A rough week ends

The downside of blogging without anonymity is that I have avoided writing about some things that bother me that I would not generally want publicly revealed. My parents are both from the south so I come from an upbringing that keeps things private and leads to flawed decisions to avoid emabarassing family.

1st event of week was CEO at my company was replaced. The new CEO came from inside so he is known quantity, I like and respect both CEOs just hate the change. But do have to figure out what does this mean?

2nd events of week was learning there was family drama amongst 3 cousins. Dad was always tightest with this sister so naturally I spent more time with them. Oldest of 3 may have cancer and is awaiting diagnosis, middle 2nd ex-husband was just paroled (Megan's law forces him to register whereabouts) and youngest still lives with his Mom despite being my age. Some of aunt's money is un-accounted for an attempt was made to have youngest involuntarily committed to mental hospital and a suicide attempt was faked (or real) all to deflect from money disappearance. I may have to get the DVR fixed so I can watch for them on Jerry Springer next week.

3rd I did get email saying my registration for WSOP 19 has been received. I am committed but have run poorly in PLO tourneys for 2 weeks. :(

4th - BBT 3 is winding down, Cash in 2nd Big Game means I am near break even for series but have not gotten TOC seat. Been a lot of spots where I was starting to get traction but lost a flip but there hasn't been that one tourney where I really felt I got in position to take it down. This week in Mookie felt my reads were on but it did not matter as I never picked up cards or had fold equity at final table. I laid down JJ one of the times Astin raised AA in front of me but that was only pp at final table.

Las Vegas is 9 days away though.

Double Cash

In the greatest (to date) of my many public humiliations I blew a 10:1 chiplead to BuddyDank in the Dookie to take 2nd.

In the Mookie I did manage to collect bounty on host by flopping nut straight with AQ against his AK and collected a bounty on JD Schellnutt placed by Evil Wonka. I went out 6th when I lost a flip because I don't race as well as eventual champion TuscaloosaJohn nor do I catch AA 3 times at a final table like Astin.

2 shots left at TOC beginning with Riverchasers.

A Day of Big Hands

Ran QQ into AK early in Bodog and never recovered.

In Skillz:
My AA took out LJ's AK.
My AA took out Lucko's TT.
My AK ran into a shorties AA.
As shorty I tried to steal blinds with ATs and SB had KK, this was real bad as SB calling raise playing that tight knew I was in trouble but continuing with 4 BB as BB did not seem fun either.

I saw FullTilt now has Super Turbo SNG with 300 starting chips for cash, I went 0/3 in the $7 flavor. Play was bad (as expected). Had one of my better bankroll managment days as I opted to not play cash, played only a few SNGs while sorting out emails from my extended family. Jerry Springer Show's have contained similar sagas but my favorite cousin botched a suicide attempt. I am getting filtered news from 3000 miles away so it's hard to know what to believe but current consensus is it was not a serious attempt.

Brief political interlude:
I liked Thomas Friedman's column today, but I live in the granola state and drive a Prius. Have no idea if Goverment is capable of conducting serious energy policy no matter who is in Oval Office and the NIMBYs mess up most energy plans locally.

Mookie is tonight, maybe I will get bounty and collect.

Political not Poker

Responding to a question from the Sioux Falls Argus Leader editorial board about calls for her to drop out of the race, Hillary Clinton said: "My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. You know I just, I don't understand it," she said, dismissing the idea of abandoning the race.
Clinton said she didn't understand why, given this history, some Democrats were calling for her to quit.

To paraphrase: If someone would shoot Obama I could win nomination

Friday's Dilemmas

The 1st dilemma:

Thursday night I met up with some former co-workers at an Irish Pub to watch the Celtics-Pistons Game. I may have drank too much Guinness, teenage daughter gave me some crap when I returned home but dilemma is did I set a bad example by drinking too much or did I set a good example by leaving my car at work and taking the Trolley home?

The 2nd Dilemma:
How many outs do I have? Names changed comments left in place.

A2xx where Ace is suited so I can't really fault my preflop limp.
Flop could have had 1, 2 or 3 hearts for me to have hit it harder but all things considered this is not a bad flop.

Looking at my hand I have:
4 outs to a nut-nut hand
4 outs to a nut high hand with no low
10 additional outs to a nut low without a high.

I can understand that calling pot size bet is questionable as 31 % of time I hit oesd for high getting 2:1 if this was high only, we are playing O8 and 50% of time I hit nut low (without nut high).

Turn is bad in that I missed, but turn is good in that it puts 4 suits on board eliminating flush and board has not paired preventing boats. Only Conceivable hand that has reduced my outs is KKQJ. I am still looking at 25% for nut low and 10% for nut-nut and 10% for 9 hi straight.

Raising turn is pointless, no one can fold now and even after river no one can fold to bet after I hit.

A tourney centric night

For the 1st time that I can remember I played no cash tables on Wednesday.
Katidude put me out of Dookie when AAxx 1 suit was no match for her 6689 (I think) that called my jam. Astin may have priced her in calling a reraise with TTsomething.

Mookie I some how lost with jackAce to Smokkee's QQ, the KQ who called allin took the main pot teaching Smokkee a lesson that QQ is a walk or fold hand.

I omaroached in $4k to somewhere in the 30s but rankings nemesis Athletic punished my AKJ9 ds with an AAK9.

DDA had another non descript run past 70% of field but failed to cash, I think I am 0 for A side of doubles this year. B side I did okay.

In the interest of avoiding MiamiDon's sword I cannot relay my exit.

Riverchasers is tonight.

Contrary to popular belief I have a social life so will miss.

Avatars and Poker Decisions

Julius Goat created a new blog. His table image post and an ad inquiry from ArtPoker led me to answer of how I could have Final Table image at any point in tourney and change avatars. Goat immediately saw possibilities in chat and a new blog was born:

Donkavatars.

In Bodog I was doing fine last night until Riggs shoved, I called with QQ (because casinos reserve bets with 10%+ edges to small bonus bets) and lost to his AK despite the Q hi flop.

I was short and recovered to starting stack but then jammed 88 over KK.

I was dreading the minefield that is NL O8 but I built up a nice stack after Hoyazo overplayed 2 pair (with no draw) only to spew off on flopped 3rd flush (with oesf draw), I committed to my read that Mattazuma's c-bet on flop was weak and he did not have flush. Millerd who had yet to act had nut flush and I missed all 6 of my river outs after turning 2p.

Then made my best decision of night powering down computer to go to bed before 10 and my worst decision of night and said something that pissed off hormonal daughter and caught elbow to ribs.

Blogger Weekend

Limit O8 Skillz tonight at 6:30 should be my last best shot but being able to cash in Stars $215 buyin O8 and FTOPS O8 in the past means nothing when faced with the quality hands you can run into in a blogger O8 event and the flair for suckoutistry exhibited.

Edit: Strike that it's NL O8, suckoutistry shiould be spectacular.

After careful consideration I have worked out my June Vegas Itinerary

June 7 - Win something in TOC (only two problems with plan so far)
June 8 - Arrive in Las Vegas check in to Bally's

June 10 Wire transfer and form sent I am committed.

Bust out, buy MiamiDon a birthday drink, hopefully belated.

June 14 Fly home

June 15 Celebrate Father's Day with child (she would prefer I stay in Las Vegas as long as she got to go out with her mother).

I run so bad

MiamiDon has his 2 FTOPS sunday bubbles, but I am now 2 for 2 being eliminated in FullTilt HU blogger tournies where I started off match at chip deficit. Back in the Headsup Dookie, they started a new match as soon as 2 people were available so by the time I got through 1st match OOSSUUU had managed to accumulate 12k chips to my piddly 3k.
Loretta may not have imagined that a poker site embarking on head's up tournaments could still screw them up put apparently restarting the chips each round is too complicated for Tilt's crack team so power of 2 entrants is forced on public tournies.
MATH is tonight, will see if still running bad on FullTilt

Thought the tournament number for the million dollar Turbo Takedown was cool. I did find it funny that points tournaments confuse PokerStars form email and 1 penny equals 1 point.
Direct buy in to the tournament is 5000 points, don't know the cash equivalent but entrants is capped at 12k, 2001-4000 gets paid $90 and 1st is $100k.

The Breakfast Club

My daughter has been tardy an excessive number of times and gets to serve a Saturday detention. My wife did not think daughter would appreciate me renting The Breakfast Club tomorrow night instead of going to see Narnia.

I final tabled the Riverchasers but kept getting crushed in O8 when AA24 ds type hands would see QJT flops with 3 cards of 2 other suits. It was just made worse when I would see pots taken down by hands like KT92 (all 1 suit) raise pre and take down 1/2 the pot.

I played quite a few FTOPS #19 Sats and FTOPS #23 Sats because CMitch had done a fine analysis of the value proposition when you also took rakeback/bonus clearing into account.
What I failed to take into account is evening before the leaders in sat challenge are in final leg of competition so I end up with Green Giant 1, UGGs and SeniorGarza at my table. I think the value proposition changes when they have already won 74 seats between them.

I thought I would hightlight the worst played hand of day:

Table Image

I had a brief chat with Julius Goat about Table Image principle he outlined in Stupid System I had discovered a way to get the Final Table image all tournament but Goat suggested using a different Avatar, I thought happy Andy Black would give me a greater serenity as I played.
I exited turbo Fifty pretty early.
Holding Ts9s on a QsJs3d flop I had bet pot against preflop raiser, he jammed and I called not expecting to be 9:1 favorite, sadly still lost, putting the serenity to test.

Since Bonedaddy has retired feature

Left the Bodog Blogger tournament when I forgot NewinNov never folds a big pocket pair preflop and lost a race to his 33.

I spewed a few chips in a Limit O8 hand against Donkette when I flopped a nutflush draw, and overwrap but failed to hit any of my 21 outs. Then I had this fantastic display of poker occur.

I should have folded that hand since I know Recess plays mid connectors but he had 3-bet pre with AT againgst swimmom with Astin still to act so thought he was playing more aggro this evening.

Played the turbo Fiddy but exited when after EP minraise, I jammed UTG +4, JJ in CO overcalled and button called that action with QJo. My set o Kings was no match for his rivered Broadway.

I did figure out a way to improve table image after reading Stupid System:

Mallet and Swan Neck

I had the pleasure of visiting a hand specialist surgeon today.

The exact injury I suffered in December was Mallet and Swan Neck s/p dislocation and volar plate injury as well as a compression fracture. From explanation of the mechanics there are 4 tendons/ligaments that control finger movement and I managed to tear 3 while also breaking the bone. He could not recall a more severe "self-inflicted" injury. Self-inflicted in this case is that I applied all the force leading to injury in a movement rather than crash or fall or catching a Brett Favre pass.

1st joint is hyperexteded 18 degrees, 2nd joint dips 21 degrees and the compression fracture means pinky is still angled outward 13 degrees. The two joints are also really stiff from being in a splint so long so I have hourly exercises I must do as apparently you have 6 months to regain motion or he may operate.

Dr. drew nice picture of what he would do to fix via surgery where he would trim down my stretched volar plate, and drill a hole in proximal phalanx and bring the flexor tendon through hole "to a button" that would hold it in place as bone healed around tendon to act as "2nd volar plate.

I have incentive and clearance to do exercises.

Bodog is at 6:05 Pacific.
Skills at 6:30

I laid a bad beat on waffles leading to his MATH Gigli last night.

He chose to play 63s from MP early last night. My 77 crushed him when I hit one of my 12 outs on river. I had forgotten how much joy I get from waffles blowing up IM like he is only person to ever suffer bad beats, especially since he is usually the one 2 outing me and he has said "6 outs that's a lot" when he actually 4 outs me. (other straight draw would have been boat)

Hope Everyone had a Happy Mother's Day

When you have an only child she realizes that without her presence wife would not be celebrating Mother's Day so it is really about daughter.

Wife wanted to see IronMan, daughter was not in favor of this more, she is not a boy, she is not into adventure, she was slow getting ready, we arrived at theatre 5 minutes after it was scheduled (luckily caught 1 preview then movie started), and kid wanted movie junk food and had not brought her own money. Daughter enjoyed movie but would never admit it.

All through dinner and when we were watching Survivor daughter was really giving me crap. Wife kept reminding me she is 13 and her hormones are in flux. Daughter finally let us know she was pissed at me because "He had called me something that sounds like witch, but begins with his 1st initial", my defense is I did not, wife reminded daughter that she had called her a bitch not Daddy. My non-favorite status is cemented because she accepts wife said it but my being annoying caused her to act bitchy.

Will close with MTT Sat strategy question:

A Saturday Discovery

$12 +$.5 EF for 2 $55 seats in sat, seems like FullTilt is only really clearing $2.50 on each of these. But kudos for bringing super turbos to the smaller bankrolls.

Woot Weekend

A local story that is so California:

"The Contra Costa County Health Department is closing East Bay Waldorf School in El Sobrante on Friday because of a whooping cough outbreak." When wife and I heard this on news last night we were thinking "wtf, our kid got immunized for this, how can this outbreak happen?" I am pretty sure in Montgomery County Maryland we needed prove that kid was immunized against this and many other diseases to go to school. Today in follow up story heard the Waldorf School does not require such shots because "it disrupts the child's destiny and/or kharma"

A small Korean woman kicked my ass this morning. She managed to get 55 degrees of motion out of 2nd joint of my pinkie and I was only getting 10 degrees last week. I felt more pain today than when I dislocated joint.

Riverchasers had another disappointing exit:

Holding KcJh in BB after UTG limp I decided seeing a flop seemed like good plan.
Flop was QhTh9s,
SB holding 8h6h (learned later) fired out a pot sized bet, I decided to just call as I wanted to see UTG call as well but he folded.
A black baby card fell on turn and SB checked, I jammed because I gave you free card to hit draw you missed now go away and I guess SB counted his outs and reached 15 and called.
Sadly he hit one of his 8 true outs and rivered his flush.

Make no mistake I love that there are myopic players that count outs without any consideration that it is called the "idiot end pf straight" for a reason. I just wish they would hit their reduced outs less often.

Political Post

I love reading Michael Dobbs of Washington Post (and did lift picture). I think Bill realizes he won't be getting hold of any more interns in White House.

Tuesday blahs

While Lucko was busy winning $25k and $35k I was busy getting pipped in tournies.

Bodog exit started when oossuuu defended his BB with K6, I had raised from CO with AT and flop was A K 6, after my C-bet put half his stack in I was committed.

I exited Skills when my 8754 lost to Swimmom's 8753. Could have let it go but Swim's board told me she was on an 8 but I bricked 7th.

I played $23k KO only to go out with JJ against QQ on 7 high flop, I should have let it go but decided opponent had AK.

$4k exit saw me flop a pair + wrap + flush draw against overpair + gut. Another missed draw but I like decision

LJ talked me into playing the turbo fiddy and I managed to go out 10 from money when I reraised QQ from BB into KK.

Only reasonable conclusion is poker sucks.

I am sure the Mookie will suck at 7 Pacific.

What is Going on Here

Don't Miss Tuesday's May 6th Bodog Poker Blogger Tournament!
Start Time 9:05 pm ET.

Or FullTilt Skillz Series Razz.

1st a small work interlude:
I've been banging my head at work for the past two weeks to get a board to boot. I have 4 prototype boards and they all have been showing the same problem. Out of frustration I let a manufacturing dude use my lab bench Friday. Today when I resumed battle with boards all 4 mysteriously worked. Manufacturing dude says he did not touch board but just borrowed power supply and emulator pod (I wasn't using pod).

2nd a small medical interlude:
Had my 1st Physical Therapy Appointment for my Pinky (in future this will be referred to as Pinky Therapy) I have a new splint to wear to keep top joint straight, some other contraption to prevent hyperextending 2nd joint and a 2nd splint while doing my hourly pinky exercises. Annoying thing is my Dr. scheduled an appointment to consult with a surgeon next week, this is not good for poker mindset.

3rd a small political interlude:
Gas tax holiday of 18 cents/gallon this summer would save me and wife ~$14 this summer, unless I drive to Las Vegas in June then it gets me up to almost $20. I would think waiving the tax on diesel fuel would gopefully see some savings in food prices and save us more.

Back to Poker:
I ran like crap all weekend!
Worst beat was in Sunday's $2.5 KO. After ep raise an 5 callers, I re-raised AsAcQsQc ds to 690. Since it was 3rd hand of KO I of course got 3 callers committing 1/4 of starting stacks. Flop was a beautiful QhJs4s. I bet pot and get raised for pittance more and there is another caller.
Raiser has JJTs8s, other caller has AKQJ. I am still praying no T when 7s hits turn and then 9s hits river. Letting 2nd set escape with a straight flush. I can understand 2nd set + gut + rag flush draw committing all his chips post flop, pre-flop he was 1st caller of re-raise so I think he has to giver some thought to fold pre.

For the most part weekend could be described as slow bleed of folding terrible starting cards or missing flops with good drawing hands.

I did try to represent hitting flop a few times but had a knack for bluffing into calling stations with 3rd nutz.
