Reflections on Perspective

Economy doesn't seem that bad, prices are lower, there are bargains in stock market if you are sitting on cash. Things seem good .... until you are the one that is unemployed.

Poker is similar and I apparently committed faux paus.

Milestone Post

500th Post

Really the least significant of the milestones, especially when something like this or this would count as a post.

Today also marks 10 years in California.

For those considering move to California check out local tax laws. When I moved from Maryland I learned that California taxes income earned in the state, Maryland taxes income earned as resident. When I departed I left in middle of pay period and told accounting I did not need paycheck last day just process on normal period. By chance I gave them new California address before they processed as well. The no Maryland 8% with holding that last paycheck was a sweet bonus, especially on the 7 weeks accumulated vacation. Things may have changed or I may have done it wrong but I did file this way 9 years ago now.

Tomorrow marks 25 years since college Graduation.

I ran out of money so had to graduate after winter quarter. I always had so much fun spring quarter that I hung around extra quarter anyways, working selling beer for Braves and without tuition college is cheap.

Today Marks 2 weeks of "Unpaid Temporary Leave"

Market rally combined with real customer interest in product may mean it truly is temporary, CEO is still in talks to sell.

Enjoyed Championship week and am looking forward to NCAA tourney

Weight Tilt

Yesterday in PE they measured and weighed demon child. She came in at 5'5" and xxx* lbs.

She got home pissed off feeling this could not be correct and stormed into master bathroom and stripped down and weighed herself. This did not help because according to wife she came in at xxx* lbs on our scale too!

Last night while I played Skillz daughter and wife went to apartment gym. According to wife they turned on "The Biggest Loser" and daughter got into a zone where she pretended Jillian was yelling at her while she walked the treadmill. 70 minutes later and 330 calories burned they returned home.

They just left for another workout.

* Late edit: On way to school this morning I referred to daughter as my 3-D, fully interactive, xxx lb home entertainment center. She quickly educated me that I am NEVER to mention her weight again.

Skillz

I final tabled the Stud H/L Skills game. Got dealt a lot of hands like 69Q and have very little experience playing stud variants. tried to approach starting hands like O8 but always felt I was a card short of a good starting hand. I seemed to survive taking a stand at the right time for a few fortuitous doubles to roach to 5th.

In 1st day as "poker pro" had one other small tourney cash in Stars PLO8 turbo with a 27th (27 paid), I was 10th in chips going into my final hand but my AA25 was no good against slightly bigger stacks KK56. I <3 PokerStars.

Working at start-ups is a lot like playing tournament poker. You aren't going to cash at most of them, some of the beats are going to be bad but occaisonally you will run well and get a decent cash.

I have worked at 4 start-ups now, 3 of them created a product that worked and resulted in an IPO and 2 going under. The 4th company had a product that never quite worked but had good market timing and left me bankrolled to continue in start-up game.

Friend sent me a pointer to www.indeed.com, it scrapes jobs off of other job sites to one central location. Others in job search process should give a look and see what you think.

Temporary Unpaid Leave

Luckily I did not make a last longer bet with Hoy.

My permanent job at a temporary company has hit a bump, investors decided to not continue to finance as macro-economic factors look very bad for M&A activity. Unfortunately the wave of recent resignations also dropped company headcount below Warn Act provisions so I got notice in a Monday 5:30 meeting that unpaid leave is underway starting Tuesday (today).

I think I am most annoyed about them waiting to hold the meeting until late enough in day that I missed Riverchasers.

It also occurred to me today that summer before daughter was born I bought a life insurance policy. Price at time for a 15 year term policy was a lot cheaper than the 20 year term so I opted for 15. Original Insurance company was sold off long ago so current bill comes from AIG. Never really envisioned that I should have found a way to collect if company died within term rather than me.

On positive side as I was writing post my TT sucked out a chop against JJ in a STT when Jd fell on river for chopped board flush and A9 > TT on a T high straight.

Weekend Movie Review

Warning: May Contain Spoilers!

Friday Night I was tired when I got home from work, wife and (mainly) daughter wanted to go immediately to Cupertino to see "Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience". Christy Lemire gave it 1.5 stars. I have explained to wife in the past that I fawking hate driving from Mountain View (workplace) to Cupertino during rush hour and they still thought I would somehow want to drive 7 miles back through traffic to get to Mountain View and then proceed to Cupertino. The re-education process was quick and profane.

Saturday we did drive to Cupertino for daughter's eyebrow waxing which took 15 minutes and I believe I could achieve same service with 1/2 inch wide roll of duct tape at much lower cost followed by movie viewing. Jonas Brothers is outside of AMC's normal pricing schedule and was $15/ticket. Daughter's review was that it was "awesome" but has not provided other details.

I chose to see Liam Neeson in "Taken" for $6. It was a story about a father's love for his daughter where he gave up his job to live near her and ex-wife and when she is kidnapped he tries to find her killing everyone involved in her abduction until she is rescued. It was a big gang involved and only Arnold in Commando may have had a higher body count in a child's rescue.

Afterwards I felt need to give daughter a hug.

She then hit me.

Running Better

During Survivor Thursday night there was a commercial for the "Santa Cruz Boardwalk Clam Chowder Cook Off". Kid loves clam chowder (New England not Manhattan), wife grew up a couple miles off a beach so I alertly picked up on their interest and suggested we go. Soon after the strangest things started happening in the Super Turbos. I had KK hold up against A rag. I had pocket pairs hold up against smaller pocket pairs and I finally defeated ATo while holding AK. I even started winning flips against "Snuffie". I cashed my 1st 5 Thursday night with 3 1sts before losing with KK against ATo and TT, but finished Thursday with 7 cashes out of 9 and 5 1sts.
Friday and Monday I also saw a rainbow as I headed to work after dropping kid at school and end of rainbow did seem to land near work parking lot each time. Today I learned we are partnering to bid a contract with 2 different partners so I am hopeful about long term employment and maybe a little bit of a cashout.
Teenage daughter was even nice to me this morning. Not a bad Monday at all.

It's Cold and Damp and My Sinuses are killing me

We need the rain and Lake Tahoe area has gotten a much needed 6 feet of snow or so since Friday. But rain somehow feels colder here then I remember it being back east.

During Event #24 of FTOPS XXXVI I managed to cooler 2 people for bounties early I had 77, CO had 33 and button had AT on a TT3 flop. Button raiser made a smallish c-bet on flop and I called as did CO only to see a 7 peel off on turn. I checkraised my boat and saw a wonderful shove and call ahead and watched a blank turn vault me into top 10. The 4th flop I saw near the break I defended my big blind against an EP raiser and 2 callers with an 87 sooooooooooted and was rewarded with a T96 flop. EP QQ went to felt on flop and I claimed 3rd bounty and vaulted into 3rd. Chad popped up in chat to verify I was just coolering people to accumulate chips rather than had acquired real poker skills. AT some point in 2nd or 3rd hour I noticed that about every 3 minutes another red pro bounty was announced. How many red pros does FullTilt have at this point????

LJ commented on my ginormous 200 BB stack and I pointed out key to my game was I had not picked up KK yet. Within 10 minutes I got my 1st KK and called a jam from the aggrodonk to my right who was only player at table with even half my stack and had jammed such stellar hands as A8, 77 and QJs for his life previously. He of course had AA this time and I did not improve. 7 hands later I picked up QQ and was priced in against a shorty jam and of course he had AA as well returning me to average stack size. I played decent aggressive poker until with rising blinds and antes I tried a resteal holding ATs from BB and button's AQ held up to knock me out.

On the positive side it is payday. Having a permanent job at a temporary company means you can really only be sure of receiving one more check. This is 1st company I have worked for that pays on 15th and last day of month AND pays on Monday (or Tuesday if holiday) if pay period ends on Sunday. Had a couple day sweat this weekend wondering am I unemployed and will California still be issuing IOUs as unemployment benefits if I am unemployed.

I do find the "threat" of laying off workers if budget is not approved to be ludicrous when the Republican state senators who are holding up budget want state spending cut more, a cap and not to increase taxes.

Blogging Blahs

Macro Economics trumps Micro Economics.

Company I work for has a product that works but carriers can't/aren't spending money in short term that mean long term savings.

But I figure it is easier for CEO to interview for all of us (looking for merger/acquisition) than for me to get off my butt and look for another job.

For 1st time today we were delivered 3 gallon water bottles instead of the 5 gallon that we used to have. This may be last downsizing straw!

Nothing interesting is happening on poker front. In tournaments I can't get past that one hand that makes the difference between going deep and minor cash. Cash PLO play sees ebbs and flows but at end of day bankroll is same.

Now I have to figure out if I can save $1,194.63 for the next blogger weekend :)

Bankroll Blow Up

Saturday I ran really bad in SuperTurbo's. I had 6 bubbles where I lost with either pp to one over or with a better Ace. Spiral continued into Sunday Morning to point that I put $30 of my remaining $32 on FullTilt into a last Super Turbo. I won and went on a tear including a 4th in PLO KO. OPR did not exactly capture run but bankroll is back to four figures. knock wood. I do like when upswing seems to start with FTOPS coming up.
Congrats to Steeler's on Super Bowl win. Bad beat for Cardinals that Steelers got touchdowns at end of both halve's that were marginal enough to trigger review.

More Housing (Poker at end)

Calculated Risk (one of my favorite financial blogs) has a post today commenting on Bay Area house pricing. Apparently Housing data for December was just released and the median price is down 50% from peak and that foreclosure sales accounted for half the housing resales.

When I look inside the data it is the two least desirable counties that have higher sales volumes and bigger median price drops which leads me to believe that it is the "starter homes" where people stretched finances and accepted commutes that was hardest hit.

Sales volume was 6889, which puts ~3500 of these homes as foreclosure sales and new median price is $330k. If half of drop in median is due to mix in sales and half is drop in value then State of California now gets $1300 less in property taxes then it did a year ago on 3500 homes for a quick $5M drop in tax revenues for the last month in one county. On positive side those 3500 foreclosed homes would have previously been defaulting on the property taxes.

Throw in SoCal's Inland empire economy destruction of lost construction jobs and foreclosures and 60 or so employees at my company who will stop paying income tax in near future and I am beginning to see how a state can be $14B short in revenue off a $40B budget.

Astin jackAced me successfully (defeating JJ) a few hands later HeffMike reraised JackAce against my QQ and failed to deliver a jackAce beat. I make comment in chat (still pissed about being short due to Astin beat) along lines of "It's a blogger tourney, you can't possibly fold jackAce" sorry Heff. I avenge my earlier beat when Astin calls my raise with the jackAces little brother the jacKing off and my pocket Astins hold up against his flopped top pair. Mookie eliminates me when through some miracle his JJ wins a flip against my AK when he dodges a river King kick to the junk.

I am still running like a god at PLO (40.88 BB/100) yesterday cracking AA with high connectors and KK with low connectors, (I love the hold'em visitors that can't fold AA KJ69 board). In KK's defense he thought he had outs after flopping top set but I had already turned my straight flush when I raised his pot bet on turn.

Mook Day

The Mookie is tonight, after pwning Pvan in Monday's NYRPS I feel it is again time to issue a "Rue the Day Schaubs" warning.

I saw a classic theonion piece via reddit.com. So sad when over the top satire looks prescient.

We are 24 hours into this Obama Presidency, I am not seeing change yet! I met up with a former co-worker for beer (and to compare jobs in Valley notes) and met another EE who is long time Valley resident. He was trying to convince us that NOW is the best time to buy a home. Most laughable part of his argument was that he could not afford to sell his current house to move into a bigger home due to Property Taxes nor did it make sense to sell his home and downsize now that kids have moved out because he would only be pulling couple $100k of equity profit but his propert taxes would climb. I looked at movoto this morning out of curiosity, I love that $800k is asking price for a "single family home" with ~12 feet of open space to next door neighbors wall and a pipestem driveway AND parking is so hard to find that the picture advertising house has a SUV parked two wheels over curb to allow passage.

It has long been the american dream to own home to protect against rising prices but I don't see how current financial mess ends until housing prices do drop to levels ~4x local household income.

Locally I can rent a house for ~2x the property taxes would be to buy same house. At those levels I am not sure if 0% interest on 30 year loan motivates me to purchase.

Football Wrap Up

The Football Play of the weekend was the blocked Field Goal in this clip.

Officials had a pretty horrific weekend:

1) Blew the 1st half Kickoff call in Phil. v Az. due to ball never hit the Eagles nor did it ever go out of bounds. How is that not reviewable???

2) Hoy mentioned the pass interference on Philadelphia's final 4th down. I know there is some leeway when defender falls down and makes "incidental contact" but really.

3) Pittsburgh's punter still has not been touched, and how can that have been the personal foul variety??? How was Ryan Clark's spear of McGahee (arms crossed tight to body, lead with helmet, hunching head close to body, that is textbook spear) not a personal foul?

Pampas

I have spent last 2 days running like a god playing PLO cash.

3 Flopped quads, including once against flopped Aces over boat and another against AA that turned flush. But the main thing is those pesky set vs. wrap coinflips on flop have gone my way from either side. I believe I am still playing rationaly as I have just laughed when I folded overpairs to board on flop and turned sets.

Over last 600 hands I am +50 BB/100. Know it can't last but will enjoy while it does.

Decided to cash out a little and take the family out. Dinner tonight will be Brazilian. It is a rare treat for me as it is lots of BEEF on sticks. w00t.

Light over shower went out and when I went to change I noticed fixture was painted closed. I mentioned to wife I would need to find a utility knife, she mentioned to apartment manager while waited in community room for kid to get off bus and voila we discovered we don't even have to replace light bulbs in fixed fixtures. Just when I thought living in apartment couldn't get any softer then homeownership. I am sure there is a light bulb premium in rent but I sort of like not having to deal with the light bulb in trash or disposing of CFLs properly due to mercury.

Take one stab at a job

Photo is from Queensland Tourism Board.
Apparently the Queensland tourism board has created a 12 hour a month job to be an island caretaker. Job-seekers can apply at Islandreefjob.com. Pay seems okay since the duties involve vacationing and exploring the Barrier Reef. I may still apply but snorkeling seems required. Luckily I saw another story that gives me a way to raise cash for snorkeling lessons.
Full story of job can be found here.
Founder of current company came up with product idea while snorkeling, maybe I can too.
Edit: Mentioned the selling 14 yo daughter story to boss. He pointed out that demon child would be returned so I could make money on both ends of transaction.
Edit (part deux): I let slip boss's comment with daughter and that she is referenced as demon child on occasion. I must now add disclaimer that I was kidding since daughter can be humourless.

Nice Season Eagles and Ravens

Sorry Raven's fans and all the Eagle's fans.

My sports betting has been atrocious so you are doomed.

I also have Raven's at 14:1 to win SuperBowl so they may survive only to crush me later.

Have to do a pot odds calculation for work. What size pot am I potentially looking at if company gets acquired vs. what are odds of acquisition vs. how long a period of unemployment can I expect if company goes under. VP that recruited me to move down here made that calculation and left company last week. But he also cut his commute from 60 miles to 15 miles and no longer will have to drive through San Francisco. Luckily my start-up bankroll managment is better than poker's version.

I do have advice for other parent's: It seems like a good idea to have allowed child to learn self defense skills. But as they get bigger it hurts if they reflexively strike you in chest. She came in from shopping and said she was cold and I offered to give her hug to warm but got too close.

AfterMath

Last year in losing $11 prop bet to Recess I also lost ~$1000 off bankroll.

This year I won $26 from Recess, lost $35 playing SuperTurbos but now have weekly rakeback payments and a sick $250+ rakeback payment.

If not for stupid prop bet I would have quit playing during Tuesday Night downslide which certainly had some gross beats as contributers but probably has some bad plays. The K7s > KK (I called) and T9o >TT (he called) to bubble were certainly the most painful as they were on bubble against equivalent stack.

Superturbo play this week led me to a few conclusions:

1) Color Code who calls jams with any Ace or any 2 face.
2) Color code those who raise ATC from CO, button, SB.
3) Never fold AQ+ or TT+
4) I have been stunned by how often after I jam AK UTG I find an AT caller calling even from UTG+1.
5) I have also been stunned by sone of the folds I have seen near the bubble. I think most egregious was a fold for 65 chips behind as the shorty in the BB with 60/120 blinds, when other 3 stacks were in 700-900 range.

1st Prop Bet Win of year

The Points Tard and I had a prop bet to see who could clear 11,000 points 1st. Somehow King of Points had failed to even reach Gold one month so level was set at clearing his bonus threshold.
434 Turbo SNG, plus a few PLO and O8 hands later I claim victory. Ship the $4k buyin!
To answer StB's comment, no I probably am too burned out to actually clear bonus by 10th.

No More Slowplay

To paraphrase Dread Pirate Roberts "Good night Recess. Good work. Sleep well. I'll most likely kill you in the afternoon."
1st Mookie of year was last night, I had AA against Jec's QQ. Then in the span of one orbit I was dealt KK, KK, AA and QQ, sadly lightning had AA on an all baby board after turn.

Break Even Poker

We have all read Waffles's claims of "break-even" poker, but I've got documentation biatches.

Stupid, stupid, stupid and FINAL points clearing prop bet with Recess has led to a ridiculous amount of SuperTurbo play. 61 tourneys a day (I am no Chad), $14k in prizes (woot), all for a simply PHENOMENAL $46 in profit.

Thankfully bet will end by this weekend, I will get huge rakeback transfer this week and bonus will also clear.

More Mis-Information (or is it?)

Two hands above are from Superturbos so action is aipf, AK hand I jammed UTG, AA I called from SB. Both plays I think are automatic in SuperTurbo.

Been playing a crazy amount of Superturbos as it is fastest way to accumulate points since it is rare that I want to multitable 5/10 + O8 nor are there usually more than 1 full ring game on FullTilt.

Mookie is tomorrow and IT and Schaub's have another prop bet. I guess I can understand Schaub's picking LJ over me for anything other than to back him up in a bar fight (she's meaner but a little clumsy when drinking).

But on principle.

Rue the Day Schaubs!

Tard Race 2009

Most of my points have come in super-turbos, since January 1 have gotten 215 in at a slight profit. ChicagoAPA has gotten in 1405 which I can only assume to mean he is a bot or he has a sick prop bet on line. Don't quite know where Recess stands in race but he has gotten in half as many super-turbos I have.
On positive side after 100th chippie you become completely numb to the bad beats. 4 tabling chippies mean you lose a 70/30 to A rag (who called) about once every 15 minutes.
I now understand why Chad issued the rule "If you tell me a bad beat story I will punch you in mouth". I have decided this is a good rule so be warned.

Late Pimp

I am the face of Bad Bankroll Managment so I would be remiss if I did not point out Julius Goat's fine tournament.

Consuming 1/4 of my screen for a superstack tourney may prove too costly in my battle with the point's tard.
In a particular bad beat my live Morgan Hill tournament consumed a lot of time for me to finish 2nd which ate into my playing time.

2009 is here

I thought my being on the leaderboard was cool until I noticed sprstoner was 7th in NLHE and 4th overall in the medium buyins.
Hoy fell victim to the "Waffle's gambit" in final 2008 Mookie. The delusional one feel's he hits gutters at 50% and two live cards is a flip so inevitable result is busto.
I put waffles cooler powers to test and placed a $10 bet that wife and I would have threesome with female blogger waffles knew. I of course lost showing there is a limit to the "waffle's fade". But won $25 when he of course failed in his delusional quest to reach top spot in any of 4 tourney leader boards. Now I just have to wait for ad money to hit Mr. Breakeven's account so he can get paid. Hopefully I won't have to wait as long as Tragedy continues to wait for Waffle's to write post praising the IT blog empire.
Whether Hoy is correct about "no one making a wager with waffles" for "chip dumping" will become moot if waffle continues to Welsh on bet with IT.
I cracked and entered into another bonus clearing bet with the points dork. I am sure his uber-dorkness will twitter a running points count but I'll never see it there.

Goals for 2009

1. Bluff LJ once out of a big pot. Lucko has already figured out that this is a ploy to keep LJ paying off monster hands but I think this year the bluff will happen.

2. Have a positive ROI in MTT on FullTilt AND PokerStars.

I was shocked to discover I had $123K in tourney cashes this year. Not so shocked that I had spent a little more than 123k in buyins to achieve this when looking at balances.

My biggest cash of the year doesn't even show up on stars because it occurred by winning a step 6 WCOOP Main Event seat. August 17th I won a step at all 6 levels turning $7.50 in 5200 $W.

This year I want profitable on both.

3. Do not go bust trying to clear IronMan bonus before the points dork.

4. Try to play within bankroll managment guidelines.

5. Win a BBT qualifying tourney.

6. Spend more time with wife and family, this summer's jolt was a reminder of what's important. But was also an eye-opener of what a warm and supportive community I have joined online.

7. Remind Recess he is a dork whenever he starts to forget.

2008 In Review

I set forth goals for 2008 and now is time to review:

1. Keep better records so I know at the end of each day what games and levels I should be playing.

Record keeping better, I always knew what games/levels I should return to when BR low.

2. Adhere to stop loss limits each day.

Colossal failure on a few days but had no 4 figure loss days which is an improvement

3. Outside of blogger events and freerolls focus play on Omaha to build bankroll to earn enough money to play WSOP preliminary event w/o it meaning BR suicide.

This was worded too vaguely to be measurable.

4. Make 2nd day of WSOP prelim event (probably involving 4 cards).

Failed

5. Final table a big buy-in online tourney (avoid crumbling under Final Table pressure if anyone has a piece of me).

Had a 7th (and 12th) in PLO $20k and 3rd in Stars O8, plus got 4th in Stars $200 PLO when 1 outed (sadly 4th was bubble)

6. Win the $4k Guarantee PLO once this year.

Done, sadly have 2 seconds with 3+ 90% opportunities for 1st since Lucko prop bet.

7. Don't go bust on any site!

Failed, luckily I have enablers that help me swap from site to site as I avoided going busto on all sites at same time

8. Don't piss off any bloggers with my posts or comments. Plays at tables to tilt are part of big picture.

NFW I ever achieve this, it is foolishness to suggest.

Biggest shocker is apparently I gave up on goal of bluffing LJ, I guess I took the no playing with rule to heart and decided it was pointless. There were a couple of rule lapses but no successful bluffs, will have to consider adding no bluff rule for next year.

On positive side I had declared "2008 - The Four Card Year", I discovered that there are rankings on Bluff Magazine in spring and with 2 weeks to go in year I am hanging on to the 10th ranking. Sadly my PLO tourney play was only marginally profitable as the sats to FTOPS PLO do not count but the not cashing in FTOPS PLO does count.

3+ Hours of life gone

I played a 10k person SNG, I can't help but think I wasted valuable monitor space.

PokerStars Tournament #130145060, No Limit Hold'em
Buy-In: $1.00/$0.10
10000 players
$10000.00 added to the prize pool by PokerStars
Total Prize Pool: $20000.00
Tournament started 2008/12/28 18:57:15 ET
Dear bayne_s,
You finished the tournament in 445th place.
A $8.00 award has been credited to your Real Money account.

I also outlased 33k+ other donkeys in the Star's "World Record" $500k. Key to run was not picking up KK until late. I was down to 5 BBs and A rag had to jam from button. Rude part was when 23o called off last 6 BBs with 23o and turned 2nd pair to knock me out.

Chat from $125k

Merry Christmas

Teenage daughter woke us up at a reasonable 8:15 to open presents. There were no ugly incidents this year. The gift I chose for daughter was ipod docking station speakers. Kid's reaction was "I'll keep in closet because I have a CD player." Learned despite kid ripping all her CDs into itunes she only has 2 CDs loaded into ipod.

Wife 'liked" her gift "but chain of necklace was too short" being male should I know more than choker or necklace?

Now we move to 2nd phase of Christmas celebration which is phone calls to east coast relatives. The 3 of us are approaching 10th anniversary of move to California. Kid is truly a Californian now so don't think we could move for another 5 years without repercussions.

Stage 3 is watching Hoops, eating and eggnog.

A PC Happy Holidays to those not celebrating Christmas.

Personal Choices

While completing 1st trip of moving luggage to car as we checked out of Harvey's Lake Tahoe this weekend I saw a woman in sweats get off elevator and I thought she had swimsuit straps showing. I got back to room and snapped picture of her swimming. Pool deck still has snow accumulations because it was 26 degrees out. Desk clerk told me at check out that they heat the water to 85 degrees. I have got to think that it is an invigorating sprint to get out of pool, get to towel and get inside. There is also a hot tub in picture heated to 105, I love a good soak expecially after skiing (when I did ski) but that did not seem inviting either.
I chose to quit playing poker on AbsolutePoker in late 2006 because they rarely had a good Omaha table. I told UltimateBet they had to give me rakeback or I would take my business elsewhere about the same timeframe. I set a deadline and transferred all my AP money to UB and got busted by DaveBreal playing $2/$4 PLO8 as I decided that I was going to cash out for $1000+ or nothing. He hit one of his 4 scoop outs to bust me, but it was top set + nut or 2nd low vs. nut low + wheel wrap + flush draw.
I subsequently have played on sites when they have given me $10 or $25 to come back but doubt I will make a deposit again. It is my choice and really FullTilt has been best site for me anyway.
Chad and Hoy and others (no link for you as I will not be outing you to the moral outrage of others) have decided they like UBs tourney structure enough that it outweighs the risk that UB will cheat them out of bankrolls. Poker is a game of risk/reward, they are adults and able to form their own decision.
Mondogarage has a post up outlining an opposing view. I know that going to WMD/Iraq/Saddam references is reflexive for the nanny state liberals. "Bush is evil" is 2000s version of 1950s comparisons to Hitler. It is intellectually lazy and I find it particularly annoying when used in Chad attack. Lightning had an awesome comment using Animal House reference in his response to Mondo.
The final paragraph:
"But if you're okay playing on a site known to cheat, then you may be equally okay with playing in a tournament while girly chatting with someone else at your table during the tournament? Then you might just be okay with "just this once" IMing about a hand while its in progress? It's a slippery slope, is all I'm saying."
Is quite a leap. If you have ever met Chad or Hoy or spent any time with them I doubt you would think they are capable of cheating. However it is reasonable to think of them as arrogant assholes.

My week in the $4k

Monday - flop 3 p + flush draw, bet pot, 3rd flush draw repots, AA82 initial raiser calls turn Ace, I river losing boat.

Tuesday - flop set of Aces, bet 1/2 pot, bottom set repots, I jam for a tiny bit more getting 9:1 on call bottom set rivers quads.

Wednesday - flop middle set against top and bottom pair, it is not the preflop raiser that CR A high flop. I jam he hits river Ace.

2 outs, 1 out, 2 out week so far and I ask waffles for his take:

sirfwalgman: poker is dumb
sirfwalgman: lol
Bayne: can I quote that
sirfwalgman: yeah
sirfwalgman: say "Only idiots like Prison Guard waterboard wannabees define themselves by poker"

Late edit:
Ironically right after I hit publish I eliminated Mookie from the Mookie with a river 2 outer and taunted him before I made pre-flop call with AQ (vs AA).

Work Lunch Question

No Poker Content:

We had a going away lunch for one of the co-workers today. Company is small so each time someone leaves it is sad because very noticable.

We ended up with two tables of 16 and two separate checks (with gratuity already added for parties of 6+)

Table I was seated at had one woman but she was the guest of honor. Our check was $357 and change so "table captain" collected $24 from everyone but guest of honor.

Other table was comprised of 10 women and 6 men, woman who made reservations was handed the check and they passed check around table and each put in what they thought was fair portion.

I did politely wait until after I left restaurant to laugh at the squabbling over who had not put in fair share and left them short.

What is driver behind choice to split evenly vs. paying proportionally?

Today I had diet coke rather than beer and was not influenced to not split.

Winter WPBT Report

Friday I arrived at MGM later than planned.

In a wafflesque move the only Southwest flight departing San Jose with a delay was mine and it was 2+ hours late.

The MGM Sports bar had a deal going where you could buy a $9 Beer in a 32 (or 44) oz glass and get $5 refills all night. I definitely extracted value from that and got sloshed.

Apologies to Blogger Mixed game for my horrible poker faux paus of commenting on a hand in progress I was not involved with:

Blinders raised 3rd street with an Ace up and led out again when he also got an Ace on 4th, "At which point STANDING next to table I blurted out "You know he's got a set to lead out", I then slunk away from table in shame, I did sneak back to table to see that PirateLawyer had called him down with a set of 7s and was somewhat relieved that my comment had helped Blinder's reinforce image and PL either made good read or was being calling station and had not let my comment influence him either. As penance I drank more.

I talked to JoeSpeaker for the 1st time, goal was to apologise to him for going off on him in chatbox a couple of years ago during WPBT PLO. It ended up costing me $2 as the bad beat that prompted my blowup was mentioned and the cagey Rooster was quick to insist on $1, I also had to pay Mr Speaker off so lesson learned.

Rest of evening is a drunken blur other than a brutal craps session with Vinnay and then staggering back to Bally's via Planet Hollywood and taking losses on 2 more craps tables.

Kudos to Falstaff and the Venetian for a fine tournament. Saw some old nemesis and made a new nemesis.

Chad once asked in chat "Do you ever win a pot where you haven't coolered someone?"

Joshua found out the answer the hard way when he dared raise my BB with AKo and I was holding crabs. The A K 3 flop sealed his fate when he indignantly shoved on my check raise and saw he was the one drawing to 4 outs that did not come.

I busted Carmen's mom when her top pair on flop was no good against my AA to become big stack at table.

It was short lived as BigMike won a flip aginst my QQ so I was back to starting stack when I was moved next to Carmen and opposite the old nemesis. It was mostly frustrating table as I was card dead and not getting a lot of 1st raise opportunity Pender to my right was raising a lot in front of me and was willing to flip for pots if reraised with hands better than I was being dealt but a wide range. Still hovering near starting stack and blinds in 300/600 range I told Columbo I was going to have to raise his BB since I could always out flop him and looking at my cards was a waste of time. I had quickly peeked at AKdd and raised and Columbo asked SB if he looked. It folded to Columbo and after much delay and me asking "would it help to know if I looked?" Columbo asked how much I had behind before raising to 4k. I quickly jammed to 9500 and Columbo tanked again before folding. I showed my AK which gave me the advantage in what MiamiDon had billed as the "Battle of the Cockroaches" and could claim that victory when Columbo exited 1st.

I managed to lay an AJ (sooted) outflopping AK beat on Change for a well earned ceramic donkey. I am hoping I get to keep but daughter saw it this morning and made some comment about it being "too artsy" for me. I fear my trophy may disappear into daughter's room by the time I get home.

The poker tourney structure had an ugly twist when it suddenly went from 1k/2k 100 ante to 3k/6k 300 ante. I had a lot of 2 small hands which I folded until I was down to 2500 behind my 3k BB when Astin raised. I manged to crack his JJ with Q9 and built up to around 20k chips when Dawn Summers jammed UTG (for 3.5 BBs), the aggressive flip seeking Pender rejammed and I looking at JJ decided it was time to triple of go home. It was good spot as I was against 99 and AT but of course Ace came on flop and I did not improve while Dawn was shouting "Now Hold"

Sunday was spent watching Bucs lose a close game with Falcons, watching Dawn absolutely pwn CK in football knowledge quiz, taunting Recess and Buddy during Ravens Steelers game and getting further crushed at the craps tables.

Ran so out of gas on trip report

Saw clip above on Rachel Maddow Show.
Now that we are past election ban on watching Countdown, Maddow or Fox News has been lifted in Bayne household. I like that dude included last prediction.

Got home a tiny bit too late to play Bodog thanks to software update. Thanks Bodog for timing of that one.

Prop Bet Progress

Smokkee increased his Bodonkey lead on waffles leaving world's worst poker player in a position where he might say it is Mookie or nothing for prop bet. I managed to cash and was chip leader when bubble broke (as well as a large portion of tournament). I managed to river a set early against oossuuu and flop a set against (non con artist) donkette to chip up early. Sadly I "Smokkeed" blowing off most of my chips with A-rag and the rest with a small pp.

Software and Poker

As an Omatard I have not seen a need to use poker software. Knowing if someone only raises AAxx or KKxx hands and who is willing to go broke flopping bottom set or go to felt with non-nut flush is enough information to make PLO quite lucrative.

I have decided to make a foray into NLHE cash again because to play PLO cash anymore requires me to play sporadically full ring or 6 Max which is much higher variance. Reading hand histories from the spiritpot crew, recess, bone and gnome are constantly starting with lines like "villain is a donk, 40/11 over 55 hands" or villain is Tag, 15/10".

I have received recomendations weighing merits of Poker Track 3 vs. Hold'em manager, suggestions for hot key utilites and SNG signup utilities from Chad and a myriad of other functions such as hand history displays and bankroll managment software. http://www.pokersoftware.com/ is an affiliate site (that pokerXfactor's 'Fox' seems involved with) that offers reviews of many poker software titles categorised by type and if you sign up for a poker site through them you can get software 'free' through pokersoftware.com. I will apparently have to wait for a new room or try carbon poker out as I already have an account with every other site.

The Omaha Indicator looks intriguing to try as Omaha does not draw nearly the tool development as Hold'em but would like to see what it's odds calculator tells me as I play and the "You have the Nutz" indication may come in handy on occaison when wife/kid are providing distractions. Problem would be any software that alerts you that "YOU HAVE THE NUTS!" would violate the one player/hand standard and be cheating while Stars and Tilt have included TOS caveats that Hold'em Manager and PT3 data gathering from tables you occupy is not cheating.

StatikKling also seems to have written a poker application that Combines multiple Full Tilt Tourney files into a single file that looks interseting when loading tourney into PokerTracker or a hand replayer.

PokerSoftware.com also has reviews of various SNG/ICM trainers, boards to discuss poker software and many more categories for all of us to explore as we try to improve poker games.

They may even have something that can help the Worlds Worst Poker Player!

Latest Prop Bet

After seeing the deluded one's post I immediately saw an opening to goad the World's Worst Prop Bettor (WWPB) into a wager. If WWPB takes over top spot on the Mookie, Bodog, Skillz or NYRPS by the end of year.

My analysis of chances.
Bodog ZERO
Skillz ZERO
NYRPS ZERO (Game is PLO next week too bwahahaha)
Mookie 5% since LJ has assumed Mookie ownership.

Bodonkey Recap

As I drove into work this morning I heard this song

during the Woody Show on Live105 as part of a "worst local band" segment. Song lyrics still cracked me up.

Similar talent was on display at the Bodonkey last night, I had two hands lose to rivered gutters, got dealt AA three times and only collected the blinds (once when Hoy gave me a walk in BB) and had an A rag lose to a desperate Hoy shove of KQs when river Ace gave Hoy flush. The UTG limp call with JTo was the most surprising aspect of how that hand played out.

Mookie is tonight and I should make it as I have completed anniversary preparations.
Been married 14 years 365 days now. I will have to check with east coast friends on where they set the over/under.

"1940s Offense"

Watch CBS Videos Online

A bitter sports expert referred to the Georgia Tech Offense as a "1940s Offense" as they ran all over his team in a previous game.

I missed the 2nd quarter of the Georgia Tech @ Georgia game as I had to go with wife as she got "routine mammogram". Ladies please get checked (Waffles will examine too but he is no expert).

We managed to get to StJohn's for lunch (they have a close to authentic Philly Cheesesteak available) and the start of a very enjoyable 3rd quarter. Outscoring rivals 24-0 in a quarter while outgaining them 204 - 1 is sweet.

I giglied Saturdays with DrPauly when I put Spaceman on AA rather than set of kings.

Moving from Petaluma

My wife has been busting my chops lately for moving from Petaluma which had lower cost of living. Momentum turned last night as demon child was slated to go to Casa Grande High School if we hadn't moved.

Will still try to bust guest bounty player Eric "Rizen" Lynch in the Bodog Blogger Tournament Series tonight. Although it will not provide the same joy as busting waffles when he makes a donkey move.

I did play some lunchtime PLO and Limit O8. Making money is clearly possible but there is some variance. In limit O8 there were numerous occaisons where people chased an A2 low on possible flush board one card to come (heads up or with many) and there was lots of betting non nut draws and non nut hands.
Lock does not offer rakeback and I did not study bonus program enough to evaluate.

The Waffles Gift

Tonight the deluded one is the Bounty boy in the Bodog poker tourney. He was interviewed by bodog (obviously before his shallow Mookie run) and exhibited the extent of his lack of self-awareness. 9:05 PM ET on Bodog try to be blogger with position as he will exit early.

I made cameo appearance on BD Radio but every time I spoke my wife thought I was talking to her.

Continued a trend in 4k of going out 40-60th with AA. Some clown raised AT74 (suited Ace) I reraised my AAT8 getting 4300 of my 6k chips in preflop only to see Q72 rainbow flop where I got jammed and lost on turn 7. Beauty of hand is every time money goes in dude is 2:1 dog but once he calls pre-flop he is committed on whiffed flop as well.

Non-poker content follows:

US Bank has completed their fraud "investigation" and have concluded I opened "premier line of credit" and made transfer at "financial institution" on Aug 8. Wife and I do have a joint account at US Bank but it is really her account and my only trip to a US Bank branch was to pick up a moneygram when FullTilt's bank transfer and check requests weren't working for me. I am quite sure I would have remembered doing paperwork for line. I was quite drunk Aug 8 and spent most of day at Planet Hollywood's Pleasure pit playing blackjack, don't believe I borrowed an I-Phone to do on-line banking. Their customer service has been appallingly bad as they also refused to talk to my wife about the line sending her on full blown monkey tilt.

My theory on what really happened was a bank employee opened account for me in order to meet quota or bonus and there must be some transfer of funds component to bonus as funds were transfered from new account to account of wife's.

I would like to request of blogger community when you open new bank account do not choose US Bank! But if you do you were warned so your fault.

My Plan for Auto Industry

Hoy presented his take on auto industry yesterday and I feel it is only fair that the Silicon Valley slant also be applied to problem.

The main beneficiary of the Big 3 automakers current product line is OPEC. So let Saudi Arabia buy them out. They would be following HP's model of producing printers at break-even (waffles accounting) while selling the ink for the profits.

When I was in college (1980-1984) a few of my friends managed to get "union jobs" in steel mills and auto manufacturing in rust belt. They generally got paid $17/hour, 1.5x over 40 and 2.5x for Sunday hours. They would work 70 hour weeks until they hit 490 total hours because at 500 hours they got benefits. I know unions have made some concessions since then but I have to believe Big 3 have fatally flawed managment/union relationship that no amount of bailout money can truly fix.

Getting older sucks, but it beats the alternative.
Originally I had 7 Uncles, the evil uncle died almost 20 years ago.
Last 12 months 3 more uncles have died with most recentdeath coming yesterday. Being in late 70s the recent deaths are not unexpected by actuarial tables but losing 3 of the 4 in that age group seems like low odds.

RIP Jerry

Bodog tonight offers chance to bust Evelyn Ng.

In a funk

My mindset is really not right for poker, but I continue to play.

My uncle that taught me about investing (though he refused to teach me about selling short or buying puts) died today due to cancer.  Unfortunate thing about reaching mid 40s is the older generation of your family tends to be passing.

My parents and sister visited him this past weekend and shared a story that made me smile.

"Aunt Becky appears to be holding up fairly well.  All his affairs have been taken care of including funeral arrangements.  He will be cremated with the services at Wrightsville Beach at the Methodist Church.  Becky still had enough spunk left to give the funeral home a dressing down.  They tried to sell her a $9,000 casket and she asked it they were out of their fucking minds.  She wasn't   accustomed to burning boxes that expensive.  This harangue apparently went on for a few minutes.   I think they were glad to finally get her out of there.  The ashes will be placed in a Memorial Bench which has space for two."

Ten Percent

The Governator has proposed a 1.5% sales tax increase which will bring local sales taxes to 10%.
I think a portion of my income is already taxed at 9% by the state.
10% of my co-workers were laid off by my company this week.
The stock market is down 10% since election.

And it feels like I have a 10% chance to have a bigger pocket pair old up when approaching the bubble of a tournament.

Instead of a top 5 stack I am out. kinzite had a few other suckouts to get to a top 3 stack when money bubble broke only to manage to go out 27th. I have no idea what it takes to go from 3rd to out when it was 27 paid.
