My BBT Guidelines

Having read The Perfect BBT Starting Table and BBT and Other Random Musings I thought I would take advantage of a maximum credibility moment to share my thoughts on how to attack the BBT.

The first thing to consider about the BBT is that cost to enter every event is $961 ($544 to date). Since I've earned just short of $576 to date I think this puts me at a whopping 33 cents/hour.
It appears the total rake for BBT will be ~$4000, leaving ~$2000 for freeroll and 1st $1000, 2nd $600 & 3rd of $400.
1st think this tells me is that I should have bet $40 with Blinders rather than $20 on the Cowboy.

This also says if you can win the BBT with zero cashes playing all events you still may net $39 plus free roll opportunity. Bottom points in Mookie last night was worth 28.8 points Bubble Boy is worth 56.6. All things considered a rather small difference points for scraping into top half vs. finishing 24 spots higher on the brink of cashing. 3rd is worth 80.1 points so the person who achieved the second goal one should have absent the points in an MTT is given 40% more points than bubble.

We have now played 25 events, finishing at the 25th percentile would net you 40 points per tourney and place you at the top of the leaderboard.

My strategy for playing the BBT events is quite simple.

1) At the start I play my normal tournament game: I am most comfortable playing tight-aggressive in early positions, looser in later positions and defending my blinds too much early in tournaments. Would prefer not to have big pots pre-flop but if I think I’m ahead then its game on.

2) As points bubble approaches I have a decision to make: a) if I don’t think I am playing well that night I may just fold to bubble if I don’t pick up premium hand, b) if I feel I am playing well despite having a short stack then goal is to accumulate chips going into bubble or c) If I have a big stack I try to wield it against those I feel are trying to get points.

3) Once points bubble passes I want to cash but I feel playing for Top 3 spots is required.

I believe I jumped from 11th in standings to top of Leaderboard in a week where I took 3rd at MATH and 1st in Mookie. Tells me that anyone currently in Top 18 can make a run with a win and a 2nd in the coming month.

Can see Hoy’s point that points system has flaws, going to a purely cashes based system would be more in line with how poker should be measured but would have impact of weighting Big Game and MATH results higher than River chasers and Mookie.

(Non-Poker related start)
I was in a Football League where commissioner had tweaked the rules to lessen the importance of running backs.
QB got 1 pt for every 50 passing yards 1 pt for every completion, -1 point for every incomplete pass and 4 points for every TD
RB got 1 pt for every 30 rushing yards, 1 point for every receiving 20 receiving yards, 1 point for every reception and 6 points for every TD
WR got 1 point for every receiving 20 receiving yards, 1 point for every reception and 6 points for every TD.
Rest of league drafted Running Backs, Warner and Manning 1st 2 rounds, I drafted Owens and Harrison. This league happened during Marvin’s 137 reception season.

League was in an uproar week 4 because I started Jamel White in a game and my opponent started Ricky Williams. Ricky had 180 yards rushing and 2 TDs for 18 pts. Jamel had 14 catches for 40 yards and got 16 points and talk of changing scoring system began. My position was we could only change scoring if we also re-did the draft as my draft was based on scoring system defined.

Point is it is always important to understand the scoring when you make decisions.

Small Pokertracker Sample

I waited until I replaced my laptop to finally purchase PokerTracker.

I suppose I should now read the PokerTracker Guide to be able to interpret what these numbers mean. Only conclusion I can reach is that variance is smiling on me.

Non-Poker Content Below:

We spent a quiet Memorial Day Weekend in San Jose. Daughter needed to do some extra credit work before school lets how so my idea of a weekend in Monterrey was nixed. As compromise we did decide to spend Sunday at Half Moon Bay. We drove the 45 miles in an hour and a half as traffic was crawling on SR 92 found a parking spot and walked to cliff overlooking Pacific and beach below. At this point wife and daughter agreed it was too cold and they would rather be at pool at home. Total time outside the car was 7 minutes.

An Omaha Hand from Last night

I was in the girlie chat talking to Smokkee earlier this week and explained why Omaha was a beautiful game to me. Smokkee does not like it because it is "too complicated" I think it is simple as long as you think of it as playing Hold'em against 48 others. There are therefore only 3 questions to answer every street:

1) Do I have the nutz?
2) Can I draw to the nutz?
3) Can my opponent have the nutz? If not can I push him off.

Other wonderful part of the game is the best starting hands have 2 suited connectors in them so as a sooted donk it provides joy.

Thought I would share strategic aspects of this hand:

I have a run of 4 of 5 cards and if I flop an Ace I have nut low also have a weak flush draw. Drawing to a 6 hi flush would me generally bad but if I am 3rd heart in hand is more postive than negative as it reduces chances of flush over flush.

pandaman [Jh 5s Qd 9d] calls $3.50

Calls with a "dangler"

etgolfnut [8h Ah 4d Jc] calls $3.50

Not one negative comment appeared in the chat box about play of hand. 20 Minutes later I called a river bet with a nut low, no high and was surprised when I did not collect half the pot.
Oops this is high only Omaha (LOL).

TheNutz and one other player kept buying in full and raising coming in to any pot. I focused on just winning the high but did play a couple of hands against short stacks where I held hands that had high opportunities but would look like I was still playing Hi/Lo to sell I should still be challenged. Humorously I kept sucking out nut flushes or straights and left the table much later up $200+. This would be 2 buy-ins for most but I generally just sit down with default buy-in while feeling out the table.

Fawking Sooted Donks

Took 26th in $18k last night with a hand I thought would amuse Smokkee and LoveElf . BB was gettting 2.2:1 on his call so I can only blame myself for tossing away some chips earlier on a steal attempt from button where I had not noticed UTG had limped.

Satellite Play Insights

Was using the girlie chat to commiserate with Smokkee about the horrendous decisions I see late in the token Frenzy and that he sees on the bubble late in SNG.

With 15 people needing to go out before the token bubble last night and blinds at 200/400 antes 50 UTG + 2 raised to 1600. It was folded around to me in BB and I had 66 and ~4500 in chips. Raiser had ~7000 behind so I figured if I shoved he would fold anything but a premium hand as with 7000 chips he had a reasonable shot at token. Much to my surprise he called with A T off and my 66 held up. He remarked in chat that he “blew my chance at token with that move”. I thought I was set up for one of my scrapes to the token but everyone else at my table folded quickly so two orbits later in SB I was sitting 23rd with 27 left (23 tokens) when it was folded around to me in the SB with A5 (sooooted). I pushed and the BB called off 2/3 of his stack with AJ off. I put a bad beat on him when a 5 hit the flop and he was moaning about his bad luck in the chat box. He later won the lowest booby prize ($9) last night while failing to recognize his biggest issue was making a call he did not have to make.

Smokkee’s complaint was at the bubble of Single table SNG there were 3 stacks of 3500-6000 and an 860 chip stack with blinds at 200/400. Smokkee being Smokkee pushed from SB with A5 and BB called with TT. UTG was the short stack. The detail I don’t remember from the hand was how many more chips the BB had more than Smokkee. Since bubble to 3rd pays same as 2nd to 1st I might have made same call against Smokkee especially if it would have left me with more chips than shorty.

Thought that occurred to me is that I want to specifically color code my notes for players that don’t seem to adjust their play for the bubble. Have been fortunate to win 8 tokens in last two weeks and I know I have missed some of the Token Frenzies as well but think I can improve my win rate if I identify enough players that are ignorant about endgame play so I don’t make a move against them.

Played like a Donkey in Math last night when it got locked in my head that Gary had JJ or QQ and failed to lay down my AA post flop. I was sure Gary being as tight as he is had not cold called a raise with A9.

Soooted Donks rule

Was of course devoting my Saturday Poker Play on PokerStars hoping to hit the lottery that is 10 Billionth hand celebration. It of course was hit at a $2 Max buy in table and Justine0003 took it down with the Lucko (83 suited). Implied pot odds of course justify ATC when effective pot is $100,000.

Weak Play as BBT leader

My 1st BBT event as leader was weak. I had AA twice early where I only collected blinds, I never got a chance to accumulate chips with a big pot and after weakly folding into points lost a coinflip to Smokkee. I haven't figured out how to verify this with Pokertracker but I am pretty sure it would show Smokkee with big pocket pair is less than 50% to win against me with ATC so don't know how I missed river wheel with AT when he had KK.

Riverchaser's also saw me squeek into points only to go out as a big dog when I raised the Hoy (AJ) from SB after 4 limpers only to get re-raised by Zeem? with AK. Of course if it had been against Hoy I would have been stacking the chips after hand but AJ is not as kind to me but is brutal against me.

I have had a couple of more trademark scrapes to the $75 token. Was UTG able to call BB if I chose but could not raise when token bubble burst Weds and Thues went out 29th (29 tokens) when I had ~1.5 BBs left UTG+3 when bubble burst.

On the positive side my visit to Vegas during Blogger gathering is now enabled. Signed the Grant Deed and other papers selling the House too far away from work to live in. Better news is I net out $12k more than offer accepted in January where sale fell through. Sucked when it fell through in March but now it seems great.

1. I have a 5 inch piece of steel in my left arm. Initial break occurred when I was the smallest of 3 people involved with a tackle during a Rugby game. Steel was added when a 2nd Orthopedic Surgeon decided to operate and found that the bone had spun ~60 degrees. I only set off airport metal detectors 30% of time.

2. Impact of number #1 on golf game can be spectacular. I have hit a 400 yard drive on the Plantation Course at Kapalua, had a ball clear the 325 yard sign on range at Ben Sutton golf school. Only time my left hand ever goes “palm up” is on golf swing follow through and side effect of either moving in manner it rarely does or a nerve crossing one of the screw heads my left arm has been known to go numb during downswing after spectacular pain. Amazingly only twice has club gone flying because somehow right hand tightens up while left lets go. My worse golf drive went off my left ankle, ricochet past Steve W. left side hit the cart and hit Steve W. in the back of the leg. He was a little pissed but did think it was strange that I was shaking my arm and not concerned about my ankle. At this point Steve P. rather than teeing off pointed out that “I was away”

3. I was in Navy ROTC program during college. On my summer “cruise” I pulled duty as boatswains mate and was aft lookout on Helicopter pad after midnight as Destroyer passed through a hurricane. I was supposed to be wearing a harness that was connected to one of the tees in the deck. Ship did a 40 degree roll on one of the swells and I went tumbling towards the edge but managed to grab the rail of the hangar door and slammed into door. Something big slid by and I then scrambled inside. Minutes later I learned that it was an 1800 pound reel of cable that went sliding by and it had taken the harness with it. I opted out of ROTC scholarship before the next summer.

4. I am father of now 12 year old daughter. Until she was 4 I was her favorite. When she was 6 she grabbed me by my shirt collar pulled my head to side so she was looking me in the eye as she said “Dad, I don’t like you”. I never felt lower.

5. I share a birthday with my sister who is 6 years younger. A couple of years I did not even get a piece of cake on my birthday because I was in ocean late into evening or playing baseball. My wife thinks this is why I am bad about sharing.

6. Before I got married I scheduled a vasectomy, 2 days before procedure was scheduled I canceled but did not tell anyone other than wife (then fiancé). I slept in morning of “procedure” and managed to pull a muscle in groin region getting out of Pathfinder that morning so limped around office and moved slow all day. Year later a co-worker (Bill) asked me about procedure and I passed on what I had learned as if I had been through it. Wife and I decided to have a baby early the next year and we found out on March 31 she was pregnant. Next day (a Friday) I told my group’s administrative assistant that wife was pregnant but hadn’t told anyone else and was only trusting her with this secret. She was tortured all day trying to figure out if this was an April Fool’s prank or not and I told no one else until Monday April 4. Bill gave me less grief than I expected.

7. I have fallen from a 7 foot high rock and landed head 1st on a 2nd large rock. It was during lunch break of whitewater raft trip on the Gauley in West Virginia and everyone who saw the fall is amazed that I did not break my neck. I did have a scrape on my head and another on knee and lower back was sore. My lack of neck came in handy that day.

I can only assume after I have been tagged by kajagugu that the outer reaches of the blogishere have been reached and there is no one left to tag.

Rue the Day Jordan

The 3rd place finish in the MATH certainly puts me on top of the BBT leaderboard (rue the day Jordan) but I still am a little disappointed. Had half the chips in play when we got to 3 handed and grew impatient trying to steal with a suited connector and being unfortunate enough to hit a 4 flush on a flop with a K. Astin had already shown a propensity for not laying down blackjack hands and I chased a flush on turn. Left myself as the shortstack and went out 3rd.

Had played well early and managed to trap Hoy for a nice chunk of his chips when I called his late position raise from SB with QQ and managed to flop top set, haven't figured out his exact holding but managed to collect quite a few of his chips when a 4 on turn paired board. Managed to have WilWonka and Smokkee push into me when I held AA but probably got caught stealing 1/2 of my attempts.

My real and virtual worlds collided when a friend from my live poker game interjected a critique of Hoy's play. In Pencilgeeks live tournament I always get eliminated with a bad beat so he has observed far less fonkery from me than Hoy has.

Making matter's worse I was the bubble boyin tournament pencilgeek talked me into playing when my AA2Q was outflopped by an AKJ9 and AKQJ.

Monday pimpin

My chances look good to be the 1st to qualify for the BBT freeroll as the Cowboy and I are tied at 17 entries apiece with the cashless jec one back at 16 entries.

With three tournaments this week plus holding a Tier II token for MiamiDon's Big Game I will certainly get to 20 entries this week.

Tournament: Mondays at the Hoy (MATH)
When: Monday. 10pm ET
Buyin: $24+2
Password: hammer

Tournament: The Mookie
When: Wednesday. 10pm ET
Buyin: $10+1
Password: vegas1

Tournament: Riverchasers Online Tour #10
When: Thursday, May 17th, 21:00pm ET
Game: NLHEBuyin: $10+1
Password: riverchasers

Having won a MATH title, a Mookie title and a Dookie title I will now set my sights on cashing in Riverchasers. The earlier start time can be problematic for a Left Coaster like myself but my continued quest to make Jordan rue the day he bypassed me as a Top 4 pick has driven me to play every event. This week may not be my Riverchaser’s week as I am in FTOPS #7 at same time.

Will continue to work to reward AlCan'tHang and PokerWolf for their wisdom.

Daily Double Donkfest

For the 1st time I managed to cash in both the A & B portions of the Daily Double. Previous attempts have fallen short because my flopped sets will get busted by flush draws. Sad thing is most times I am forced to call an all-in or fold with the flopped set and not even offered opportunity to allow free turn.

Last night managed to make 2nd break in both tournaments when I found myself a minor stack in A and 1/2 up leaderboard in B.

Tournament endgame strategy has to be impacted for the following reasons:
1) Bottom money in each tourney is ~$15 for $12 entry but 3% is split amongst those cashing in both which is generally $40.

2) Generally after money bubble bursts all hell breaks loose amongst the short stacks. 2nd goal after making money is to make Final table. Final table in each tourney is worth $150, best combined tourney performance is worth 2% or ~$600 but Final tabling both is $6000.

Impact of this in my opinion is that you would want to create a utility to track who is alive in both tournies and be a little more selective about confrontations.

3) Final table bubble play brings looking at 1st prize of ~$2000 in each but final table in both has $6000 return. Winning both brings sick $18000. Think in this case since entry was $24 you have to weakly avoid big confrontations to the double FT.

I of course did not give these any thought until I busted from A with mediocre hand soon after
money bubble burst.

I went out 13th and tourney awarded 7 seats

Got to the final table with huge chip lead until I managed to bluff off my lead to sellthekids when my straight draw and flush draw missed. Then in my attempts to eliminate Don Morris, I instead doubled him up twice when my Ace x would not hold up against K J.

Three handed play was ungodly tight until I chose to change gears on this hand:

Got to heads up play with huge lead, donked it away then regrouped or frustrated riggstad until he called my AT shove with KT and the dominated hand lost. I think being a West Coast blogger has it’s advantages during the latter stages.

Live Poker

I played in the Cadillac Poker Tournament Saturday Night. It’s a re-buy format ($50) and includes an excellent Tri-tip dinner after 3rd level. At times play resembles Kat’s donkament, record buy-in has been $750, my personal record is $200, but double buy in initially and add-on seems like bare minimum to compete.

1st key hand of night occurred just before dinner break (also end of re-buy period), sitting with 6200 in chips and 300/600 blinds I min-raised UTG+1 in dark with K J off. Purpose of raise was to get to 5000 chips so I could do re-buy and add-on to have 20k when elimination play began. Apparently in this game a min-raise is a “V” raise, my defense was “how can any raise in dark truly show a lack of cajones?” Raise did not get a lot of respect so it was a family pot (6 callers) and I proceeded to see a flop of Q T 9 rainbow. UTG bet 4k, I raised to 5k (after finally looking at cards) and there were 4 to the turn. They held QJ, JT and KT and 3 turn and 2 on river secured a monster pot.

2nd key hand I was in CO with 78 Suited, which I limped with after 3 other limps. Flop was 5 4 2 rainbow.

UTG bet 1500 into the 4800 pot and I called. Pot odds did not justify call as I read him for having A3 but he still had 50k behind, I had 30k behind and he had acquired the chips calling a fpot size flop bet, a nearly pot size turn bet and a pot size river bet (during rebuy period) with a pair of 5s 6 kicker with a QT954 board and 3 of a suit. My thinking was if I caught a 6 I would double up as he was not laying down a straight. 6 came on turn, he bet 3k and I raised to 12k , and he called. River was a 2 and he pushed, I had to call based on my read and he indeed had A3. UTG was a little pissed complained for a couple of hands about my flop bet call and tournament director happened to move me to another table 2 hands after beat.

3rd key hand was at final table, Ten were at Final Table but only Top 7 paid, I was short stack and with blinds at 4 & 8 with 1k ante, big stack was 2 to my right and raising a lot, 2nd stack was immediate left, After 7 hands with someone in front of me raising I finally heard 4 folds with only 24k left in front of me. I pushed knowing BB was a defender who would be looking at calling 16k into a 46k pot. I only had J6 and he picked up J4 and called me. A beautiful 6 flopped giving me some chips to work with.

Four people busted before 4th key hand. I had built up to 68k chips and was on button.
UTG raised to 30k and I pushed 68k with AA, he called with KQ suited. Flop was T 5 2 but turn 9 and river J sent me home.

1st cash in tourney was nice, paid for a couple of months play and won money in cash game.

Donkarama

I think my early play in Donkarama was too tight. Only saw 20% of flops but won 55% of hands when I saw flop. Only showdown I lost was when MeanHappyGuy pushed all in for like the 12th time and I had AQ (suited) his Q8 suited hit the flush and I lost a showdown.

Late in tourney did finally pick up AA once and KK twice but only won the blinds. Went really dry 4 handed with lots of double-down hands when I picked up AQ (suited) in SB I ignored warning bells about IronGirl's unusual bet and pushed into her QQ. This was not how I wanted to be dominated.

Nice work seeding the table MeanHappyGuy, next week will work better I'm sure.

Rio sent me my invitation to return to World Series of Poker this summer. Conversation went like this:

Wife: "What did Rio send?"
Bayne: "My invitation to World Series of Poker"
Wife: "You have used up your vacation time already so don't even think about it"
Bayne: "Went over my schedule with boss on board and it's only a conflict if I make Day 5 of Main Event"
Wife: "You did not"
Bayne: "Boss said if you qualify for Main Event this year wife will make you take cash"
Wife: "How much can you win in one of these early events?"
Bayne: "1st in a prelim may be few $100k"
Wife: (while looking at brochure) "Since we are selling house and you won't have to make mortgage payment if you want to play in a $1500 event go ahead"
Bayne: stunned silence
Wife: "But make sure it fits work schedule"
Bayne: stunned silence

Had one home sale fall through already but this buyer seems to be more credit worthy.

Wednesday Night Wisdoms

1) Drinking + Poker + Bad Beats = Major Tilt.

RecessRampage sucked out on turn against me in Mookie, should have laid hand down cheap rather than getting involved in big pot with bottom 2 pair.

Lost my 1st buy-in playing PL Omaha High when I called a EP raiser when I held KKQJ (doublesuited) flop was a very nice KT9 with gutshot straight flush draw. Sadly EP raiser had AAT9 with same flush draw and sucked out on River. I guess I could have check called flop rather than check raising but this seemed like an excellent double up flop to me.

The 2nd and 3rd buyins were lost when I aggressively pushed big draws into set. Both times I was 55-60 % to win but behind.

Final act of futility was going out 10th in 45 Man SNG because in battle of blinds I saw flop free with 4h2c and it came Kh5h3s, SB minbet and I raised 2x min, he called, turn was 7s and he min bet and I raised again. Turn was Qh, he checked I pushed (which at this point was 4 BBs) and he called with a J7 off.

Poker bankroll has plummeted to depths not seen in months but I am already registered for RiverChasers and have 2 peeps. The rakeback refresh will be coming soon anyway.

This does seem trivial as I have entered escrow with a new buyer for the house and this one seems to have 10% cash downpayment and pre-approval from a lender I have heard of previously.

Tuesday Night Discoveries

Reminder:

Tournament: The Mookie
When: Wednesday. 10pm ET
Buyin: $10+1
Password: vegas1

I am at mercy of PG & E restoring gas service in early part of appointment time window but good luck all.

Got knocked out of $75 token frenzy with KK, seems wrong to fold them pre-flop. At least this time I ran them into AA. Picked KK up 3 times at cash tables and they held up each time. Only once did Ace hit flop but it came with a beautiful K and 4 which allowed be to stack the A 4 that called 3x BB raise.

As a short term experiment played cash NLHE and PL Omaha Hi at same time. Theory was that I would be more leery of big hands in the Hold'em window and a little more aggressive in Omaha window.

Side effect seemed to be that on those rare occaisons I picked up flush + oesd I was far more willing to check raise the draw. An EP raiser (with AQ off) was victim when I was 4th caller from BB with 4d5d, flop was beautiful Qd6d3c and my check, raise, call push was rewarded with 7s turn and 2h river. It is so much easier in a cash game to push any draws that are favorites but behind,

Fawking Kings (Part 5)

Busted out of Math ~35th last night when KK failed me at showdown. UTG RecessRampage raised pot and it was folded around to me in BB. I re-raised pot (why type when you can click) he pushes I call and Ace drops on turn hitting his AK. At least I did not lose to AJ. I think looking back over the last week only time I have held KK and won a showdown was against LoveElf in the Mookie last Wednesday.

One of these days I will actually use pokertracker to document how poorly I fare with KK.

On positive side I did get an offer on my house from a buyer able to put 10% down, who already has loan approval. If I am not paying rent and a mortgage this month I may get to go to WPBT in June.
