BBT 3 Strategy Guide

Step 1. Do not go broke. BBT 1, I grabbed the lead at some point in May, I was also losing money for the series when I took the lead. The $1k+ in buyins could have been easily had if only Full Tilt's Tournament Dollars were introduced before FTOPS Event #3 or FTOPS # 10. WTF was I doing playing $535 HORSE or $1060 6-Max NLHE. I have been +EV in the $55 sats into the Sunday Guarantee and may not have cashed in Sunday Guarantee for a year. Clearly move here is to accumulate the $T for BBT 3.

Step 2. Win once to get into TOC. Odds of me playing in ME are low, odds of me playing in Preliminary Event are high. The last time I won a Main Event Seat the wife and I scrutinized the terms and conditions for a couple of hours before we agreed there was no way to extract the cash. I might be able to get the time off work for ME, but haven't been at job 2 years yet and have already taken 3 weeks off for poker tournaments.

Step 3. To quote MiamiDon: "I've decided that I will in no way, shape, or form, kill myself to play all the events. Good luck to those of you who do and good luck to those already with shaky marriages and relationships since this might be the end for you."

My wife and I have had a good run, my daughter doesn't like me anyway. I will have to try to keep marriage together just to give me a chance to win $10 from Waffles. Logically I should not play every event, realistically I played every event of BBT 1 and would be surprised if I missed any in BBT 2. I suck at the stud variants so I should not play them, but probably will.

Step 4. I am going to have to play better, I got to 3rd in Riverchasers but was ridiculously short when we got to 3 handed. I was top 10 chip stack quickly but lost a few chips when Chad floated me. Fucker got me to lay down 99 on a jack high flop, maybe if in pot with Chad it will be WWSD mindset as Swimmom seems to own Chad.

New FTP features

a) There is now a 12 hour self-exclusion option. AKA the "I'm totally drunk" option.

Now if PokerTracker can create a "You are tilted" feature and link in automatically to the 12 hour self exclusion I could complete avoid bankroll meltdowns!

Other features here.

Sadly my suited Ace is the wrong one. I could have raised pre in position but then I am committing ~1/4 of my stack, likely to get multiple callers and in PLO AA is just a pair but if you can get HU and get most or all of stack in pre hand plays self.

I also played my 5th $26 90 player KO SNG of past two days.

Results are 7th (9 pay)

17th when as 10th stack I shove AK and get called by AQ losing on river.

13th when as 9th stack I shove KK from button into CO raiser who was stealing with 96o, 6 on flop 9 on river

14th when as 11th stack and 800/1600 blinds I jam for 11k with AA, SB calls with K9o leaving 163 behind, 9 on flop K on river

13th tonight, 20 left I am 8th shorty shoves A6, medium stack shoves AQ, in SB I call with KK and lose 2/3 of stack. next orbit I jam 44, get called by A4o leaving 400 behind.

Surf Again?

Cameoed the the Mookie when MrsCrackn limped QQ into my JJ. Cruelly I even hit a Jack on flop only to lose on 4 flush. Congrats to surf for winning again.

Cameoed the Dookie when fishy sucked out with a dominated hand all in pre, then BoxofWhine tried to steal my short BB when I had instacall stack and sucked out with a dominated hand.

I railed Hoy in $28k as he played the weakest poker ever seen on the bubble to go out 231st when 216 paid. Since he was instafolding I can only assume "dfghjk" is on his forehead this morning.

I played a little NLHE cash today since worst poker player claims to be making money playing cash I had to try. It really seems trivial to make money at $100 NL.

Cooler Tuesday

I railed weak_player as he went out 17th in $24k guarantee, his exit was on hand where AKs lost to AKo all in pre-flop. Weak was stunned but if he had read Stupid System he would have realized that he was drawing to a single flush while his opponent was drawing to 2 flushes.

In Bodog Blogger tournament I used up all my flop hitting skils early flopping a flush and turning a flush in 1st 15 minutes as well as raising Chad's blind when I had KK and he had AK. I am sure that the KQ small flop would have gotten more chips from someone less wary but he probably put me on KQ. Chad was quite effusive over my poker skill in chat after the hand. I went out on $T bubble when I lost my 17th consecutive all-in race in a blogger tourney when NewinNov did not fold an easily dominated KQs.

My apologies for not remembering who knocked me out of skillz. A368 proved no match for A26J on 566 flop.

Mookie is Wednesday at 7:00 (Pacific)

Bodog is 3rd tourney in race for top 18 and shot at Main Event.

Play them Both!
Skillz tonight is O8.
Variance is such an ugly thing when running on bad side of it.
Friday night with 40 players left I was sitting 4th.
My BB I pick up JJ, called a jam for 1/3 my chips and am against TT, he hits set on flop
From CO I jam AKs, BB has AQo calls, Q on river.
UTG 30 left I pick up AQs jam, BB has 56o and makes ATC priced in call, 5 on flop Q on turn he 4 flushes me. If I fold AQs I would have made money as hand for hand play note comes up during hand and 4 players exited.
MATH Astin was hitting flops like they owed him money so I tried to jam Astin and Fuel out of a pot pre with AQ. Fuel called with 66 praying for a race and won (nice call fishy). Apparently no one folds a pair or an Ace pre-flop anymore in MTTs.
I played a $24 90 person KO with LJ and lucko last night, I was in decent shape with 20 left but in two orbit lost 4 hands where I had bounty in hand only to have river save opponent. Last two were rivered boats against my turned straights and flushes. LJ went on to take 2nd but had 2 pp lose to small pp with 6 left all in pre.
I had a long girlie chat with weak_player (congrats on 1 year anniversary without a blog update).
He has been datamining the $1/$2 PLO tables and sat down with a bunch of net losers. As he reviewed the data he commented that most of the losses came on cracked AA and that on a lot of occaisons the money was all in preflop.
Getting all in with AA pre is high variance way to play PLO I know this weekend alone I lost with:
AAQJ ds to Al's AA64
AAJT ss to JJT9
AAKK ds to KK63 (63 suited)
AAQQ 1 suit to 8553 (1 suit)

Mad Skillz

Final Hand of skillz game is captured above. I got caught a few times betting air so my raising had lost credibility.
I eliminated waffles to break final table bubble and had the pleasure of conducting the post match interview.

sirfwalgman (2/12/2008 9:14:43 PM): lol
Bayne (2/12/2008 9:14:45 PM): write your rant
I was UTG waffles BB and had been stealing his blind a lot. He had misfortune to defend with A rag against my JJ on an AJx flop to give me enough chips to hurt him.
I think I made it to $T back in Bodog, don't remember much detail about skillz or Bodog due to FTOPS 11.
I busted out of FTOPS 11 when my A26J ds could not catch any of my 16 outs to defeat the 5588 ds on a 7TQ flop with 2 of my suit. 5588 could not be pushed off flush draw and river gave him backdoor flush.
Was an average stack when I pushed a A245 with nutflush draw hard on 36T flop. Turn big that produced a 2nd set caused turn betting to be capped and river big sealed my fate. 20 outs twice for scoop another 3 for split. Somedays Omaha 8 sux. Playing 4 hours for nothing has brought me down.

Can't get enough of FTOPS

The Bodog Blogger series with Main Event package at stake is tonight.

Tonight is 6 Max Limit Hold'em. The suckoutistry should be spectacular.

A massive sinus headache and migraine forced me to flee work early in morning, after an excellent nap and a dose of Coricidin D, I woke up refreshed, checked my email and had weak_player blowing up IM with Feldar sightings. He forced me to fire up FullTilt.

The FullTilt client window showed the massive sat to the $1060 buyin FTOPS 10 about to start and I made impulsive decision to register.
I spewed a few chips to someone who could not fold presto after turn on AKJx board because he had flush draw (that hit).

I won a race with Annette_15 my AK crushes QQ to get above 2k, won a QQ vs. KK that was for 1/2 my stack and made a few steals trying to be more aggro and protective of blinds and found myself sneaking in.
I managed to spew chips on occaisons and accumulate chips quickly when I won two separate coin flips for 1/2 my stack then 1/3 of my stack. Just before 2nd break managed to lose quite a few chips when TT lost to QT on a QQT flop. I busted out 639th when J7 lost to KT on a JYx flop.
March 3-9 is a Bodog Tournament Series saw details on the mute one's site.

Top pair good kicker turned into top trips good kicker from BB in unraised pot but ran into boat. Then after getting from shortstack to 80% of average raised AKo from UTG + 1, flop came K hi with 3 hearts and BB had slowplayed AA and I did not catch up.

I have chosen to list events by my exit time rather than start time.

1st hour I had AA twice and KK three times.
1st KO after minraise and 2 limps I reraised a KK, 1st two folded, the shorty with 2k jammed, I called and his 26s did not catchup.
2nd KO I overplayed AQ but rivered a Q

Went out jamming a bad Ace and being called by a better Ace, one of these days I'll plug that leak.

HTA

Hi, my name is Bayne and yesterday I experienced Hoy tilt.

Still a little mad at self but I let a player at my table disrupt my game during FTOPS Event #2. I had already twice seen him all in cracking good Aces with double-suited monsters such as KJ75 and KT94 so when he limped and shorty re-raised I failed to isolate with my KKJT ds.

This was costly as solid SB felted me on a T84 (two of my suit flop).

Will have to miss the donkarama tonight as daughter as plans tonight so wife and I get an evening together alone. I am stupid but not too stupid to realize night out with wife will have greater long term benefits than poker.

My dad has discovered youtube and sent me this gem:

Not that there is anything wrong with it.

FTOPS #3 Dead Money

I found Chad's post inspirational today. I have won a sat into a Sunday Night HORSE tourney before but believe I have never collected real cash in a HORSE tourney. This would seem to leave me ideally qualified to compete in FTOPS 3.

FTOPS 2

Woke up at crack of 9 (Pacific), decided to warm up for FTOPS 2 by playing 27 player $15 SNG sat to FTOPS 2 and some $3/$6 PLO. Won $250 playing PLO cash so I decided to also goof off in SUPER-TURBOs. Won 1 seat in 27 player SNG and 1 seat in super-turbo so felt my PLO game was on.

1st table in FTOPS I had 4 card bingo player 2 seats to left, I let it impact my game and I went out in first 30 mins being a FCD with overpair to 2nd set from a solid player. So disgusted but next up is FTOPS 6.

PLO Strategy Guide Applied

In my defense I flopped a set of Aces, my read was opponent had a set of Kings, we got all in 1st hand, I was correct, turn was a King.

In Mookie typical strong poker was demonstrated, 4 limpers, I jammed a little pp from SB, KTs and QJs both called. JD (initials previous defined) Shnellnut eliminated me with J on turn.

I also had some fun in a 6-max PLO SNG for $55. I have to include two hands where my opponents felt need to follow Bobby Knight school of coaching.

It is really not much different than Hold'em, AKs vs. JJ is a race the other cards ability to hit 2 pairs narrows the odds plus the 79K combination is live for some low percentage straights.

Thing about all 3 hands is since it is PL in all cases pot odds vs. odds of winning justify all calls.

The other thing to note is hands with AA can be decent favorites but other cards have to work with the Aces for this to be true.

AAKK ds is mathematically best starting hand, JT98 ds is mathematically #7 , AAKK ds is 2:1 favorite over JT98 with neither flush draw live, 3:2 if JT98 has 2 live flush draws.

Winning at PLO requires good post-flop play, NLHE allows push and pray pre-flop to be enough.

PLO Tourney Strategy Guide

Since I have had success recently in PLO tournaments and FTOPS Event #2 is the KO PLO I thought I would not so humbly create a post about my "strategic thinking".

First a brief primer on starting hand selection:

Being dealt 4 cards means every player starts with 6 NLHE hands, caveat is that you do have to use 2 cards from hand. AA is the best hold'em hand but an Omaha hand consisting of AdAc9h4s is crap. AA is the only playable combination you hold. You have a pair and realistically need to flop an Ace to continue the hand if anyone shows strength.

A hand such as JsTd9s8d on the other hand consists of 6 mediocre NLHE hands and is an easy hand to play post flop. If you miss fold. If you flop 2p you also have a made straight or oesd. PLO requires ability to imagine possibilities on flop because realistically you should have near nuts or draw to nuts to compete for a big pot. Underboats are poison, 2nd straights & 2nd flushes are expensive.

Edward Hutchison developed a points system for determining starting hands to play, I don't use it but it does give a good picture of what hands are playable and what the win percentage is for a hand in pre-flop all in situation 9 handed. In general you want to restrict starting hand selection to 4 cards that "work together".

How to win a PLO tourney:

1.) In early stages of tourney never raise bad AA out of position. In PLO AA is just a pair.

2.) Cracking AA (or KK) hands is way to accumulate chips early. 4 midde connectors or 3 middle connectors and a pair are excellent AA cracking hands, double suited is nice but non-nut flushes are frequently punished. I am looking to flop a straight or set or top 2 or pair and oesd or wrap. Flopping nuts in PLO is nice but unless it is quads, big boat or straight flush you are vulnerable.

3.) Flop play in PLO is critical. Flopped straights are the most punished hand in PLO. Top set plus flush draw is 3:2 favorite against flopped straight that has no redraw. On flop of 589 holding 67 without redraw is in bad shape against QJT hands. It is important to observe who bets the naked crap flush draws. It is rare for a flop to occur in PLO where you are such a big favorite that the chaser does not have odds to call. Sizing bets so pot odds are not present after turn is sometimes required.

4.) You are going to have to hit some draws.

I cashed in $4k PLO tuesday night, one of the 4 card bingo players with AK67 1 suit flopped a flush against my AAKJ ds.

2nd hand of PLO DS a flush chacsing donk drawing to 2nd flush went runner runner straight to put me in "Bayne position".

Apologies for timing out in Bodog tourney, the Stud 8 Skillz series introduced some interesting theoretical developments that Stud 8 experts will be attempting to incorporate in the coming years.

FTOPS VII

Found the chart above as part of FTOPS 5, Event-8 recap. I could not resist posting as I don't even think Smokkee has managed to fold his way to a final table this weakly.

What I do remember about my run in this tournament is that for 1st two hours only hands I raised contained AA2 with one ace suited.

Hands I saw flops with contained AA or A2 or A3 or 4 cards above a 9 (in late position after a few limpers).

Post flop on the few hands I did play I either held the nuts or was drawing to the nuts, it was an evening of very disciplined O8 play and probably aided somewhat by wife and daughter being in Florida so there were no distractions.

In later hours when blinds got high enough that people would fold I opened up starting hand selection in postion and bullied my way to a few more pots and may have exploited my tight image (assuming anyone notices).

Being an Omatard means it is rare for me to be able to play a big field/big buy-in event so I look forward to FTOPS and WCOOP. Just hope I can dodge an inopportune river King this time.

Went out of Monday's $3k O8 as bubble boy when my AA2 ds lost to A338 which called preflop capped betting. He also called a 75T flop with capped betting and caught a 4 then a 2 for wheel.

Went out of MATH when tripJax typically overplayed a little pair and called a jam but sucked out set against my bigger pocket pair. I guess it was only fair since previously he had doubled me up when my mighty Q3s sucked out a flush (and a 3) against his KQ. Congrats on the win.

Bodog Blogger tournament with awesome series prizes and skill game is tonight.
