekend

Need a break from work before my new board comes in next week.

Wife and Demon are headed to SoCal to meet up with sister-in-law and 2 nieces.

Seems like a perfect weekend for Las Vegas.

Now if I could only figure out how to run like Jo C for the weekend and cardrack my way to a huge weekend

Donkey Island Tipping Point

I will miss the Mookie to attend Sharks v Flames. So wanted to play but one of managers surrendered his seat in the Suite so I must experience Hockey like the fat cats.

Everyone who watches Survivor regularly knows that the safest person tonight is Muchtim.
The sole remaining member of a team always gets to decide which pair to swing the power to of the 4 man team. It is strategy played out every season since the 1st when Susan and Kelly went to a 2-2 tie with Rudy and Richard.

The lesson is figure out who your best bud is and throw your other two team members out as other goes next challenge and then it is you, best bud and much fighting for that last immunity and choosing heads up opponent.

Clearly if you are looking at vote to win Josie gets thrown under the bus. But if it comes down to playing Heads Up poker for the win you toss SmBoatDrinks.

More Restful Sleep Ahead

I got home tilted from work but now I am very relaxed.

I think a little money should go to Japan and a little should go to craps.

Decided to follow the George Costanza model and leave on a high note.

I sleep a lot better after win normally.

My Valentine's gift to wife was to do something about my snoring. Washington's Birthday weekend I was in a 'sleep study'. A fascinating process where 4 sensors were strapped to my legs, 3 to my chest, 6 more table to my face and 8 GLUED to my head. Nurse took ~45 minutes to get me all hooked up and used a heat gun to help the glue dry. Had a big rainbow ponytail of wires coming off the head.

My performance on test was spectacular as 2 hours into test they slapped mask like the one pictured on. I got my new CPAP last Thursday and my wife and daughter are sleeping a lot better.

Survivor

Apparently Goat needed immunity as they turned on the creator last night.

Gpjacobs, Maloney and I had 35-40 BBs when we agreed to chop.$1 rebuy is brutal just for how deep everyone is late and am not really sure why a 26 peep private tourney pays 3 when an 18 SNG pays 4. Kat was unfortunate victim and it felt like she was in for the most buyins.

My key hands of night were picking up AA in BB and having Mr How to fold KK not fold 99 and then winning flip at final table against Kat.

March 1 Weight

Warning there is a picture of feet again!

But not until bottom.

Goal for the year of 52 pounds still seems achievable but have finally figured out what "on pace" would mean.

A calorie deficit of 134750 works out to 449/day.

I found a chart that helps me examine impact of weight loss on calorie burn:

Activity (1-hour duration)Weight of person and calories burned
160 pounds (73 kilograms)200 pounds (91 kilograms)240 pounds (109 kilograms)
Walking, 3.5 mph 277 346 414

Thank god the chart seems linear so I will assume currently at 260 pounds I will burn 448 calories/hour and at 220 pounds I will 380 calories/hour. But for analysis purposes 410/hour should work as it would be burn over average weight if I reach goal.

Over the last 2 months (other than 2 weeks with calf injury) I walked 12 miles week to achieve calorie deficit of 5250/week so the walking portion of my week will drop from 1627 to 1435. Rest of activity should also consume 8% fewer calories at average weight which would still only be a shade over 400 calories/week hit on deficit.

I am comfortably on pace but long way to go.

Chess

Bayne Waffles
1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 d6
Hate playing against Philidor so choose a rarely used line hoping to transpose.
3. c3
Waffles makes strange choice to move pawn twice in an opening
d5
4. exd5 Qxd5
Now we are into some strange Scandinavian like variant where I can't harass Queen.
5. d4 Nc6
6. dxe5 if you are going to give me pawn it would be rude to decline
6 ..... Qxd1
7. Kxd1 b6
one of waffles other games opponent is crushing him after fianchetto of bishop
8. Bg5 mainly want to bring out Knight without blocking bishop, Bf4 probably better
8 .... f6
9. exf6 trading off overextended pawn to get 2 isolated pawns on waffles kingside
9... gxf6
10. Bf4 diagram

Ne5 - terrible move, just surrenders material
11. Nxe5 fxe5
12. Bxe5 Bg4+
13. Ke1 - terrible move Kc2 so if Bf5 Bd3
Rd8 - terrible move o-o-o clears K from e8 allowing for bishop pin
14. Bb5+ - f3 then take the rook on h8
Kf7
15. Bc4+ - f3 followed by taking Rook on h8 or at least winning Bishop on g5
Kg6
16. f3 Nf6
17. Kf2 Bc5+
18. Kg3 h5
19. Bxf6 Kxf6
20. fxg4 hxg4

21. Rf1+ - WTF
take the stupid pawn on g4 and just grind out connected passed pawn
Kg5
22. h4+ Rxh4
23. Na3 Rd2
24. Rf5+ Kxf5
25. Kxh4 Rxg2

26. Rf1+ Bf2+ my punishment for not taking pawn
27. Rxf2+ Rxf2
28. Kg3 Rxb2
29. Nb5 a6
30. Nxc7 Kg5
31. Bb3 a5
32. c4 Rb1
33. Nd5 Rf1
34. Nxb6 Rf3+
35. Kg2 Kf4

I think because UI can win with knight + Bishop I can grind out win if I find a way to force rook for pawn exchange
36. Nd5+ Ke4
37. Ne7 g3
38. c5 Rf2+
39. Kxg3 Ke3 1-0

Kudos to Goat

I made an effort to get home in time to play the Mookie last night. 42 runners last night is a huge step to revitalizing blogger poker and the Survivor Poker has led to some awesome rants, some delusional smack talk, and a lot of chat and prop bets.

Also congrats to JamyHawk for being last Survivor (to quote Josie "Team Donkey may be stacked, but that's not because of YOU JamyHawk" for that I have to add you to blogroll.

Daytona

Growing up in south I should be a bigger fan of Nascar, but I outgrew my need to drive fast when I spun my Ford Escort on I-95 when a retread wrapped around one of my front tires.

Only race I've watched in last 20 years prior to yesterday was the last few laps of Dale Earnhardt's career 10 years ago. There was just nothing spectacular about the crash to indicate that he had died when it happened until you realize the idea of the car body flying all over the place is to absorb the momentum and peel away for the drivers safety.

Watching Trevor Bayne win made for a funny day watching the sports crawler during day whenever they announced Daytona results.

Weekend can't get here fast enough

I got a new task at work, have to be ready March 14 to begin testing. I am one of two HW engineers that will be heavily involved. Other dude has a pregnant wife with a March 13th due date.

Facebook really has changed the world, 1st Egypt then I learned of an Uncle's death yesterday from a cousin's Facebook status message. I tried to call mom immediately after but got no answer. She sent me an email 6 hours later letting me know of Scotty's passing. Death was unexpected but it shouldn't have been, he had a stroke a few years ago and was still drinking hard. I think the two tours in Vietnam haunted him until the end.
