More Bodog PP

Had KK, QQ and JJ during my brief appearance in Bodonkey last night.

Lost with all because bloggers can't be expected to fold 99 (aipf).
The  KT or KJ against ep raiser or 66 limp calling a raise seem like minor offense in comparison.

Wife was too nervous to watch election coverage until I told her CNN had declared Obama winner in Ohio.  Watching Oprah and Jesse Jackson and many others crying when Obama was declared next President reminded me of how I felt when Red Sox won the World Series in 2004.  In hindsight that seems silly, baseball is just a game, all men are truly created equal today.
Chicas still have to wait though ;)

Demon child was funny because my parents called to wish her a happy birthday.  She told my mom about mock election at school and when asked who she voted for sheepishly told my mom "Obama" then quickly handed me the phone.  This contrasted greatly from how she celebrated each time a state was declared for Obama and how she gleefully laughed or taunted Pat Buchannon as he appeared on TV.

I find myself somewhat saddened because although I wanted Obama to win, I respect McCain's desire to eliminate influence of money on elections and ironically he will almost certainly be the last candidate to accept public financing.

An Historic Day

Today Demon Child turned 14, this is last Presidential election that she does not get to vote where I got to vote. Gawd I feel old.  In mock election in her school it was 236 votes Obama, 38 votes McCain and 10 votes for McKinney (Green).  I expect Bay Area to break about the same.

I did not see the clouds part after I voted, maybe that occurs later in the day as Obama descends to save us.  I did hear a woman from Florida that was so happy that after election she would not have to worry about putting gas in her car or how to pay her mortgage.  Since work had a lay-off yesterday where I was spared maybe I should come around and embrace full-blown socialism in case I don't survive next one.

Other big ballot measure in California is proposition 8, a gawdy $73 million has been spent by both sides and proponents and detractors were holding up signs outside all 3 polling places I passed this morning.  Both sides have very good ads but the NO side is playing up the discrimination angle, while the YES side's best ad has Gavin Newsome's arrogant "whether you like it or not it's here" from when the city started issuing licenses.

8 years ago when a similar measure was on the ballot my Mom was visiting and I got home right after voting to find a heated argument between wife and mother on gay marriage.  When asked how I voted wife was pissed because clearly gay marriage will certainly lead to gay divorce and then two lawyers make money.  My 1st landlord was a lawyer and always found an angle to screw every tenant he ever had out of their security deposit.

But in ensuing 8 years I worked with Suzie and met her partner of 30 years Joan and my feelings toward lawyers have softened a little so I had to vote YES.

My parents certainly think I am going to Hell now.

Bodog is tonight for those that don't have 14th Birthday celebration.

Congrats Phillies

As Brad Lidge was coming into game, Tim McCarver and Joe Buck were talking about how Lidge was perfect on the season, I sent this message to Hoy:

Bayne: Was it Gary Anderson that was perfect for Vikings until he missed Game winning FG against Falcons?
Apologies for quoting without permission
Hoyazo: fuck you

After broken bat single I was sweating that I would be target in rant post but was spared.

More Bodog action on tap at 6:05

Bodog Pocket Pairs

I got dealt pocket Jacks once and pocket Kings 3 times.  Hand above was the only one of the 4 where an Ace didn't flop.  I tried to trap PokerPeaker but he cleverly escaped with a timely net disconnect.

We are now 1 week from the last Presidential election where my daughter can't vote.  The little liberal will fit in well in California.

Time to Bust a Pro

At 6:05 tonight we all have the chance to bust Eric 'Rizen' Lynch for $75 and an autographed copy of his book 'Winning Poker Tournaments One hand at a time' in an online poker tournament.

Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:05 (Pacific) the series will run with cool bonus add ons.

Each week top 3 get bonus $T, bubble is extended with 3 buyin refunds and there is end of series $3k tourney.

I managed to take a 3rd in 18 player SNG, win a supersat and took 16th in $4k.  One of these days I will dodge the 2 suckouts that take me out and get to Top 3 again.

End of Poker Content (as it were):

When I was 15 my family moved from Orlando, Florida to Westford, Massachusetts.  We moved in December and I think 1978 was one of the worst years for snow New England experienced.  OMG it was cold and there was a definite shock to my system going from running around outside playing basketball or baseball vs stuck inside shivering.  I probably gained 30 pounds that winter (which lasts until May I believe) from the drop off in activity.    Having spent most of my life to that point moving every 2 years I would adapt and make new friends but weather adjustment limited my new circle that 1st year to a couple of neighbors from bus stop, a few people on the chess team and a few people on the "Math Team" (I grew up in south, had no frckn idea what a "Math Team" was) but schools met in competition and took tests periodically.

One member of math team was a freshman girl K who ended up taking 4 classes with me over the next two years.  K was certainly one of my 1st friends in Westford but lost touch with all of them because my parents moved to Virginia my 1st quarter in college and I have stopped for gas in Westford once (on ski trip) since but have never really been back.

In a pleasant surprise K emailed me Saturday and we ended up having a long IM during lunch Monday catching up.  Conversation flowed easily but the most shocking takeaway was that she was about my daughter's age when we met.  Where did the time go?

Slumps

The Bodog Poker Tourney series starts tomorrow.
In order to play you must first register here!

I've been a little more stressed at work, the last year has been strange in that main project I have worked on is a lower priority deliverable.  I have been working on higher priority stuff in spurts but suddenly in the last week a derivative of my design is becoming a higher priority.

Sequia also was recently in the press due to opinion that this downturn is going to adversely impact valley.

My start up bankroll management has always been far superior to my poker bankroll management but I tend to run worse at poker when I think I may need the income.  In last 2 weeks I've overplayed TT a couple of times, been all in on turn only to be 2 outed a couple of times, run KK into AA 2 of the 9 times I was dealt KK and chopped the one time I ran KK into QQ.

I tried 6 max cap PLO (stacked twice calling caps on turn when they had gutters that rivered), Limit O8 (so many nut lows river counterfeited which also made straights) and people "feeling" the most ridiculous pre-flop all in calls in PLO and being rewarded:

: shows [6s 8h Ad 2d] (a full house, Sixes full of Deuces)

In PLO8 maybe you can call off all your chips pre with this beauty but don't know about PLO.

In a desperate attempt to cleanse kharma I tried online craps (bad idea) and bet on Breeders Cup for a small loss but felt good about my handicapping in that I did hit 2 exactas and had a few horses run close but have 'bad trip'.

I took family to see Beverly Hills Chihuahua in a further attempt to cleanse but when I got home managed to get FullTilt runnign about 30 seconds to late to enter Fiddy.  I did check out my email and found that an old friend from high school had sent an email. I replied "I am that Bayne S from HS and of course I remember you".  Looked at K's Facebook profile and most shocking part is she might look 10 years older than I remember whereas I look closer to the real 30 years since high school.

K would also not qualify for Don's definition of a slumpbuster but managed to cash in $14k, won an FTOPS 2 seat made a little in cash and have run pretty well in $4k this far.

Want to breakout for Bodog Blogger series and FTOPS.

I Beat the Deadline

I swore to my Father (Oxford County Republican Party Treasurer) that if UIGEA passed I was voting for the Democratic nominee in 2008 even if it was Hillary.

I had until 7 pm to register and despite the crowd at Registrars I turned in registration.

No idea how I am voting on the 30 propositions undoubtably on the ballot but will probably futilely cast a protest vote against my congressman for changing his vote on bailout bill.

I will be so pissed if I get called for jury duty.

Bodog Blogger Poker Series

The Bodog Poker Series returns Tuesday October 28th.  This fall there will be 15 tournies (Tuesdays and Thursdays) leading into the$3k final tourney prize pool.

Each tourney has added prizes and new wrinkle this year is Bodog Casino credit.  The 1st time my wife hears the dice sound effect on the computer it's gonna be big trouble but the rest of you may be able to risk it.

Online poker did not go well for me this weekend.  My only MTT cash was in DD A and that was a weak cash,  I played weaker than normal late while watching Rays defeat Sox.  Another Sunday quality play took me out, UTG raises to 3k (with TT), CO "jams" to 4500 with the mighty KTo and despite flopping 2 pair with QJo river Ace hands the pot to the donkey.

No one tell the wife but I did net a couple of hundred in online craps.  Luckily it lacks excitement of real craps so she has nothing to worry about.

Sawx in Trouble

The Red Sox are in desperate straits.  They have won 7 consecutive LCS games facing elimination but I am still not comfortable that this is same team.  I think Sox fans need to pull out all the stops.

Having read Hoy yesterday it occurred to me that maybe Hoy was wrong and it was actually the Hammer Wife who woke up the bats.  I would even put her bat awakening skillz at 3:1 greater than Hoy.

I can't quite work out the logistics of me driving kid to/from school and getting to Westchester County so I think Waffles or WWonka69 (as IT says "the sexier Wonka") need to get to Westchester County and reignite the Sox bats.  Now that I type this it is obvious that Wonka is better choice for Westchester mission and Waffles should stay home and do his thing to warm up the Sox arms.

Bad Beat

Surpassed previous effort for selecting the biggest moving stock on the biggest moving day.

I had decided options premiums were too high especially for a $9 stock so bought shares for a change.

Sadly intent was to buy 1000 not 100 but I was already late for a meeting.  If mistake had gone the other way to 10k I don't think I would have survived the stress of the weekend or my wife's wrath as Schwab would have probably called house.

I can't honestly see how a Secretary of the Treasury, who was former Goldman Sachs CEO could allow Morgan Stanley to go under leaving only his former Investment bank as last of 5 Investment Banks.

At some point I will have to examine why I am so willing to gamble with Stocks, with start-up jobs, with craps and with PLO or PLO8, but play NLHE tight.

I blame Waffles

You are The Devil

Materiality. Material Force. Material temptation; sometimes obsession

The Devil is often a great card for business success; hard work and ambition.

Perhaps the most misunderstood of all the major arcana, the Devil is not really "Satan" at all, but Pan the half-goat nature god and/or Dionysius. These are gods of pleasure and abandon, of wild behavior and unbridled desires. This is a card about ambitions; it is also synonymous with temptation and addiction. On the flip side, however, the card can be a warning to someone who is too restrained, someone who never allows themselves to get passionate or messy or wild - or ambitious. This, too, is a form of enslavement. As a person, the Devil can stand for a man of money or erotic power, aggressive, controlling, or just persuasive. This is not to say a bad man, but certainly a powerful man who is hard to resist. The important thing is to remember that any chain is freely worn. In most cases, you are enslaved only because you allow it.

What Tarot Card are You?
Take the Test to Find Out.

90th Anniversary

I was listening to the Dan Patrick Show on my way to pick up the kid from school and learned today is the 90th anniversary of the Georgia Tech vs. Cumberland football game.

Final Score was 222-0.

Best stats from the game was GT was 0-0 passing but had 978 yards on 28 attempts with 20 rushing TDs.

Hopefully after seeing this Angels fans don't feel so bad about losing 4th playoff series to Red Sox.

W00t Live poker

Sadly went out 13th (10 paid) in my Morgan Hill poker tournament.  KTo raised too much from CO,  when I jammed he was getting 3.5:2 on his money and of course hit a K to beat QQ.

I successfully put 2 people on mild tilt and one person on severe tilt levels not seen so far this year.

2nd to last hand before rebuy ended I had 6600 chips and 68s.  Blinds were 300/600 so I raised to 1600 with main purpose being to be able to do rebuy and add at break, of course got 3 callers with A rag.  After I flopped pair and flush draw on A62 flop I felt jam was required and quadrupled up when I turned 2p and rivered flush.  The A rag that rivered 2p was not pleased.

Got moved to new table, picked up AA 1st hand and because it is how I run player to immediate right had QQ and felt need to shove to my reraise. Two hands later he raised again and I reraised and this time he chose to fold.  I did not show but said I had K"kings". While he was still muttering about picking up QQ and JJ in 3 hands and losing his stack player to his right raised bigger than he should have like he didn't want action and I looked at KK for real.  When I reraised and he called showing the suited JackAce I miraculously hit a King along with the Ace on flop and he stormed to cash table muttering about my card rackery.

Post my own bust out I wandered to cash game elated to see PL O8 being played with players who would go to felt with 3rd high or 3rd low.  Cruelly Mr JackAce got stacked by yours truly.  I did not bother to raise my A23J pre-flop as 7-9 players saw the flop whether it was $2 or $7 to see flop. AJA flop was beautiful, 8 on turn got JackAce to call pot bet trapping me as he was looking at A842, 5 on river was just cruel leaving him HU with 2nd nutz/2nd nutz while I had 4 perfect to scoop.

FYI: Waffle's dream girl M was there and sat to my immediate right most of night.

Latest Prop Bet

After watching above and realized Sarah Palin created the parody run by SNL I realized what new prop bet with Waffles had to be.

Bayne: you give me 2:1 odds and I will wager Palin is not McCain's running mate by Novemeber
sirfwalgman: wow thats an interesting bet
sirfwalgman: What date is the election?
Bayne: I think it is November 4th
sirfwalgman: 25 bucks
Bayne: I put up $25 to win $50?
sirfwalgman: only 25 because I think this is a total 50/50 proposition
sirfwalgman: oh
sirfwalgman: no
sirfwalgman: you put up 12.50 to win 25 lol
Bayne: okay
Bayne: $12.50 to win $25
sirfwalgman: lol
sirfwalgman: yeah
Bayne: it's a wager
sirfwalgman: ok
sirfwalgman: I think personally
sirfwalgman: it would be too embaressing for him to do that this late
sirfwalgman: even if she is a total wreck
sirfwalgman: but I could be wrong
Bayne: I think his will to win > risk of embarassment and he wanted Lieberman for VP anyway
sirfwalgman: she went from being a HUGE asset to being a joke
sirfwalgman: the Democrats must love this

Baseball Playoff Time

Met up with LJ and Lucko for SF Giants home finale, they claimed to be in town as birthday present but coincidentally this weekend was the culmination of the Folsom Street Fair (leatherweek) NSFW.  We met up at local bar so we could watch morning football games and the historic last game at Shea (and Mets elimination from playoffs SSDY).

Good aspect of wife meeting LJ is I no longer seem obsessive about fantasy football.

Pathetically this was also 1st trip for family and I to see baseball game at AT&T park.  In my defense Red Sox don't visit.  I was disappointed that Manny took day off (what a surprise) so no opportunity to berate with my best boston accent.  Wife and daughter were troopers as neither really likes baseball but promise of taking them to The Stinking Rose kept daughter well behaved.  We will all reek of garlic for about 3 days as we went with traditional Garlic roasted in EVOO and butter with hint of anchovies appetizer.

The trip home was painful as route I am used to taking from North Beach to 101 was blocked for Folsom Street Festivities.  I was able to endure the traffic, the many leather clad people walking on the adjacent sidewalks until we passed a bear bar that was overflowing.  Daughter spotted a hairy man with large belly wearing short leather shorts and suspenders and said "Does that fat man think wearing those shorts and showing his belly think it will help him have S E X" (yes she spelled out sex).  I did not need that image in my head while driving so told daughter "Mommy will explain that to you after I am dead".  Evil daughter laughed and kept pushing my buttons but thankfully wife got her to stop tormenting me.

Edit: The car this morning had overwhelming garlic aroma and I had to drive with windows down.  I love The STinking Rose but may have to get rental next time.

Debate Night

Having opted not to vote myself and wife would vote for pro-choice Hoover over pro-life FDR we will drop daughter off at "8th Grade dance" and see a movie "Nights in Rodanthe" rather than watch alternating sound bites on talking points that passes for debate in this country.

My Grandfather lived in Nags Head, NC and his brother lived in Hateras, NC so I've been to Rodanthe.  After you stop swimming or fishing there isn't shit to do in Rodanthe.

My Take on Bailout

First a disclaimer:
I took 2 classes with Dr. Biven in 1983, one of them was pass/fail.  The thing I remember most was a skinny 6'9" basketball player (who had no handle and no jump shot) telling another basketball player "man, all I need to know about economics is how to spend my million dollar NBA contract" after getting a D on a test.  I decided after the 1986 draft that John Salley knew more about economics than I did.

Treasury Secretary Paulsen has proposed a $700 billion bailout for Wall Street on top of all the other bailouts that Hoy mentioned today. Ben Stein had mentioned that "The amount of subprime that defaulted was at most - after recovery in liquidation - about $250 billion."

Foreclosure rates are at 2% nationally and delinquency rates are at 6%. and US median price home is at ~$200k. For purposes of using round numbers we will work with 50 million as total number of mortgages in US.

$700 billion would seem to cover $14k/mortgage and would seem to be able to buy goverment ownership of 7% of every home.

If we are going socialist anyway why not try "Bubble Up Economics".

Give homeowners option to opt into program where current mortgage holders can choose to have goverment buy up to 10% of homes, in event of future foreclosure goverment gets sum invested back ahead of any recovered money to homeowner.
The 10% payment from goverment goes directly to mortgage holder and applies towards equity but a 1 time chance to refinance into fixed rate mortgage is also offered.  If there is future sale goverment gets (up to)  10% of gross.

All the bundled mortgages and derivatives become stronger which reduces the banks issues.

All of this is a bad beat for me as I sold my house in 2007 anticipating the sub-prime mortgages would drive housing prices down and I would be able to buy after the dip in San Jose area.

My preference is still no bailout as I have prepared myself for it but if there is bailout rewarding those who stupidly overextended to get house seems better than rewarding thos who stupidly created  "weapons of financial mass destruction." (Warren Buffet's name for the financial derivatives).

On financial note I bought Asta Funding which is a company that is 78% off it's 52 week high and makes it's money buying "bad debt" at a discount and recouping more than expected.  Just in case Goverment is just giving money away.

Saturday's with Pauly

Kid is on a trip with her BFF's church group to Carmel.  I may have embarrassed her since I enabled 15 day free trial of Sprint's family locator service. and little did I know they seem to send a text message to every phone when you set it up.  Can tell she has reached Carmel.

Running joke in family has been that I was going to have a GPS chip implanted in her but after we watched a "Hogan knows best" (clearly poorly titled) episode.

I registered to play Pauly's, will be tracking kid's return and may have to exit for pickup if I go deep.

Best Roach Ever

31 tokens, sitting 31st, both of us all in with the ante and dude who went out 32nd had his K9 rivered by Q7 after flopping a 9.

Sadly finished 19th in $4k when semi-bluffing wanna be Euro rivered gutshots on me twice.

Poker results did not matter so much yesterday as at 9:43 Pacific I bought October $22.50 calls for Morgan Stanley.  MS was trading at less than $18 at time.

If I had gambled same amount on September calls expiring today then I could afford MiamiDon's and Sprstoner's escort bills for a year.

Bankroll Managment when running bad

I woke up at the brink of kickoff.  Went 0 for 6 in Brawl Chippies including a beautiful loss in 3rd one where I jammed KK and was called by A3, AQ and AQ and the case Ace flopped.  This may have made me tilty enough to continue until time and bankroll ran low.

What picture below fails to capture is I had already accumulated 7 bounties in KO.  I was down to a wafflesque $2 after registering for KO.

Another important reminder:  If cell phone has features leading to greater use, (ie camera) odds of daughter losing it increase.  She managed to maintain possession 3 days, back to old phone she hates for her.

Goverment at it's finest

In August wife's doctor sent forms to DMV as requested due the 22nd.  On Sept 12 wife recieved a letter from DMV informing her effective Sept 15 her driving privelege's were suspended due to seizure condition.

Paperwork did inform that if there is no re-occurence and doctor is willing to vouch that medication will continue to prevent (as was already stated in original paperwork) suspension can be lifted. There is also a requirment that 90 days have elapsed since condition was contained.

My reaction is I am off the hook for driving my wife around this weekend!  The goverment in it's wisdom has decided that although she is "unfit to drive for medical reasons" the condition does not apply yet.

Means I should be free to play Saturday's with DrP.

An important reminder for fathers

No poker content:

If batteries lasted forever I would still have a Sprint Q-Phone.  It was a fine flip phone that could take a beating.  The Motorola Star-Tac phone I had was lost in a cab in Las Vegas and I had multiple battery packs for it as it was a very popular phone amongst a few former co-workers and I had collected battery packs when they upgraded.  My Sanyo SCP-7300 had gotten to the point where charge would only last 6 hours (powered up no calls), California made hands free a requirement for drivers and as kid's chauffeur my driving had tripled.

This is a picture of my new phone:

Obvious problem is teenage daughter has Sanyo SCP-7300 which was my wife's phone.  Wife has SCP-3100,  which is also flip phone (but with camera in pink).  Reason daughter has the old beat up phone is she had phone and purse stolen so needed to learn consequences of not being protective of stuff.

Wife and daughter were both all over my case as neither saw the need for me to have the phone with most features (I did not play the who pays the bills card) as to quote them I barely use my cell.  They have obviously overlooked amount of texting done with the serial drunk texter
I was aware there might be an issue and reason I had selected this phone had an even greater problem.  Sprint is currently running a buy 1 get 1 free special on the Rumor.  Net cost is $50 for 2 phones but the hidden land mine for me was due to newness of wife's phone the 2 for 1 special could only be applied to my number and daughter's.

I quickly gauged the situation at home and set a trap for kid, I offered to let her swap phone numbers with her mom so she could have 'pink phone' and secure agreement before wife got too hot and handed wife 2nd Rumor in green.

Daughter feels duped but still benefits with phone upgrade and failed in her effort to take green phone to school this morning.

I should have learned with the Christmas ipod incident that "cool gadgets" should be kept at parity with wife and daughter for household peace but I am a slow learner.

Other fathers need to learn from my example to avoid the stressful decisions on later streets.

Mook / Back to school night

LJ mentioned she got 300 POINTS for filling out a customer satisfaction survey on pokerstars.  The desire to fill out survey was too great so I signed on to pokerstars and no survey was offered :(  For grins I tried to play NL O8 for play chips but ban is enforced there too.

Mookie is tonight but I have to go to kid's back to school night.  I hate missing waffle's futile quest but wife likes to meet all of kid's teachers.

Running Bad

No one raised pre-flop so that didn't cost me anything.

No one bet flop, (I am not betting wrap on paired board especially when it also makes low).

That free turn card sure was costly.

I also lost a step 4 when other 3k stack with 7 left decided that 66 he raised from CO was monster when I re-raised from BB with JJ. My reraise was only to 2700 so Raise button illuminated and he might have thought 300 raise represented fold equity.  Of course 6 flopped .

I opted out another 24 hours from Stars.
But Tilt is next for this under straight flush abuse.

Sunday's on Pokerstars

Step 4:
I reraised KK, SB called off 1/3 of stack pre with 66, initial raiser called off 1/4 of stack pre with 99.
678 flop they both got all in K turn, T river.

4 WCOOP sats
33 jams I call with KK, 3 on flop, IGHN.

KJo jams I call with QQ.  Q and 2 baby flop, turn 9 river T, IGHN.

I raise pre, 55 jams, I have KK and call, 5 on river IGHN.

Near bubble of supersat to $320 ME sat A8o minraises, I jam TT, dude getting 3:2 on money calls and flops 2p, turns Aces over boat river is worthless T.  I suppose he had to call as I might make move with lesser A (it is Sunday on Stars).

$200k, I raise pre with 77, AQ calls and goes Broadway on river.

I make appropriate response.

Gawd I want play to always be that bad on Sundays.  No one seems to fold Ace rag or any pp preflop. I just want to have some hands hold up.

Targeted marketing

I blame Al.

Communication is Key

This morning I was prepared to begin chauffeur duties well ahead of schedule so opted to check email.  All of a sudden teenage daughter is screaming at my wife and wife is getting louder as well as they argue.  Apparently one of teachers was going to do a "supply check" and daughter could not find a ruler.

to paraphrase argument:
1. Daughter "I told you I needed ruler"
2. Wife "you did not"
3. Go to step 1

I believe I managed to intervene with "why don't we go to school early today" about 15 iterations into above.  I think they will make up this afternoon after school.

In car daughter was trying to convince me she told her (daughter and I both have tendency to not like to repeat self say something once and have it register).  This is made worse as wife and daughter both have tendency to forget anything that is trivial or deemed stupid.  I have found introducing profanity ("I was fucking serious about") gets around wife's trivial filter but would not be right to teach this technique to daughter.

Daughter and I stopped at grocery store on way to school and got ruler so that de-stressed her a little .  I also asked if she had reminded her mother about ruler while they were in that very store yesterday afternoon (she had not) to take some of blame from the wife.

I think they will make up this afternoon after school.

My misread of Chad's football bets has left me +$20 on year, I might as well post now as this is probably high water mark.

Your Quest is Futile

Today the troll's hopes to win Mookie prop bet should finally be crushed!

Daughter was telling me her vocabulary words for week as I chauffeuerd her home. She asked for my help in explaining the difference between empathy and sympathy. I thought my answer was outstanding, "I have sympathy for your pain as you go through your period but mommy can have empathy because she also understands what you are going through." Child's response was "you don't have sympathy either (further ranting tuned out)" Another vocabulary word for the week is democrat. Although we live in Northern California I felt the need to ask "Was republican a vocabulary word this week?" Answer as suspected was "no".

I discovered my lame check request from Bodog did not take as they "did not have address documentation". Decided I will join Chad on his Degenerate Gambler challenge during regular season.

Before the layoffs I had placed a $30 bet on the Rams to win NFC @ 30:1, and $70 on Rams to win Super Bowl @75:1. These were part of a hedge plan discussed with my sports betting sensei and I will merely require Rams to make playoffs to turn profit.

I have also followed Chad's lead this week and will win $20 each on Dallas under, Giants and Lions. I also placed a small parlay bet on all 3. I will be profitable at 2/3 correct. Bets are placed and I have most doubt about the under, Chad is correct that execution is generally poor the 1st week of season but defensive breakdowns lead to points, offensive breakdowns lead to turnovers which also lead to points.

Draft Results

Labor Day Weekend means Fantasy Football Drafts. Three are complete, two to go.

Keepers were Westbrook, Calvin Johnson and Michael Turner. It is 10 team league that starts TWO quarterbacks last year I took the approach that I would take 3 mediocre quarterbacks and shuffle them depending on matchups except for bye weeks. Last year I drafted Trent Green, Jake Delhomme and 3rd QB also injured by week 3.
This year I have 4 QBs (3 with week 7 bye doh) and too many young players. But expect team to do better regardless as last year's injuries made competing impossible.

1 other team in league has any FFL experience beyond last season. Last year team that drafted Tomlinson, Moss and Brady was tearing up league 8-2 (2 losses to moi)
he made some bogus trade week 10 where he and another team were providing 1 week loaner to cover bye weeks. I was so pissed over this I convinced him to trade Brady and RB for Hasselbeck and Bush. "Weather in New England will turn and Hasselbeck always improves 2nd half" was clincher.
I took kid to orthodontist and ended up with this roster from draft autopick of yahoo default rankings. Still anticipaye making playoffs.

MiamiDon invited me into this league last season. Got 1st pick which means Tomlinson and pray at RB. Romo being available at pick 20 forces me to deal with being a Romosexual this season. WR are decent but one of my pupu platter running backs need to emerge.

Booooooooooooooooooooooom

Waffles and LJ returned to normal form in Mookie last night. It was BEAUTIFUL from a prop bet standpoint!

1st RaisingCayne trapped waffles TWICE then LJ demonstrated all aspects of her game (suckoutistry, aggression, cardrackery) leaving a string of kills not seen since the governator in Commando on her way to victory.

Mad props to LJ for showing waffles how not to be the final loser in a tourney.

Talent

Demon daughter (nickname coined by IT) wanted to watch America's Got Talent. Seeing Derrick Barry perform in school girl outfit was a bit over the top IMHO.

Wife walked into room and commented "she sounds good and is cuter than Britney", to convey information quickly I responded "he's cuter than Britney". Demon daughter was left confused by this and a long (and amusing discussion ensued between wife and daughter).

Waffles rubs one out after watching clip is 8:5.

Poker sucked last night.

Changes

Tomorrow for the 1st time in 2 years I have to wake up at 7:00 am!!

I am sure a lot of you are not sympathetic but I have grown quite accustomed to waking up later and rolling into work at 9ish. Worst part is that my wife may grow accustomed to me dropping the kid off and want this to continue when she is allowed to drive again.

This means no more DS PLO at 0045, no more Turbo Fiddy at 0100 on a school night.

Mr Bodog seems to have given up on Bodog, that was enough for me to request a check.

My deepest run in a tourney this weekend was in a WCOOP ME sat. Top 19 got seats, 20-32 got $320, 33rd got $240. Had 3 hours of solid play sitting with 30th of 40 stacks.

I was playing a step 1 where 3 handed I call a shove from BB with AA, Sb had 50 more chips than I and A6s and rivered a flush. I reacted by shoving 11 BBs with KQo UTG + 1 in ME sat and lost to the AKo that naturally called from MP. I took the 77 limp calling a shove and cracking my KK much better 12 hands prior in ME sat because I at least had satisfaction of watching that donkey get AA cracked after limping pre a little later.

Waffles has posted a few strategic snippets from his future post "Breaking Even at Poker", this is a can't miss read,

Folding AA

Being the engineer I am I had to break down Sunday's hand a little further to examine the case for folding AA.

1st I look at actual odds of hands and see

QsQd 18 %
JdJh 16.3 %
AcKd 4.62 %
AsAh 60 %

folding means

QsQd 54%
JdJh 18%
AcKd 27%

I also looked for worse holdings to be up against and found replace AK with KK and AA drops to 54% and worst % I found was AsAh is 45% against KsKh, 5c6c, 9dTd. (Best was 93% against AKo, AKo and KK)

Telefonkiosk folds leaving him 3635 chips.

Scenarios:
1) Jorj wins (18%)
SEAT

2) bayne_s wins (54%)
Seat 2: xxxx kev (4050 in chips)
Seat 5: bayne_s (13940 in chips)
Seat 6: Telefonkiosk (3635 in chips)
Seat 8: Jorj95 (5375 in chips)

This will leave telefonkiosk as shorty, if we assume from chip counts he is 50% to outlast xxxx_kev then assign 27% SEAT.

3) TheLeeder wins, bayne_s 2nd (27 %)
Seat 2: xxxx kev (4050 in chips)
Seat 5: bayne_s (3250 in chips)
Seat 6: Telefonkiosk (3635 in chips)
Seat 8: Jorj95 (5375 in chips)
Seat 9: TheLeeder (11850 in chips)

This is ugly estimate but will for sake of math assign 33% chance of emerging in top 3 given 4th of 5 and 3 real short stacks. .33 x .27 = 9% SEAT.

4) TheLeeder wins, Jorj95 2nd (requires AKKJx board) 1%
Seat 2: xxxx kev (4050 in chips)
Seat 6: Telefonkiosk (3635 in chips)
Seat 8: Jorj95 (8425 in chips)
Seat 9: TheLeeder (11850 in chips)

If this happens almost certain seat.

Conclusion folding leads to seat 55% of time.

Telefonkiosk calls (35%)
1) Jorj or bayne_s wins or TheLeeder wins, bayne_s 2nd or Jorj95 2nd

NO SEAT

2) TheLeeder wins, Telefonkiosk 2nd, bayne_s 3rd (5%) requires KK on board
Seat 2: xxxx kev (4050 in chips)
Seat 5: bayne_s (1180 in chips)
Seat 6: Telefonkiosk (5725 in chips)
Seat 8: Jorj95 (5375 in chips)
Seat 9: TheLeeder (11850 in chips)

For purposes of estimate I am dead man Tefonkiosk 60% for seat

2% SEAT

3) Telefonkiosk wins, bayne_s wins side from Jorj (57%)
Seat 2: xxxx kev (4050 in chips)
Seat 5: bayne_s (1180 in chips)
Seat 6: Telefonkiosk (16395 in chips)
Seat 8: Jorj95 (5375 in chips)

almost certain seat

56% SEAT

3) Telefonkiosk wins, bayne_s loses side to Jorj (3%) (requires A and J no Q)
SEAT

Calling leads to Seat 61% of time.

Conclusion knowing the hands is that calling with AA is slightly better decision than folding AA.

Leading up to this hand Jorj95 is shoving a lot (which is his right as big stack), jorj having 2 random little cards inproves math for folding slightly and for calling slightly, jorj having KK improves math for folding significantly.

This would seem to be a pick your poison case and question of whether you believe you can win seat against xxxx_kev would swing decision. If I am Telefonkiosk I think decision this time is fold.

Baby Steps

I started my $W quest with an $10.50 expenditure in a $5.50 rebuy to a WCOOP 6 satellite.
I used the $W won to start playing WCOOP steps and have been taking the step 4 branch and playing the WCOOP 6 SNG that awards 3 seats and 2 $200 prizes, but on Sunday I initally opted for the 18 player PLO seat route. It just would not fill so I played a step 4 and received:

Dear bayne_s,

You finished the tournament in 1st place. You have won an admission ticket to 'WCOOP Step 5'

So I continued into step 5.

And this hand is how step 6 ended:
This may be sickest final hand stars has this year for seat (top 3 get seat):

Late Night poker winding down.

I probably only have another week of late night poker as I will be daughter's School "Bus" driver starting in week. I was busy playing 2 WCOOP Step 1s, and signed up for 0045 PLO since I saw Lee Watkinson was playing so knew it would be big turnout. When IM popped up:

LJ : no turbo fiddy?
Bayne: 10% swap?
LJ: ok
LJ: wait r u in it?
Bayne: not yet
LJ: i will not swap 10% of 0
Bayne: yet was key word
Bayne: 10% swap?
LJ: r u in?
Bayne: yes
LJ: ok

I was 3rd chip stack at break which obviously inhibits my roach game. Lost a couple of flips because blinds can't ever fold blackjack 20s and then jammed presto from CO into QQ to exit.
Thanks LJ for talking me into playing, no I was really not trying to angleshoot on swap :)

75 entrants in 0045 breaks previous high mark I've seen of 67. I doubled up early, was top 4 stack at break but with 15 left (9 paid) I assumed Dank position.

Had new omatard Piratelawyer on rail for most of tourney and he got to witness some fine suckoutistry from VanVoten. (VanVoten did show as being from Sweden so you can make whatever assumptions you want to make of play as long as you remember PROFILING IS WRONG)

400th post

A rough summary estimate:

5 posts correcting Hoy hand histories.

40 lame brags (sadly bragging about fewer than 40 tournies)

240 bad beat stories.

4 advertising posts.

10 with strategic poker ideas.

15 family stories.

60 tournament pimps.

20 links to things I found amusing.

0 chronicling my sexual exploits (MiamiDon and Waffles) should remain source for those.

I took the Event 6 exit from the Poker Stars WCOOP Steps last night. I am 2/2 cashing in Step 4 tickets for Event 6 seats. 2/12 converting Step 3 tickets to Step 4 tickets (but 7/12 at keeping step 3 tickets). My success rate gets progressively worse in Step 2s and Step 1s as play is worse but higher variance is introduced.

Edit: had to include chat from lunchtime step 1
amelhem [observer]: nice call preflop idiot
Yes it was questionable but he flopped nut flush draw and oesd with 2 overs with A8s and amelhem raised jammed AQo unimproved on flop. There is so much poker wisdom shared in chat at a Step 1 that they should be played for educational value.

While in Las Vegas I did place a $50 bet on Rams to win Super Bowl for me and $20 bet on Jets to win Super Bowl for VP (yes he is cheesehead). I will try hedging strategy that has been suggested by a known sports bettor if Rams make playoffs.

Discussion of Rams hedge did lead me to hedge a craps Fire Bet this weekend. I had made a wtf $3 Firebet and Dan had already hit 4 unique points for 25:1 payoff. Once he rolled a 4 which was 5th unique point rather than backing up passline bet with odds I did $200 "lay" of 4. I was hammered so did not get hedge correct but if he hits 4 I collect ($750-$200) vs if he misses I get $100. A $500 lay would have guaranteed $250 profit and possibly a chance to hedge 6th number.

Mookie Night

I have no idea why I entered this. No way in hell I want to play Razz FTOPS.
I am still tired from weekend and now too tilted to sleep.
The incident from this weekend's trip that will be remembered longest occurred surprisingly enough at a craps table. A Las Vegas rookie was on the trip and played craps for 1st time. 1st time he rolled he scored me 8 place bets on 8 and 7 place bets on 6. But he has read the wizard and knows that don't pass is a slightly more favorable bet than pass and chose to bet Don't Pass when it was my turn to roll. I was a bit offended and reacted by making the UT "Hook em Horns" gesture at him and teling him "Mess with the Bull, get the Horns".
My 1st roll was a 7.
He bet Don't pass again.
He heard "Mess with the Bull, get the Horns" and saw gesture again.
I rolled a 7.
He doubled his bet on Don't Pass.
He heard "Mess with the Bull, get the Horns" and saw gesture again. Strangers at table were laughing and telling him to keep making me mad.
I rolled a 7.
He bet Don't pass again and got whiny about me trying to break him when I made so much money off him.
Mess with the Bull, get the Horns" and saw gesture again.
I rolled an 11.
He switched to Pass.
Sadly I rolled a 3.
He did not bet.
I rolled a 7.
He bet pass again.
I rolled a 3.
He bet his last $3 in chips on don't pass.
Sadly I hit a bunch of numbers but failed in my quest to make the point and get last $3.
Mookie is tonight, I anticipate an early waffles exit.

Quick Pimps

I visited above site today and this story cracked me up.

My favorite weekly tournament also got a little bit better!
Thanks Pauly!

So Hungover

5 former co-workers and I went to Las Vegas for weekend.

Played Planet Hollywood's 2 pm Poker tourney. Took bottom cash when with blinds at 3k/6k UTG +1 shoved for 17k, shorty called for 2k and I called holding AQo with 20k behind and lost to KJo. From 20 players down tourney was 1 move poker and I went card dead from 14 players left on. I did manage a couple of steals but no confrontations won to accumulate chips.

I also gave Saturday Night Venetian a chance and played flawless poker IMHO. 1st three hands were reasonable pre-flop folds, 4th hand I reraised an EP raiser holding QQ. EP called my raise. Flops was Q82 rainbow and I felt compelled to call all in after I was checkraised on the flop. AQs went runner runner flush and IGHN with more time for craps.

Harrah's properties have moved to paying 6:5 on Blackjack in the low roller areas. IMHO the game is no longer blackjack, should be forced to be given a different name and tables should be avoided until 3:2 payoff is restored.

Other observation is the prostitutes seemed more aggressive this year than in past. When we walked the strip they would jump in path of our group of 6 and each time blocked the path of Dave who ironically also would have most money being currently retired after a successful start-up. Either they smell the money or go after the smaller dude to avoid risk of me trampling while not fully paying attention. I also saw casino security removing pros from gaming areas a couple of times. Lesson from that is casinos don't like gambling to be impeded.

Happy Birthday Tao of Poker

I will certainly play tonight.
I could certainly find a flight to Philadelphia and way to continue to Atlantic City if I win.
BUT
I can't conceive of being able to go as work is already being very accomodating about me having to be driver to take kid to/from school until wife's driving priveleges are restored and can't justify kid not going to school so if I get heads up I will be dumping chips.
Thanks for overlay Pauly!
Sadly driving duties will force me to miss WCOOP 16 and WCOOP 30 as well.

WCOOP

I was goofing around and entered a $5 Rebuy WCOOP sat, I don't think I lost a race during monkey hour and amassed a top 15 stack for an $11 outlay.
Sadly I look through Pokerstars WCOOP schedule and realize with it's 11:30 am and 1:30 pm Pacific start times I would have to take a day off to play a non-weekend event.
To play a weekend event I am going to need a lot of $W or to learn new games.
I would like to play:

WCOOP 16 12-Sep Fri 16:30 $215 PL Omaha [1R1A] $300,000
WCOOP 30 19-Sep Fri 16:30 $1050 PL Omaha [1R1A] $500,000
WCOOP 6 would be playable if I assume that I have cashed if I make day 2.
This would mean I have to run my $530 $W upp to $2100 $W to play 3 events I'd like.
InstantTragedy sent me an IM about new Monday Blogger Poker Tourney:
Date: Monday's starting August 4th
Time : 10 P.M. ET
Full Tilt Poker
Buy In: $10 + $1 (May change due to special events)
Format : Single Stack NLHE (May change due to special events)
PW : Boom
I am still suffering some post BBT blogger tourney burnout but may show up especially since next week is definite miss for Las Vegas.
Played my live poker tourney in Morgan Hill only to be crippled by Right Wing Owen Nolan calling off all his chips with an A rag, if only I knew how many penalty minutes he averaged I might have been comfortable calling him a donkey.

The Jason Bay Era begins

The maps for Page 2 polls are always interesting. When the question is who will win next golf tournament Tiger Woods or Field? 49 states choose Tiger, Nevada always chooses field. Today's Manny legacy poll is interesting because as big a goofball as Manny is I have to believe the Massachusett respondents got it right.

Over his career Manny averages 39 doubles, 40 HomeRuns and 130 RBIs a season. Albert Pujols has got to be the only right handed hitter more feared in majors today and he has been doing it half as long.

If wagering were available I would wager that Scott Boras orchestrated most of this in order to get paid. It will be interesting to see how much the Cubs, Mets or even Yankees shell out to add Manny to lineup next season.

It is a sad day in Red Sox nation when Manny has to go because he has quit on team.
