Weekend Sports Wrap Up
If gambling on sports were legal in California I would have to wager on Colorado to advance to face the Phillies. Peavy vs. Fogg is advantage Peavy on paper but Peavy has not pitched at Coors this year, Rockies have momentum and old baseball saying is momentum is only as good s today's starting pitcher.
In Fantasy Football this weekend in my longest tenured league Vince Young was on a bye so I had to start Daunte Culpepper. By my read on Bill Simmon's Vengeance Scale his 3rd rushing TD as time ran out and pointing out knee was okay would rate an 6.3. Lead is approx 40, he has Maroney, I have Housh and Moss.
League 2 I trail by 12 opponent had McNabb and sack don't rate as negative, but I have Kenny Watson or Rudi and Maroney going.
League 3 is against Waffles, must crush him! I have 19 point lead and Gostowski, he has Housh.
League 4 is work league, I am playing worst team in league and trail by 16 but have Carson Palmer and Wes Welker going tonight while opponent is done
In FantasySportsLive I took a 2nd, Akers at Kicker, Harrison at WR were worse than expected. I struggled with whether to take Jets against Buffalo or Texans against Falcons, I chose poorly.
My favorite pro Football team is the Tampa Bay Bucs, their 3-1 start and signs of offense confuse me, did not see this coming.
Georgia Tech dominated in a game that only a Tech fan could have enjoyed watching. The announcers were almost ready to name Tech's punter the player of game but Tashard Choice ran just enough that they had an alternative. I believe I have seen a punter named player of game for a losing team.
Donovan McNabb was sacked again.

Bubbling Satellites
Super SatelliteBuy-In: $25.00/$2.50
45 players
Total Prize Pool: $3850.00
Target Tournament #70000022 Buy-In: $1050.00
3 tickets to the target tournament
Tournament started - 2007/09/27 - 22:18:00 (ET)
Dear bayne_s,
You finished the tournament in 4th place.A $125.00 award has been credited to your Real Money account.Congratulations!
Thank you for participating.
I did not recieve an email for the $33 Rebuy WCOOP satellite where 3 seats were awarded. 4th got $320 and 5th got $290 and I finished 6th soon after I had raised from CO with JJ and been jammed by shorty with ATo and one of the 14 Aces in deck hit the flop to make me bubble boy.
I did also play a little PLO on FullTilt and for the 1st time in what seems like weeks got all in on flop with higher set in set over set confrontation and held on to win. After flopping set of Ts against set of 8s I won with Q hi straight flush against his K hi straight so it is never easy for me anymore on Full Tilt.
Happy Birthday AlCan'thang !

The Satellite Machine
$0.00 $0.00 $0.00 $3,333.00 $3,333.00
The above are my stats for the last 11 days on PokerStars. $273 of the $3333 are cash for just missing the seat and $110 are $T which are ~15% more valuable in marketplace than $W and in my mind are equivalent to cash since I play tournaments. I was out of pocket $113.60 before starting to play the sats exclusively with $W.
I have used $W to enter the Limit O8 WCOOP and Sunday's "2nd Chance" NL HE so my 0/2 cash rate is bad but not wafflesque.
I have also had 3 frustrating near misses to another 2k in $W when I got all in preflop with AAQJ against AQQJ and lost when Q hit flop, lost with QQJ5 against QJ64 all in pre when 6 and 4 flopped and lost a LHE hand with KK against KQ, we are all in on turn and river J completes gutshot.
Part of me feels like I should just keep attacking the satellites the rest of the week because being on the west coast with a job is not conducive to WCOOP play during week but the remaining weekend events have massive buyins. At this point if I build up the $W to enough to play Main Event I feel I would have to play rather than take the 20% conversion hit to get dollars. By no standard of bankroll management other than Ted Forrest should I be playing a $2500 buyin tourney. Alternative is to again target 2nd chance events. Will just have to wait to see where $W lead me.
A bonus of WCOOP satellite play is I should make "GoldStar" VIP this month. Is this better than being Gold in Full Tilt's IronMan challenge?

To Quote Alan "Building a new legend on Pokerstars"
Fantasy Football Sucks
In 2nd league I will lose by 2 points because I started Tatum Bell instead of Brian Westbrook.
In 3rd league I started Chris Brown instead of Ronnie Brown.
In 4th league as long as Drew Brees does not go nuts I will win.
My participation in MATH tonight depends on PokerEnthusiast, he is in town and we will probably commiserate about busting out of WCOOP events while Final Tabling same event on FullTilt the same day. He in Razz me in O8.
I will need someone else to bust Hoy, Nemesis and RaisingCayne to maintain my MATH moneyboard leadership.
Did receive this email this weekend:

Can't really take a lot of credit for busting Chip he was at ~4 BB due to a brutal suckout followed by a quartering at others hands when I minraised UTG with AA34 (1 suit) he jammed an A34Q which allowed me to reaise rest of table out and no low came.

Rebuy Fun
Saturday I made 3 attempts to play the $25+2 DoubleShootout Sats to WCOOP #14 when I accidentally stumbled across these $8.80 + R 2x-turbos. I suspect next saturday there will be something similar to WCOOP Main Event. 1 hour of rebuys with 5 minute blind levels made it important to play like Kat's Donkarama as the 4k chips adouble rebuy bought were trouble when last rebuy level was 800/1600 with 160 ante. Managed to win an entry in 2nd Sat I tried for a total outlay of ~$75. Decided since I am not Chad and my comments on Hoy's blog this week proved I am better off playing with big window on game which led me to unregister and take $W as Aussie Millions freeroll starts at same time as WCOOP 14 and FullTilt's $750k guarantee is starting hour and half later.
Will use $W to enter more WCOOP sats. So far one real $50 booby prize has been collected where I lost with KT to KT after we both flopped top 2 pair. Since sites for trading $T/$W seem to charge a 20% premium I will have to pass on that. If anyone wants to play WCOOP events or sats and is willing to buy at 5% discount let me know (cashmanbrian offers 3% discount on buys)
Georgia Tech continued it's streak of failing to win in Charlottesville since I got married. I have not figured out what led to this trend but wife has said there is no divorce only death (and she means me) so I can't help them.

Time to introduce a new System
I have decided the time has come to adapt a harmless aspect of Bush Administration into my poker play:
A Tilt Advisory System
Low = Green;
Guarded = Blue;
Elevated = Yellow;
High = Orange;
Severe = Red.
Logged on to Full Tilt early enough to play the RiverChaser's, Will not identify player who was a little raise happy buy he definitely moved my Tilt status to Elevated.
Managed to go out pretty early on hand where Emptyman limped UTG Astin raised from an EP and despite alarms going off in my head that UTG had AA I minraised Astin preflop with my TT. Managed to self cripple forcing AA all in and Hoy put me out of my misery with KQ vs. my AT with a river K.
I exited early enough that I entered the $28k, and at 2230 saw 64 people entered in $750k Guarantee Sat. MiamiDon had pointed out that these had an overlay every day this week. A jackAce was kind enough to double up my AK 1st hand and getting seat for Sunday was relatively easy. Cashed in $28k at 91st reducing tilt level.
Thirsday Night was a big night in the Bayne household. Premiere of Survivor China was the big event. The daughter can probably answer any trivia question about any previous season of Survivor. Right now she is in study phase to select her favorite to root for. I was born in year of Tiger, wife was born Year of the Dragon. Daughter is Mommy's girl so she is rooting for the Dragon Team. I am naturally relegated to rooting for Tiger. It's her rule I must oppose.
This hand at cash reduced Tilt Level to Green:

Don't Bluff Calling Stations
Made mistake of bluffing at a donkey in the Mookie whose AK though unpaired was still good at river. Later went out when I semi-bluffed T6s into KQ9 flop that I also had flush draw and same donkey called with JJ. Note to self: Next time you bluff in a blogger tournament don't tell player you are bluffing you will be jamming Hoy and RaisingCayne every chance you get before tourney starts.
2315 $3k guarantee was Limit O8, followed up Monday's "cash" with a Final Table. 9 handed at Final table average stack was 51k when we were at 5k/10k level. Hard to claim skill is a real factor when best starting hand might be 60/40 fav over what BB is forced to play. It really becomes pick a hand pre-flop and pray. Got money in good on turn got rivered (5 outs for scoop) went out 5th. I am sure I'll play it Friday too.

Random Chat from WCOOP # 8
Another player at table put this in chat:
LorraineLove: "i'm starting to get the feeling there's been some ground-breaking theoretical developments in LO8 since the last time i played"
Today's Dilemma
I arrived home at 5:40 last night so again failed to play the Bodog Blogger tournament. One of these days I will get it together and get Bodog (with my account number) on my work computer so I can register and not be vulnerable to the selfish assholes that gridlock the Moffet Park Blvd. and Matilda Intersection.
Played 3 tournaments on Pokerstars instead.
$11 NLHE went out relatively early. UTG raised to 4x BB, since he had already raised 3 hands this orbit and seemed to be raising 1/3 of time he had 3 callers before it got to me in the SB. I held 99 figured I was ahead of half his range so shoved. UTG proudly re-raised all in with 33 everyone else ran away and riverstars rewarded him with a river 3.
$33 O8 SNG, 4 left 3 pay, I am 2nd in chips. I raise with A2JJ and suited Ace. Flop comes 34J. I bet pot am raised by the chip leader, I naturally shove and he calls with 449Q. Running hearts give him a flush and the bubble is mine.
I then played the $58 Satellite into WCOOP #8, $530 Limit Omaha 8. I was a little slow on the print screen and failed to capture my fold of AA24 ds due to a timeout. My intent was to fold. I don't think I have ever folded such a strong hand pre-flop but play was completely correct.
My dilemma is that I thought I would unregister and use $T elsewhere. Instead I have $W.
Is there a market for trading $W? What is the normal exchange rate?
I examined the WCOOP event schedule and could play PL Hold'em this weekend but it does seem wrong to use my $W in a format I have played maybe once versus alternative of pulling an LJ ("work" from home) and playing in what I have to feel is my strongest game.
Having read we-are-not-fish I realize it would be a gross bankroll managment foul to play in WCOOP #8 but FTOPS #8 was also a bankroll managment violation, playing in sat was a violation. Does O8 always get Event 8?
Edit: MiamiDon was very helpful in providing links to examine selling $W (best offer $463 for $530). Boss hated the idea of me playing tournament from office that could consume whole afternoon. He told me to go home and play tournament and put in vacation day request if I didn't make it back. Alan, funny difference with Stars vs. FullTilt is presence of $ during tournaments on chip counts.

High Stakes Poker
On last nights episode the amateur (referred to as Quiet Mike) raised pre-flop with a 23. I believe Phil Helmuth called raise with 44 to set mine the flop. The flop was 4 5 K and I believe betting action was then check by Phil bet by Mike, Phil raised to $30k (leaving $30k-$60k behind) and Mike shoved and Phil did one of his patented quick calls. Final Pot was ~$202k.
At this point Mike offered to run it twice. Phil declined but offered Eli Elezra the chance to "insure the hand" for $30k at 2.6:1. I felt fascinated by this on so many levels.
Running hand twice as 3:1 favorite means ~56% of time Phil wins both times, ~5% of time Phil loses twice and 39% of time they chop.
Insurance means Phil nets $170k 76% of time and nets $78k 24% of time.
If I am Eli Elezra and my bankroll is deep enough I insure Phil every time, he has just been presented a game of chance with a 13% house edge.
If I am Mike I am pissed because if Phil does not want to run it twice then I would actually prefer to offer him insurance as now instead of making $202k 25% of time I make $30k back and can make an additional $94k 25% of time.
I can now understand why the other pros are so giddy when they see Phil sit down at the cash table. He makes great reads and plays well but he has aspect of his game where the variance scares him and he is willing to give up +EV at payoff odds in line with house edge on casino bonus bets.
This would Tilt Me

Questions from the Weekend
Watched the Georgia Tech Boston College game Saturday Night and thought Patriots must be sharing their defensive signal stealing technology with BC. Their QB and line seemed to always pick up the blitzes and know the coverages. Georgia Tech did seem to have far superior punting game.
Finally registered for Hoy 's pick'em contest and immediately tagged the Bengals with the 16 confidence rating. How do the Browns score 51?
I also managed to face a fantasy football team that started Andre and Chad Johnson against me. Result pending but I am not optimistic.
On the poker front I played in the $5 rebuy satellites to Pokerstars 1830 $50k guarantee twice this weekend (with 2 seats cashed for $T) amazing thing to me was each night one player played it just like the donkarama. 1st night 1 player took 15 minutes to be in for 6 buy ins. Sunday a player was all in the 1st 3 hands and out 6 buy ins had a single buy in left and went out 2 hands later after dropping $30 in a sat for a $55 buy in tourney.
Has anyone else noticed that FullTilt RNG tends to reward those who go all in 1st without regard to what pot odds would be with a true deck of cards?
Does FullTilt's RNG have nothing better to do than kick me in the balls to boot me out of a tourney?
Warning rest of post may contain bad beat stories!

Soon after this in Mookie went to felt with TT on an 8 high flop and discovered that NumbBono had QQ in SB to get knocked down to 100. A few hands later jamyhawk defended the 40 already in BB calling off another 60 with a 43 which of course defeated my KQ.
Was eliminated from the $3k O8 when I flopped 2 pair but 2nd shortest player at table called off all his chips to a 3rd bet on flop with an under pocket pair and 3rd low draw only to turn a set.
Got the rude surprise when the Dookie started of seeing 3000 chips and Drizz at my starting table. Fortunately I turned a full house early heads up with Drizz and the river counterfeited Drizz' nut low and gave me 3/4 of pot.
I eliminated jeciimd the 3rd time I got him all in on the river where I had strong high on a board with no low when a low failed to come on river.
InstantTragedy showed a lot of aggression with the big stack but managed to pick good spots to take chips from him. The bubble was long and grueling until our host Mookie finally seized the bubble. Heads up with Hoy I originally executed a plan of playing small ball with Hoy and exploit my time zone advantage. I decided this was too Patriot-like to continue and switched to a plan where I got my money in bad and sucked out, maybe Hoy is the one player on FullTilt running worse than me.

September 11
I went to Georgia Tech on a Naval ROTC scholarship. A perk of this was I also got to go on a summer cruise to Europe. I was on the USS Thorn a Spruance class destroyer that one would not confuse with even a Carnival cruise ship. My assigned space in ship was the middle bunk in a room with ~50 shipmates and the locler underneath the bunk. I did get to spend time in Siganella Sicily and Rota, Spain and Charleston South Carolina but 26 of my 30 days were spent at sea. The crew of the Thorn had been on deployment for 18 months and the Boatswain's mates had been standing every 3rd watch prior to Midshipmens arrival so the Captain decided to integrate the Middie's into the "Deck" crew and allow them to stand every 4th watch instead.
When not spending time painting, cleaning or picking up I was on deck watch where I either got the helm, one of the 3 lookout stations or to have the headset to CIC.
On Sept 11, 2000 my watch came up as the "mid watch" so for 2nd hour I was on the Helicopter pad with binoculars trying to spot other ships. This task was made a little more difficult than usual because we were passing through a Hurricane somewhere in North Atlantic. Being an arrogant lad I opted not to wear the safety harnass and just sat on the deck scanning the sea behind. Ship was doing 20 degree rolls as it sailed and I had pretty well adjusted to the implications of this as I walked through the ship and sitting on deck should have been no problem. The ship suddenly did a 40 degree roll and I went tumbling to one side of ship. I managed to grab the track for the hangar door and caught enough of a grip that I slammed into hangar door. At this moment something big slid by, I scrambled inside the Hangar as fast as I could because I did not want that thing sliding back at me. I notified the Airmen on duty that something big had gone by and he grabbed a flashlight and scanned deck and determined that a 1700 pound reel of cable had gone over the side. I also reported in to Augie (Not sure what is real name was but he was indeed called Augie) what had happened as all he had heard over headset was burst of panic some silence then me catching my breath. When my relief came for aft lookout duty we could not find the harnass.
Next morning when I was aft lookout again I saw grooves in deck 18 inches from Hangar door and scratches on the + anchor point in deck where harnass had been secured. As aft lookout I am the one who is suppsed to report "man overboard" but hypothermia sets in at 5 minutes and no way do they spot me in a Hurricane.
Been running bad at the tables lately but the last 26 years have been on 'borrowed time".
Went out of MATH in 5th, recess rampage jammed his mighty 77 into the JJ I was holding in BB. FullTilt's RNG still hates me so rewarded him with a 7 on flop. Congrats on lucksacking the bubble away from me Alan.
I ran goot after MATH too:

I am Ready for some Football
Despite losing the best player in college football and a 4 year starter at QB I am optimistic about Georgia Tech's prospects this morning.
1st test of season comes Saturday when Georgia Tech hosts Boston College. I like what I have seen from the line play the 1st two games, Choice is a fine starting Running Back but the young 3rd string back is the one carrying the ball in the clip. When you schedule the Div-1AA teams you are supposed to roll them. When you play Notre Dame this year you are supposed to roll them.
The QB play is a concern, thus far (according to Atlanta based observer Scott) "Bennett has looked as inaccurate as Reggie Ball". Boston College has not given up a lot of yardage on the ground so some passing will be required to keep defense honest.
Also gave some thought to the "Reggie Ball era" at Georgia Tech. Part of me always feels he was the worst 4 year starter in Division 1A history. I am sure part of reason for disappointment with his play was his freshman year's play was reminiscent of Joe Hamilton's freshman year. Hamilton improved every year while Reggie got worse each year. Makes me wonder what could have been if O'Leary had fled to his cameo gig at Notre Dame and Reggie had Ralph Friedgen's tutleage.
In my fantasy football matchups I have 3 close games and one where I am getting smacked. If Carson Palmer has huge game and targets Housh more than Chad I can pull off 4-0 week but 3-1 seems more likely. I did draft Peterson and Calvin Johnson for team that's getting smacked. Have Kitna on the bench so I have decent trade prospects for improvement.
Thanks for link to video Scott

Do I blog too infrequently?
I pressed the "publish post" but don't see the post. Where did it go?
I suffered the "most public of my many humiliations" when I lost a HU match to LJ for the 1st time. She was so giddy from her success she even sat down at same cash table with me.

Do I gamble too Much?
I am working at my 4th start-up.
At 1st one there were layoffs on two separate occaisions.
2nd start-up had a nice payoff, no layoffs, but was a sweatshop.
3rd start-up had 3 layoffs plus we had meetings on 2 other occaisons where it was announced that they were not sure they could pay us after tomorrow plus the final shutdown meeting where I got laid off but also got 2 months severance pay because they kept the East Coast optical product alive.
Answer would have to be yes, even if I didn't gamble outside of employment.
2. Has gambling ever made your home life unhappy?
There was one additional time when 3rd company was arranging a funding round that the workers suspected a "no pay" meeting was coming. Dan and I took our wives to Las Vegas anyway. We booked flights, rooms and show tickets long before we suspected lack of pay was coming. Dan and the wives were near piano bar of New York New York while I was cashing some chips. The wife overheard Dan on cell phone asking a co-worker "if tomorrow was the last paycheck?". Home life was certainly not happy after wife learned we were in Las Vegas with this hanging over us. CEO had told me before we left that he was confident funding would happen, I believed him and it happened. Wife was pissed for ~7 hours. The but I'm up defense did not carry much weight at 7:00 pm when I was up $200, at 2:00 am with me drunk as shit and up $2000 more from -EV games wife was annoyed but anger had lost it's edge.
I am asolid 2 for 2 in the Gambler's Anonymous questionaire

Phoenix
My bankroll challenge is to take this $500 reload + 2 tokens + my rakeback mid month and restore bankroll to $7400 level I was at 10 days ago. Timeframe for challenge is to accomplish and or maintain by Winter WPBT gathering.
Things going well:
1) Dad has completed chemo for prostate cancer. We won't know for sure until PSA test in few months how well it is cleared up. According to Mom he looks pregnant. He told the daughter that "his boobie's were the same size". Look on the daughter's face was priceless.
2) I am not a University of Michigan or Notre Dame fan.
3) I entered pokerstars $100k guarantee (won in 70 FPP SNG), 16768 entrants. Means I have to be awake by noon but how long must this thing take?
4) Was 1 for 2 in super turbo SNG so I am in $750k for $50, need to bust a pro or cash or overall -EV
Things going poorly:
1) I have a cousin going to jail. He has drug problem and is not a criminal mastermind. He altered the routing number and account number on a check for $100. Apparently if he wrote check for $1 less it would have just been a misdemeanor, if he had not used a check with his real name and home address on it he might not have been caught so easily.
2) My wife has a huge bruise on her foot and probably 2 broken toes. She was exercising using a yoga ball and managed to kick a chair hard when ball shifted. Bad side of me being an engineer is 1st instinct in any situation is to point out how to add safety margin or efficiency to any situation.
3) In a fantasy football league where we must start 2 QBs each week I have Trent Green, Jake Delhomme and JP Losman on my roster.
4) $17.5k Guarantee AA < KK all in pre-flop IGHN. (only mentioned because I was creating blog entry during $17.5k)
Will miss MATH tomorrow due to live Fantasy Football draft. Good luck to all that are playing MATH.
