Happy New Years

2010 was a pretty good year:

On job front, I have job that I like.

On Dad front as Demon Child has been consistently doing better in school, is healthy and happy.

On husband front wife is driving and back to pre-seizure form.

On health front I would rate year as a positive as although I received diabetes diagnosis it was caught early, it seems treatable and I already feel better after losing a few pounds.

Poker was a loser for the year but it is recreation

I have given careful consideration to what I want to do for resolutions. I thought about setting a goal for running (5k, 10k or half marathon) or to ski with family this year. Realized I have used my weight as an excuse to not do a lot of things and it has caused most of health problems so this year there will be just one resolution on the list.

1. I will lose 52 pounds in 2011.

Not a resolution but I will collect bet from waffles when he does not net $10k in poker winnings.

Adding for Scott (but as an anti-homage to F-Train):

Back Home

The New Year's crowd started arriving in Lake Tahoe Tuesday. Average age in town dropped. Price to play in casino rose. It also started to snow, trip up in dry conditions 5 hours. Trip back with chain controls was 8 hours.

Temp in Tahoe when we were there was probably low 30s during day so returning to 43 degree Santa Clara does feel brutal, but lows in single digits next few days tell me we ran real well with weather.

Demon child had her ski lesson on the sunniest day which also saw 8 inches of fresh powder fall the night before. She got her confidence back with no falls (2 falls previous trip caused her to quit skiing after single run). She was excited and chatty about her lesson after and at dinner, wife enjoyed her day on the trails on snow shoes. They were both exhausted and turned in early.

I played a little call and chase poker in Harvey's poker room, I have no idea what kind of bet it must take to get take down a pot pre-flop as I saw people calling off stacks with 33-77 and QJs, I did not get many hands but did manage to be 5th caller to UTG raiser holding 99, 954 flop with 2 hearts got a lot of actionand took down a pot with top set against 2 flush chasers and 1 oesd when river 4 of hearts gave me boat to crush the two non-nut flushes.

I went up to room only to discover that wife a daughter were sleeping loudly, after hour of effort to sleep I gave up and got dressed and found craps table. It was amusing table as there were 3 young guys at my end of table who all rolled well but shared same quirk. None of them would take pass line odds when point was 4 or 10, Jason who was to my immediate left would also not bet odds on 5 or 9, he would bet full odds on 6 or 8. During roll where Ryan hit fire bet I asked dealer if I could place an odds bet for dealers behind Jason's pass bet 3rd time Ryan rolled for a 5. The other two youngsters were amused, dealers were more than happy but Jason thought that was too emasculating and finally placed odds bet (won 2 rolls later). Soon after my wife tracked me down, demon had told her "don't worry about daddy he is night owl". Since I had lot of green chips in front of me and it was obviously a fun table wife stuck around for a cup of hot tea, listened to Jason complain that I strong armed into betting more than he wanted and finally failed to cooler a craps table immediately. When dice came to me next I did pass and insist she wanted to pass as well and we let 3 young guys roll and wife and I headed back to room.

Last night in Tahoe I was forced to drop wife to 2nd worst shooter in rankings. A short asian woman standing 2 spots from stick managed to hit boxman with dice on 1st roll, had 3 rolls off table end and then managed to make boxman dodge another dice. Pit Boss had seen enough and issued warning "next roll on table or dice pass", she managed to roll craps or elven a few times making her dad some money on his horn bets before finally establishing point then out.

I set up X-Box and Kinect upon return and watched demon spend 30 minutes customizing her avatar to get it just right, it seemed so star trek next generation to wave hand to control things.

Christmas Day Craps

We opened presents like a normal family. Daughter made snow angels on the beach. We ate together. But wife and I played 3 card poker and craps while demon watched a movie.

Wife was just going to watch until Kate on the stick talked her into it. I put $5 on the "Pass" for her and $10 on the "Don't pass" for me and said to Kate remember this was your idea. More to warn other players at table not to bet heavy.

Wife shook the dice furiously and fired, only one of the two dice that hit Kate hit the felt. 2nd roll scattered dealer money on far end but established point of eight.

3rd roll hit Kate and player next to stick but also left table.

4th roll was 7 and her turn ended with no one seriously injured.

I will now have to move Recess down in rankings to 2nd worst shooter.

Merry Christmas (A counterpoint)

My little brother Mike is in the center. He is 6 inches shorter than me and was less than 120 pounds when he graduated from high school but has since ballooned up to 200 pounds. His similarities to Waffles are astounding most of the year , but he lives for Christmas. He does grow a beard every year and dyes it to accentuate the white and is a very much in demand Santa.

Obviously he does it for the attention.

Soon the Christmas season will sadly end and he will get less attention.

Demon child always gets giddy at Christmas and I gain my joy through her excitement. I worry that this will be the last year that she is giddy but each year she rallies. Last year was Disney this year will be in Tahoe so I will probably be offline for a week.

Happy Holidays
(fuck the PC it is commercial rather than religous holiday anymore)

Merry Christmas

Happy New Year

In Vegas Aftermath

After collecting my prize money I got myself a much needed sandwich. Terrible side effect of diagnosis is I eat less per meal but should eat a little more often and was starting to feel a little light headed.

Drizz (deliverer of 1st major final table wound) and I talked briefly, he still had a financial analysis paper to get done and asked me if I thought Don would deal. I told him I didn't think he would because he really wanted trophy and big influx into his bankroll now that he was back.

Drizz rushed back to table while I finished my sandwich where I learned that it was over and they had given Don 2nd place money, trophy and rest had split prize fund.

7 handed I would have probably agreed to those terms but I had 1 BB the only hand that was played 7 handed.

Headed back to IP at this point to meet Pauly and Iggy with Don and his celebration. Saawx Lover and StB and I decided life was too short to sit around IP Sports Bar listening to bad karaoke when I made my worst misplay of the weekend. StB had a nice roll and I failed to fully invest in the dip. His last roll I had $200 on the 4 but that was due to my nitty play of increasing bets. After the 7th 4 should have had $800, I also failed to leave until after a few shitty shooters (myself included).

I then joined Lightning for a very late inexpensive dinner and Josie came along. Although I lost the coinflip and had to pay I meal was cheaper than any of Garth's meals thanks to Lightbulb's senior discount.

There was some level of disbelief from them that I called Buddy from BB with 52o but holding 4 BBs, don't think it is right to fold to 1.5 BB raise. Especially at a level where antes were 1.33 BBs.

Did give Buddy a good sweat when I flopped a gutshot and turned a pair but Buddy rivered a higher pair. I still see that nasty 8 flipping over in my sleep.

We then moved onto other subjects:
1) Yes Demon Child knows that is her nickname.
2) Really she takes pride in it
3) Not publishable
4) Family stuff
5) Travels

I then headed back to Harrahs where an old Cowboy watching 2 young guys arguing with dealer about payoff summed up my recent feelings about craps best "$3, they are arguing about $3,
It is the pissants that ruin a good craps table"

I will humbly admit that I will never be able to say pissant so it carries the disdain that a Texan can say it!

Sunday at Legasse's Stadium was good and I made an impulsively large bet on Patriots but left money on table by doing it as moneyline bet after listening to Pauly's insights.

Wish I had gone on to IP for late game but Southwest waited until 70 minutes before scheduled flight to let me know it was going to be 2 hours late.

Countdown to next gathering 358 days

2010 WPBT in the books.

Thanks PokerStars for running the Luckbox Last Longer Challenge again!

Recess let me know Tuesday night that he would have to back out of joining Gnome and I in defending title. Last year Recess had filled in once Schaubs bailed last year and despite being informed of snark potential he did not change his mind.

Fate decided Thursday at IP Pai Gow table that Garth would sit to my right and was looking for a team. If I had known at time that Garth's blog had become Top Chef foodie blog rather than poker blog I may have made arrangements to join for dinner rather than on team.

A historic Pai Gow hand occurred when my 98 defeated dealers 97 and my J6542 defeated the dealer's J6532, sadly I would later lose to a J9 Pai Gow with a J875432 which I set poorly. New Pai Gow theory once best low hand is 87 it is time to play 32 and pray for the high.

Douchebag Harrahs Caesar's Entertainment hit a new low while Brad, Speaker, G-Rob and I were playing $15 Blackjack at only 3:2 Blackjack table in IP. Pit Boss came over and changed sign to $25 table but did inform us that we were grandfathered in until the end of the next 6 deck shoe.

Early in next shoe 1st base got a black jack and dealer paid him 6:5. We had failed to notice that Blackjack payout now read 6:5 and dealer said payouts were not grandfathered in prompting immediate cashout from the 4 of us. To new other pit boss credit the payout was changed to 3:2 but what the fuck does that say about IP that obviously from dealer reaction this is not the 1st time that IP has made what I feel is fundamental change to the game with limited notice.

Friday I talked to a few bloggers in MGM poker room and was tempted to sit into $1/$2 game until Brad mentioned he was still stuck with ~$1300 in chips in front of him. I made the worse EV move of going to MGM craps table. There was a dude that I saw sign for 2 $5k markers who would do nothing for long periods of time then bet $2k-$4k on Don't Pass. I was amused at first as 1st time I rolled I hit so many numbers he decided to pull the bet off and make it a place bet which he collected, then he waited for next shooter. Unfortunately his douchebag son would come up to table occasionally and shout "SEVEN" when a bet was down. Table would thin out and I would move to different table only to have this dude walk up later.

I went by poker room on craps tilt and could not find any bloggers so wandered North to blow off craps steam. When I got to Paris I decided to give craps another chance. Overall had a good run and saw something I had never previously seen at a craps table.

A dude who walked up to a $15 table bought in for $100 disrupting a decent run using 10x$1, 6x$5, 2x$10 and 2x$20 that had to be spread out for count. Shooter crapped out 2nd roll later.

Stick shoved the dice to same dude who immediately grabbed 3 dice and rolled. Dealers and Boxmen looked stunned but stick smoothly shoved back two of the dice and said "The point is 16 sir"

Saturday I had a nice leisurely walk to Aria had a bagel not really feeling on my game for poker.

Tournament started and I got dealt hammer in 1st BB. The addition of the Hammer Challenge led me to try to defend for the $50 prize snapped me into more focused play and also may have led to Alan calling me down when I flopped then showed down the mortal nutz two hands later, 887 flop Alan was torn on whether I had pocket 7s or was trying to win a 2nd hammer and failed to fold KK (if he had read my blog previously he would have known KK is a shit hand in tournies). It has been a while since I played live poker so sadly my hand was a bit trembly when my 87 sooooooooooted had gotten a pretty good flop.

I won a few hands early with 87s but really did not pick up a premium hand at my 1st table but had chipped up with a few steals and some connecting on flops.

I moved upstairs to 2nd table where I could check on Garth and Gnome at adjacent tables and watched Poison deliver some brutal beats accumulating a menagerie of bounties and a mountain of chips. The AJ > AQ after AQ flop sent Mattazuma searching for gnad ice. With ~45 left BuddyDank mentioned to me that team Dank and team Roach were only intact teams left. Soon after a relatively short Numbono shoved on my BB and I called thinking my KQ was sooted. I was honestly shocked to learn that they were both just black but happy when I cracked his A rag.

At this point Recess received a text "Team Roach last intact team"

I heard Joanada busted next and checked quickly on Garth and Gnome. Gnome had previously been around 6k but had closer to 100k as we broke, I was around 30k and Garth was still healthy at 18k which was a little above average at time.

Garth busted about 40th and took his fanboy self over to Craftsteak for a Kobe beef feast while Gnome and I ground forward. CJ came by and mentioned to Poison that Gnome or I had to go for her team to have a chance at the Last Longer so I could not raise her monstrous stack nor armada of bounties off a hand, but did accumulate a few chips against shorties jamming my blinds.

Have no idea who the bust out was that prompted CJ to come over and congratulate Gnome and I on our repeat last longer. We did quickly agree Garth should have trophy. Soon after MiamiDon did make comment that Gnome and I would play soft against each other sadly I may have made a strategic mistake by informing him we had already been paid.

I also remember little from the ~ 3 levels it took to get from 12 to 11 to finally 9.
The dynamic of 4 teams still being in contention for 2nd and 3rd brought roaching to new heights at other table as well as staggering number of shortie river saves.

Final table brought an unfortunate A-rag loss to Drizz' JJ, Buddy's A-rag rivering me after I made a 4:1 call and Dawn 4 flushing me out on river when she was a must call BB.

Lessons learned from tourney are I like Aria poker room and although many thought wine bottle was cool bounty, not everyone likes red wine.

Grats to Miami Don for making field I left behind say 'no mas' and declare him winner.

Waffles sent me a link to poster above, I think he wanted to plant an idea in some random bloggers minds.

Recess Rampage has bailed on Team Roach so Gnome and I are looking for a 3rd to collect easy money with us in tourney.

Gnome arrives in Las Vegas 1st so will be point of contact to join.

My 1st KK fold pre-flop

Steeler's saved me or screwed me over as Troy Polamalu forced fumble when sacking Flacco I looked away and did not see I was dealt KK. I had a little time on timer when I noticed so attempted raise. But apparently my reflexes have slowed introducing a 2nd definition for a "Lightning Fold".

Married a long time

Took wife and demon child out to Plumed Horse for 17th anniversary.

Assistant manager at apartment complex made suggestion and it was across street from La Fondue which LJ had suggested previously.

We splurged and went with the chef's tasting menu for all of us. I was the only one that included the wine pairing.

Ahi Tuna Tartare
Tsar Nicoulai caviar, quail egg, brioche toast
NV Domaine chandon "Etloile" Rose, Napa- Sonoma

Black Pepper & Parmesan Souffle
Uni & Dungeness crab fondue
2008 South Coast Winery "GVR" Temecula, California

Seared Artisan Foie Gras
spicy molasses peanuts, Asian pear & vanilla gastrique
2007 Schloss-Shonborn "Nusbrunnen" Kabinett Riesling, Rheingau

Lobster Risotto with White Truffles
This was an add on course to normal tasting menu, I think white truffles retail for same price as cocaine.

Alaskan Black Cod
duck confit, Matsutaki mushroom, watercress
1998 Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Rene LeClerc, France

Mishima Ranch Kobe Beef
braised rutabaga, oxtail croquette
2006 Ridge "Santa Cruz Mountain" Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot

Point Reyes Blue Cheese
pear mostarda, "graham cracker"
2007 Inniskillin Cabernet France "IceWine", Niagara Peninsula

Valrhona Chocolate Souffle
Conrado Farms fig creme anglaise
1977 Dow's Vintage Port, Portugal

Dinner took 3 hours and was quite tasty but to be honest I would not say no to a sandwich right now.

My takeaways from evening:

Daughter is high maintenance her response to her mothers suggestion she not go after truffles, caviar or Foie Gras in future was "If he doesn't have enough money for bill he can do dishes and I'll call Daddy for ride home", thankfully she thought rather than having me pay to bail date out of dishes "It is up to his daddy to get him out of dishwashing".

Wife's driving is rusty, some of our acceleration/braking sequences at lights was jarring. I need to either drink more or less.

WTF did this meal do to my blood glucose??? Should wait 25 minutes to take a reading.

John Gruden is a Genius

During Monday Night Football as they were speculating about a team with worse record than 2008 Chargers winning NFC West Gruden said Commissioner should step in and change the rules if a 7-9 (or worse) team won the West.

Tampa goes 10-7 (4-0) against West shouldn't they go to playoffs instead of NFC West Winner.

Jaws thought one of the NFC West teams would get hot and get to 8-8 making issue moot.

I would not want my neighbors to know I think Jaws is right, 7 teams in NFC have 2 more wins than current NFC West leader, denying one the playoffs okay but 2 absurd.

Marking time

Las Vegas is still 3 weeks away.

My project manager at work is just relentless about pushing to get things done sooner so latest date for my board to be delivered to Cisco is December 9th instead of the December 15th date I was working towards this morning.

I have not checked to see if they have planned to deliver my board to Harrahs instead.

Poker front I just grind cheap Rush PLO enough to keep my "IronMan" status active. I am probably annoying people as I have found I prefer rat holing over building up a big stack only to get runnered after I get all in on flop or jammed by a flush draw with 1 to come.

Movember front I am 10 days into effort. Currently moustache is half red and half gray.

Diabetes front had to go for a blood test today, have to wait until Friday for results. I am sure I have not had a meal where I really blew out the carb budget. Belief is I have not exceeded the carbs limit in a meal but if I have it is on order of one serving. I guess the numbers will give an indication if I am correct.

I had better weekend than Cowboys

We threw Demon Child a small "Sweet 16" party this weekend at Left Bank. Wife was manic the last week as she completed planning and preparation. Demon had involvement in selecting menu but was not aware of many of the details, the carefully prepared table centerpieces (Tall candy jars with Eiffel Tower Chocolate lollipops), the balloons, that a few of the apartment neighbors were invited. Demon's BFF showed up but 2 other friends ended up bailing on her. Sunday noon-ish, day of fall back parties may not be the best idea. Demon did tell her Mom it was "best birthday ever" so overall a success.

Saturday to help wife prepare I had to take Demon to Los Gatos for her "teen facial", I so love sitting around in a spa on a Saturday. Afterwards we went to local Wells Fargo to deposit a birthday check from the grandparents.

We learned Demon is too old to continue to have her current savings account (with no fees). Demon now has a new savings account and checking account. This week she receives her ATM/Debit card in the mail.

Kid is downright giddy about this. After I got over my initial shock I decided it was a good thing.

Demon can make deposits and check balance at ATM but can't make withdrawals. She can use for point of sale transactions and I got to set a limit on transactions and she can not overdraft.

Wife thinks I overdid it with the limit as I went for $100 rather than $20 that bank person said was standard starting point. Problem was if kid wants to shop for clothes $20 is useless and I don't want a call to approve a bigger purchase. $50 bills are bad luck so I went for the $100. I think kid has deep pockets and short arms so it will be interesting Christmas season to see what happens to her savings.

Poker wise I have just been grinding Rush PLO cash. Yesterday after the party I was watching early football on DVR and playing some $25 Rush. I flopped trips out of the blinds twice against AA where I quickly checked flop. I turned 4 of a kind and led out turn and got 2 callers and managed to get stack in on river against AA tard twice. I think key was I was paying so much attention to football that flop check was quick. Other key of course is people overplay AA in PLO all the time.

Demon's final present arrives today. #65 49er's jersey. She does know it is coming and it was her that selected the number.

It was interesting NFL day, Wade Phillips got to coach 2nd half of Cowboy's game, Childress is still a coach. I am a little disappointed Buc's lost to Falcons because they never ran a play for Freeman on after they got in Red Zone in 4th. Leading 6 4th quarter comeback victories in 16 NFL starts I would have thought he has ball in his hand once? Post game press conferences he always looks like he is teenager being forced to wear a suit but he may have that knack for "clutch". Bucs could easily be 1-7 instead of 5-3 with their low payroll, youth and 14 rookies on roster. I think it is good that I am a little disappointed, expectations are rising.

A sad Day in Football

Defending Champion Georgia Tech was dominating Virginia Tech.
The on 3rd down in field goal range Josh Nesbitt tried to squeeze a ball into coverage and broke his right arm trying to make the tackle ending his season.

I think he finishes his career at #3 on my all time favorite Georgia Tech QBs list:

1 Sean Jones
2. Joe Hamilton
3. Josh Nesbitt
4. Scott (never actually dressed but was manager on team that was told he was emergency 3rd string QB for a game my freshmen year after 5? other QBs were injured.
LAST Reggie Ball

It will be interesting to see how Johnson's offense works with another QB. Nesbitt was especially gifted at option for a QB even more so considering he was a spread offense QB in high school.

GT's 2nd string QB just looked awkward running ball last night.

Thank God she has no interest in driving.

A quick duggles ripoff

Get out and Vote

I will now also offer my guide to how to vote:

1) Vote against bond issues - If they need something done figure out how to pay for it rather than agreeing to pay a lot more later without knowing how.

2) If in doubt vote NO on propositions. I do vote YES at times but for the most part propositions tie the hands of elected officials and California is already screwed over by past propositions.

3) If you are happy with how a part of government is doing re-elect the incumbent, otherwise vote them out.

Demon child's school is doing well despite limited money/student School Board is re-elected.

State Assembly - you are out

Brown, Whitman, Carly and Boxer - I am sick of your commercials, I decided to vote based on which one of you last showed a positive message about what you planned to do rather than a negative ad about your opponent. I am mainly pleased you will stop clogging the airwaves as I doubt whichever candidates win will do jack shit.

So Typical

A weekend of rare events

This weekend Demon Child (who turns 16 this week) and I dropped my wife off to shop and went to the gym together. After she finished Smoothie to carbo load for her workout she visited me by the Nautilus machines and was impressed by the amount of weight I had dialed the machine too.

I don't remember last time kid showed that she was impressed by anything.

She then went to her favorite Trainer to burn off calories from smoothie. After I got done with a string of Nautilus machines I tried the AMT next to demon, I don't know how adaptive the trainer is to my motion as I always feel like I am on the verge of being thrown off.

Sunday a greater rarity happened. In Super Turbo KO someone folded to a reraise. I can produce hand history if required. It was 30/60 blinds and EP raised to 180 and I looking at KK chose to jam for ~700 rather than folding the hand of death. Much to my surprise EP with >2k behind folded.

In the not so rare category Waffles lost to Josie to move to break even in their NFL pix bet.

Neither one saw fit to publish their pathetic score.

Tuesday, October 26, 2010

I can follow the graph and know I left house to catch trolley at 8, trolley ride lasted around 6 minutes then a short walk to office arriving at 9. I can also see when I left cube to go to lab or next building for lunch and what time I walked home for my bigger exercise burst at end of day.

What I can't tell is precise time I tilted Josie, what I am sure of is waffles gets no bar food so he is drinking on an empty stomach.

Monday Observations

Waffles would win a bet with Josie (don't know if it is just drinks or more is involved) if Giants win tonight. I would have previously thought that I should bet everything I have on Cowboys tonight, but I am still trying to wrap my head around how did we not have the Vikings win last night setting up the tie scenario which was biggest loss scenario in waffle's world.

Grats to LJ for another big score.

On poker front I played enough PLO cash two tabling to collect $25 bonus the last 10 days but did not play much more than required.

My newly diagnosed diabetes has shifted my focus away from poker.

Fortunately the apartment has a decent gym for me to do back, chest and arms exercise as I am trying to lift each day to get my muscles to remove more glucose from my bloodstream. Each weekend I have been going to my local 24 Hour Fitness to work my legs. I overdid it a bit as going upstairs is painful and traveling downstairs is brutal.

Family had a nice dinner at the Chakos last night. It was enjoyable watching game with a Favre fan and a Packer fan and also good test to see if I could adhere to my new carbohydrate restrictions.

I am not sure how well Las Vegas will work if I can't consume Sam Adams (18g/12 oz), Miller Lite and Michelob Ultra just don't appeal to me. At least bourbon has no carbs so I may be able to adjust but in all likelihood if I seem passed out at WPBT someone should get me an apple juice or an orange juice.

Congrats to Populous

Populous is the architectural firm that designed the New Yankee Stadium. They did a magnificent job in designing for a speedy exit as the fair weather fans leave each ALCS game bitterly disappointed.

Bravo.

Poker Play is still very light but could not pass up Full Tilts Take 2 promotion. 5 points/day multi-tabling (2 counts) takes no time even at .1/.25 seems trivial. Crossed the $5 threshold now need 4 more days for the next $20.

Work is consuming a lot of time, apparently at new job getting "ping" through the system is huge. It does mean data path is working so we are 1 step close to bringing poker, facebook and porn to the masses at higher bandwidth.

106 left, 90 paid, I think calling button jam from small blind with TT is correct move.

I would promise to post results of hand tomorrow after everyone has a chance to comment.

But after 30 minutes I still had not connected so went to bed.

Bruins Victory

Demon Child's Homecoming was tonight. The "mighty" Santa Clara Bruins and Monte Vista Matadors put on a delay of offensive ineptitude for 3 quarters that was painful to watch. The only time either team moved the ball was the Matadors completed a long pass when one WR had ball bounce off his hands but another Matador wide receiver caught the ball ~3 yards away. I don't recall saying many plays designed that put 2 WR that close together 30 yards downfield.

Trailing 3-0 Santa Clara put together a decent touch down drive and on their next possession drove down to 1st and down at 6. After gaining 2 yards on 3 plays coach decided to go for it on 4th down with 4 minutes left. Can't imagine what thinking was the kicker had put extra point dead center early in 4th.

Monte Vista had a nice 90 yard drive but stalled in final minutes preventing a crushed demon child and preserving a Santa Clara victory.

New Prioities

I recently read that Lightning is going to get healthier.

If an old man like lightbulb can start exercising I can too, especially since I get more temperate weather.

Now I just need wife to not sabotage by being all whiny when I won't give her a ride to doctor's office for blood test because I want to walk to trolley stop. I did offer to walk with her to office before work as it is only about quarter mile from my usual trolley stop at 2nd stop.

If she really wanted to take car she should have gotten made a 2nd attempt to pass written driving test.

Poker play should drop off as I sacrifice it to exercise, but I am getting tired of having gut shot draws shove on flop and get there against me anyways.

My High School Reunion

Between Dad working at IBM and then changing jobs every few years I went to 3 elementary Schools, 2 Jr High Schools and 2 High Schools, lived in North Carolina, Maryland, Florida and Massachusetts during that span.

Westford Academy Class of 1980 is holding it's 30th Reunion this weekend.

I only spent 2.5 years there and spent 1st 5 months adjusting to the cold as moving from Orlando in Dec 1977 to enjoy some of the biggest snowfalls Massachusetts had seen in February 1978 did not prompt me to go outside. Eventually I did start playing Hockey on local pond but I had no skates (nor ability to skate) which limited me to playing goalie. My only other activities were the Chess Team and the 'Math Team' so I only really met a few people because I was still bummed to have moved away from another set of friends.

Late in my Sophmore year Mom told me that they would not be able to afford to send me to college. I started to work there the beginning of summer and through most of Jr. year, worked at a gas station 4-11 Friday, 8-8 Saturday and 8 until closing Sunday in an effort to save money on my own for college. I did get to know a few more people but not many and I was always too nasty to go directly out on Saturday and was really too tired after getting cleaned up at home.

Sr year I decided to try to get ROTC scholarship so went on Scarsdale diet (dropping 40 lbs) which I had gained since leaving Florida. I decided to apply to Georgia Tech (because Uncle Jerry went there and application was free), I was accepted couple of weeks after I mailed application so I only ended up applying to a few other schools as Georgia Tech out of state was cheaper than U Mass in state. January of Sr year Dad changed jobs and was working in Virginia and coming to Mass ~every 2 weeks. Knowing I would soon be moving away again and going to school even further away I wasn't anti-social but was pretty sure I would not be seeing most of my classmates any time soon.

It is really strange to me that I am as saddened as I am that I am not going to reunion. When I reflect back on it there were maybe 20 people in my graduating class and another 10 from other years that I spent any time with. I have a bad habit of starting a new job a few months before milestone reunions so I have little vacation time and board I designed is not quite functioning well enough for me to take the days off required to fly cross country.

There are a few people I would like to see again and a few that I honestly know more from Facebook than my time in Westford that I would like to see.

I am wasting another opportunity to connect with people who have something in common.

Hopefully I'll make the next one.

Cousin Hugh

My Uncle Bobby got married for the 2nd time this past weekend. He is only 9 years older than me as my Mom was oldest of 4 children with Bobby being the youngest and probably a surprise late addition.

Bobby's 1st marriage lasted ~25 years but I didn't meet 1st wife until couple of years before divorce because he never told anyone in family that he was married (nor did we know his address)

Dysfunctional is a word I understand too well.

Bobby did have a son from 1st marriage who my sister and Mom met for the 1st time this weekend.

My Mom sent me a picture attached to an email:

"There are two pictures in the batch that are your cousin, Hugh. He is 29 years old. Jackie is the bride's name. I thought I had Jessica and Angela and Cyndi in one picture, but it came up blank.

Mom"

Make me wonder a little about my Mom's computer savvy, but Hugh did wear a nice pair of boots to his dad's wedding.

Week 1 wrap up

My conclusions from the weekend:

1.) Georgia Tech has to get better on defense if they want winning record this year.
2.) Being able to complete a few passes would also be helpful.
3.) James Madison just did a number on Boise State making BCS Championship.
4.) NY Jets and Dallas Cowboys can cancel previously announced Super Bowl parades.
5.) AFC West and NFC West are still worst 2 divisions.
6.) Red Zone Channel still a godsend when local stations have shitty games.
7.) Week 1 had a lot of shitty games.

Most importantly Calvin Johnson caught that ball, Detroit was robbed.

I am in 4 fantasy football leagues and have Calvin in the 2 priciest ones.
Hoy made a good point, I ended up watching a shitty Redskins-Cowboys game, a less adept Jets Ravens battle and Chiefs-Chargers which main redeemable feature was watching KC rookie kick returners all as I sweated out fantasy results.

4-0 finish is nice but now I have to look for replacement QBs for one squad.

Monday

I started Monday pretty excited.

Got to watch the news and hear that Paris Hilton got busted for possession of cocaine because while dude driving was stopped she reached into purse and accidentally spilled vial of cocaine into plain sight of officer. All because she needed lip balm. Question I have is: "If it wasn't your purse Paris then why the fuck were you reaching for lip balm?"

I got to go to my 1st Business Unit meeting as an employee, it is sort of nice to see why they are pushing so many projects through engineering at once from a how they feel it fits in network vision.

Wife was kind enough to call frantically right at the tail end of the meeting, I intentionally did not cancel health insurance policy yet as I wanted to make sure I had the Anthem/Blue Cross proof of coverage before I backdated cancelled Kaiser and moved on the the employer coverage provided by Cisco. One lesson learned from working for a Canadian company is they don't know shit about US Health Insurance differences, and apparently think bills can be paid with apologies when they forget to pay vacation or reimburse for individual health insurance.

My 1st fantasy football draft is about to start, I woke up this morning in a 10 team league and now I have the 12th pick.

Hoy claims to run bad but he'd be hard pressed to top that!

Small Ball Poker

I recently noticed that I have not had to use my FullTilt points on tourney entries to replenish bankroll and had creeped up to quantity to get ipod (Nano 8G).

I also observed a few time periods of double points for rush poker as well as 'late night' double points 8-10 Pacific.

After careful consideration I think I prefer 8G ipod Touch at 45k points over 16G ipod Nano at 41k points.

Since Friday night I have gotten in 5k hands of rush PLO, cranked out 6k points once you factor in bonus and probably rarned $150 in rake back. Now I have to figure out a few things.
1) Am I better off buying ipod from local Crapple store with rakeback cash?
2) How many value bets am I missing on river to have the disparity I have in showdown winnings vs. pots w/o showdon?
3) Is real problem calling too much pre-flop or after turn ith speculative hands?

Other financial matter to figure out is Cisco's 401k provider allows me to set different contribution percentage for bonus vs. salary.

Would I rather set % same for both or set salary % to 5% to collect matching 4.5% and bonus contribution to 35-70% to hit yearly ceiling as they seem to provide information on what bonus gross will be a month before payout?

1st Week Draws to close

I am happier at my new job than this guy.

My thinking when I left Petaluma in 2006 was that:
1) I was going to work as an engineer until I retired.
2) When I gave up on start-ups I would work at Cisco or Google.

With start of 1st college football season without Bobby Bowden on sidelines I am reminded that I think it was Bear, JoePa or Bowden that said there is only one milestone left in life after retirement.

I sort of feel I am down to two milestones left.

"Jimmy you are such an asshole"

I had a 10:00 wake up call but woke up at 6:30 this morning. Dude sharing room next door with Jimmy was not pleased that he could not get into room because Jimmy had thrown the brass lock.
10 minutes of escalating frustration door banging and profanity. I looked through peephole first and saw he had 2 girls in official Vegas uniform (little black dress) and at that point was not sure if Jimmy was passed out or seen the friend whose personality could not have been good enough to compensate. I am getting old and decided rather than confront to just call the front desk to get someone sent up to help these clowns.

Sunday night I played 'Rapid Craps' at Bill's Gambling Saloon.
14 chairs playing online craps except the dice and roll are traditional.
Casino advantage is that only took one guy to run a craps table has he has stick to pass dice and enters roll into his screen and he takes chips to enter starting amount and pays you out in chips at end. New craps players can figure out betting on their own time.
Player advantage is no clowns get their hands in to interfere with dice and it was $3 table where $3.60 place on 6/8 paid $4.20 but flow was neither rapid nor generated excitement.

Overall trip was awesome as Paul was rolling 4s and 9s at a way more than expected pace and I managed to cash big time as he went on a 6 4s in 7 rolls tear at Hard Rock when I also managed to start with $25 on 4.

Never did see or hear Jimmy he might not be the asshole.

It's not you it's me

I am 'changing' jobs but not cubes.

I have no idea if design services firm end game plan was me consulting at Cisco when they hired me. But I have now set a new record for shortest job tenure at 11 months. Since 3.5 months were mile down the street and last 7 months were in Cisco building I don't think it will reflect badly on resume. I just got returned to my old working environment and did well enough that Cisco and I decided to split up the money that used to go through two middlemen.

Old CEO is taking it quite personally that I am leaving but I am guessing people don't change jobs as easily in Ottawa as happens in Bay Area. My favorite line from meeting where he made counter offer was "If you had asked for money I would have given you raise", this is same CEO that called me at 5:30 am on an April Saturday morning and asked "Are you busy? Dave isn't here yet to take me to airport". I was still groggy so did not really have time to generate good response before I was interrupted due to Dave's arrival wherever CEO was.

I discussed counter offer with wife enough to get help with explaining situation to CEO. Her first suggestion was "we can still be friends", I countered with "It's not you it's me". She had already approved my letter of resignation as being good for not burning bridges, my direct boss Dave took it rather well, especially considering he takes a commission hit when I leave as well. But he knows the health insurance jerk around we have been dealing with the last 4 months has pissed me off and there was always a risk putting me back in work environment that I had been comfortable in for 20 years.

I now have 4 job departures in under 18 months on the resume, only other time I left a job voluntarily I was there 13 years. My average is really looking bad, but I think this latest stint is easily explainable and want to keep this job a while.

I do head to Las Vegas Thursday with some old co-workers but I am left wondering HTF did we end up going during a Star Trek convention. Would not have known except my cousin lamented not going on her facebook status.

Garden City Live Poker

$3/$6 Limit can have only 2 possible outcomes:

1) Slowly bleeding money as house takes $5 rake out of any pot with flop.
2) Hemorrhaging money in few hands as one of 6 people calling pre-flop capped action rivers his non-Ace high, non paint high flush.

It was amusingly bad but you have to hit hands early and get up before rake chews you up. My peak was ahead $75 after my turned boat held up against rivered flush that 2 people chased.

Ethics in investing

Having read BP was hopeful that cap being placed earlier today would be able to contain oil and it being options expiration week I decided to make a small "investment" that they would be successful and stock would pop this week.

Strike price being $38 and cost being 68 cents it seemed like they will jump to $40 if cap is success and at 33% break even prop.

Real question is when will Congress pass UISEC if this shit is legal and online poker is not?

My bankroll management rules are much stricter than my poker so this is a sub 1% play but will make news more interesting this week.

"Math is Stupid"

  • sirfwalgman: math is stupid
  • sirfwalgman: "I have two children, one is a boy who prefers the colour Red. What is the probability I have two boys".

As we know, without the modifier, the probability is 1/3*

    BB
    BG
    GB
  • sirfwalgman: it's 50/50 that your other kid is a boy period right?
  • sirfwalgman: and whats the difference between BG and GB
  • Me: it is 5050 that you have 1 boy if 1 child
  • Me: it is also 50/50 2nd child is boy
  • Me: it is the classic Let's Make a deal Monty Hall problem
  • sirfwalgman: not according to moronic statistics people
  • Me: dude
  • sirfwalgman: I am currently idle.
  • sirfwalgman: ya
  • Me: you fail to understanbd either problem
  • sirfwalgman: aparently
  • Me: if you have 2 children it is 25 % you will have 2 girls, 25% you will have 2 boys
  • Me: and 50% you have one of each
  • Me: do we agree?
  • sirfwalgman: i said that
  • Me: If child is already born than you have case where questioner intentionally picked boy
  • Me: so there are 3 cases available
  • Me: and 2 of the cases other child is girl
  • Me: but probability of future child being boy is 50/50
  • Me: because questioner has no control

  • I spend a little too much of my time each day trying to explain probabilities to waffles.

Probability from work yesterday:
Project manager came back from his vacation yesterday.
Odds of him applying pressure on slowest part of project when he returned is obviously 100%
(Similar odds of me missing VeryJosie and Mookie also 100%)

One of task was to help newest member of project team get the 10 people who have to approve a board being ready for build to sign off.

I was assigned 4 names randomly, 2 other people got 3 names.

Half of the 10 people had already approved.

What were the odds my 4 randomly assigned people had already approved?
Waffles don't even waste your time answering.

Impacts of Isner v Mahut

The Demon Child is a big tennis fan and she loves Nadal. She has limited interest in playing mostly due to depth perception issues make it difficult for her to return ball.

Yesterday wife asked her to do her one common are chore to load the dishwasher. She was granted a delay in that she was allowed to wait until 'the end of the tennis match she was watching'.

She clutched onto that loophole overnight but she better have gotten off the couch and done the dishes before I get home.

Years from now we will probably have forgotten who won Wimbledon this year but Isner and Mahut will be remembered. It was epic tennis but both players need to work on their return games before I would call this match good tennis. Did they have fewer than 10 break points between them over 138 games?

Poolside adventures

Some of the former residents came back to visit for a poolside Memorial Day celebration. Good food, wine amusing conversation and a lot of little kids. Deepest part of pool is 4 feet so I check on demon child every now and then but am not too worried as she can stand to get out of trouble.

One of the three year olds managed to talk his father into letting him take his flotation assist vest off as he was playing outside of the pool and fell into pool with out any of the parents noticing. Parents did hear his screaming and crying once the demon child lifted him out of the water. He explained to his mom that "daddy let him take off vest" and "he was chasing ball when he fell into pool". Husband is short so he can fit on standard couch. Demon child explained he was giving a good effort treading water but he was not able to keep head above so she helped him out.

Now there is no convincing neighbors demon child is evil

Monday Thoughts

I saw today an LA court has ordered Lindsay Lohan to wear an alcohol monitoring bracelet.

I don't care whether Lindsay is drinking or not but it opened my mind to the possibilities for the next winter gathering.

Bloggers issued ankle bracelets and wagering through (Venetian?) sportsbook on alcohol consumption over the gathering.

Obviously Al would be the favorite for average BAC for a 72 hour time frame but others could sneak in for highest peak BAC.

Saturday I played in a small tournament amongst former co-workers where half the entry fee went to the American Cancer Society.

I managed to chip up early with some well placed OBFVs and one river suckout when I forgot that people don't fold even when they have Ac3c on QhQdJh flop for their tourney life.

150/300 blinds ep limped shorty jammed for 1150, I looking at AQs decided to reraise to isolate and ep called for 2k more holding 22. Shorty had QQ and hit a Q on flop with 2 clubs and turn and river were also clubs rewarding the terribad play holding the 2c.

Listening to him explain for 3 hands why his call was a good play was annoying but thankfully his next terribad play was punished. I was completely card dead at the final table and managed to miss a ton of outs when my KcQ could not run down A2 on AcQc4c flop BvB to bust 2 short of money. Saving grace of the turn was it was 1 rebuy, 1 add on bounty tourney where you collected bounty for stacking even if player added on.

I had told weak tightest player I know "Mess with the bull, get the horns" and managed to collect his bounty chip twice getting 2nd as rebuy period ended. He was allowed to add-on but refused when it did not come with a table change.

BB in SuperTurbo has to call with TT but this hand really sums up how I feel I am running right now.

Monday ran into MP jackAce snap callers with KK and TT and lost to exit Rush Super Turbo KO and Poker from the rail.

I doubt anyone willing to call off a stack with flush draw or gutter has missed calling all in on turn and I can't hit a combo wrap + flush draw against an over pair in PLO.

Fund Raiser

We all read about his train wreck life.

But let's face facts, it transitioned from entertaining to pathetic long ago.

The pretense is he does not want two kids that have inherited half their DNA and been raised in the family environment that is waffles world to "suffer".

At this point I am wondering if Nick will be claimed as a dependent on Waffle's 2020 taxes???

We can continue to let this pathetic excuse for a man continue as Nick and Michelle's doormat or you can send me $100 and receive your very own

doormat. All monies in excess of cost and shipping will go toward rent for waffle's 1st apartment.
At least we can get him out of the house until his wife stops giving him money from his paycheck and his sorry self gets evicted. If apartment is sufficiently distant from his house it could take months for him to walk back to the house. More likely one of his children is old enough to drive and give him a ride back to the house in their car before he mans up and moves.

Happy Mother's Day

Rather than having a dead stack blinding out Al was kind enough to remove me from BBT Invitational on Sunday.

I will be taking my Wife to the Rocky Point Restaurant for Mother's Day. She loves to be near ocean and deserves more credit for how demon child has turned out than I deserve. Despite child's ability to torment me she is pretty good kid. Since I am engineer and generally unaware of subtlety wife was kind enough to tell me she wanted to dine by the ocean on Mother's Day and child was kind enough to text me to make reservations.

I will figure out tomorrow what to send to my Mom. I believe she made an effort to be as good a Mom as she was capable of being and she did create a better environment than what she had. I wish I had 'normal' feelings towards my parents.

Instead Raul Julia as Carlos in Tequila Sunrise said it best:

"You son of a bitch! How could you do this? Friendship is the only choice in life you can make that's yours! You can't choose your family! Goddamn it, I've had to face that! No man should be judged for whatever direction his dick goes! That's like blaming a compass for pointing north, for Chrissake! Friendship is all we have."

Hope my friends have a Happy Mother's Day!

Work Explained

I missed the Poker from the Rail Tournament for the 2nd straight week while working on a small piece of the router above. Unlike smaller companies I have worked for the marketing group at Cisco offers an extensive explanation. I have no idea why the box the size of a dorm fridge needs to have the capacity to carry HD movie to every home in Los Angeles.

I prefer to think of goal as we can deliver the porn to waffles faster than he can pleasure himself.

0/2 this week

Pushing up against project milestones sucks!

I have managed to get home from work in 8-9 range each day this week but positive of being a contractor means direct accumulation of extra money or vacation time. Had to opt for extra vacation time just in case I can get through the minefield poker has become and win Main Event Seat.

I watched a bit of the Mookie and saw 2 chipleaders flipping with ~12 left for ~60 BBs each.

I am just amazed that 22-66 will be re-raisng or jamming when set mining odds are still available.

It is like the super-turbo play has spread everywhere,

Man Card

Weekend Movie Review

Wife and daughter dragged me to "The Backup Plan" yesterday.

1) I feel I need to hand in my Man card but don't know where to turn it in.

2) I wish I had gotten more popcorn instead of watching one scene. Not to provide spoiler but if you see lady with a drum it is a good time for a bathroom break, top off soda or popcorn refill.

While drinking Friday night I was mainly playing low level steps, in step 0 top 30 receive a Step 1 ticket. I am 26th in chips with 31 left when this hand starts.

18% Done

BBT is now 1/6 of the way complete.

Al has created a system without a leaderboard so I will create one of my own.

Douchebag of the BBT5 standings:

1. Dr Tea - Apparently made final table prop bet with xkm1245 over him not final tabling. Not only refused to pay but was still in chat box as Final Table was down to 5 spewing comments.

2. VBPro7 - Started strong, somewhat annoying but busted rather early and actually left tourney.

3. JoelPokerGod - Never actually saw him in chat. This ranking is solely based on past performance.

I made an effort to fill VB's role when he left table but my comment towards JamyHawk were weak.

I also saw VeryJosie in what I think was her first Mookie. I doubt she realized the Mookie wouldn't get to heads up until 11:20 Pacific.
