PLO Tourney Strategy Guide

Since I have had success recently in PLO tournaments and FTOPS Event #2 is the KO PLO I thought I would not so humbly create a post about my "strategic thinking".

First a brief primer on starting hand selection:

Being dealt 4 cards means every player starts with 6 NLHE hands, caveat is that you do have to use 2 cards from hand. AA is the best hold'em hand but an Omaha hand consisting of AdAc9h4s is crap. AA is the only playable combination you hold. You have a pair and realistically need to flop an Ace to continue the hand if anyone shows strength.

A hand such as JsTd9s8d on the other hand consists of 6 mediocre NLHE hands and is an easy hand to play post flop. If you miss fold. If you flop 2p you also have a made straight or oesd. PLO requires ability to imagine possibilities on flop because realistically you should have near nuts or draw to nuts to compete for a big pot. Underboats are poison, 2nd straights & 2nd flushes are expensive.

Edward Hutchison developed a points system for determining starting hands to play, I don't use it but it does give a good picture of what hands are playable and what the win percentage is for a hand in pre-flop all in situation 9 handed. In general you want to restrict starting hand selection to 4 cards that "work together".

How to win a PLO tourney:

1.) In early stages of tourney never raise bad AA out of position. In PLO AA is just a pair.

2.) Cracking AA (or KK) hands is way to accumulate chips early. 4 midde connectors or 3 middle connectors and a pair are excellent AA cracking hands, double suited is nice but non-nut flushes are frequently punished. I am looking to flop a straight or set or top 2 or pair and oesd or wrap. Flopping nuts in PLO is nice but unless it is quads, big boat or straight flush you are vulnerable.

3.) Flop play in PLO is critical. Flopped straights are the most punished hand in PLO. Top set plus flush draw is 3:2 favorite against flopped straight that has no redraw. On flop of 589 holding 67 without redraw is in bad shape against QJT hands. It is important to observe who bets the naked crap flush draws. It is rare for a flop to occur in PLO where you are such a big favorite that the chaser does not have odds to call. Sizing bets so pot odds are not present after turn is sometimes required.

4.) You are going to have to hit some draws.

InstantTragedy and LJ both got to hear my assessment of Chad N Freude's starting hand but desperation is a strategy. I don't recommend playing a hand with 2 gaps and a dangler.

8.) Rarely slowplay in PLO, it takes a huge flop to not get run down.

*** SUMMARY ***

I cashed in $4k PLO tuesday night, one of the 4 card bingo players with AK67 1 suit flopped a flush against my AAKJ ds.

2nd hand of PLO DS a flush chacsing donk drawing to 2nd flush went runner runner straight to put me in "Bayne position".

Apologies for timing out in Bodog tourney, the Stud 8 Skillz series introduced some interesting theoretical developments that Stud 8 experts will be attempting to incorporate in the coming years.

Mookie and FTOPS Wednesday, good luck to all in event #1!

FTOPS VII

Found the chart above as part of FTOPS 5, Event-8 recap. I could not resist posting as I don't even think Smokkee has managed to fold his way to a final table this weakly.

What I do remember about my run in this tournament is that for 1st two hours only hands I raised contained AA2 with one ace suited.

Hands I saw flops with contained AA or A2 or A3 or 4 cards above a 9 (in late position after a few limpers).

Post flop on the few hands I did play I either held the nuts or was drawing to the nuts, it was an evening of very disciplined O8 play and probably aided somewhat by wife and daughter being in Florida so there were no distractions.

In later hours when blinds got high enough that people would fold I opened up starting hand selection in postion and bullied my way to a few more pots and may have exploited my tight image (assuming anyone notices).

Being an Omatard means it is rare for me to be able to play a big field/big buy-in event so I look forward to FTOPS and WCOOP. Just hope I can dodge an inopportune river King this time.

Went out of Monday's $3k O8 as bubble boy when my AA2 ds lost to A338 which called preflop capped betting. He also called a 75T flop with capped betting and caught a 4 then a 2 for wheel.

Went out of MATH when tripJax typically overplayed a little pair and called a jam but sucked out set against my bigger pocket pair. I guess it was only fair since previously he had doubled me up when my mighty Q3s sucked out a flush (and a 3) against his KQ. Congrats on the win.

Bodog Blogger tournament with awesome series prizes and skill game is tonight.

I like when the Congratulations window pops up with 1st in it:

But I also like the tournament window at the end:

Of course while I was splashing around in a smaller PLO tourney Chad was showing off in a STars $27.50 by accepting a $5k chop.

WWBD

After railing MiamiDon during his 19th place run in Wednesday's 50-50, and arriving home 3 minutes too late to play Riverchasers and preventing Donkette from winning so I decided to play 50-50. It has to be easier for me to play WWBD style than Don, plus I play KK a lot better than Don. During 50-50 I only got KK 4 times.

I raise from CO and get jammed fading jackAce:

2nd time UTG aggro raised, I smooth called from button, when he C-bet flop I raised and he jammed:
2nd Break I did take a snap shot of stats to monitor WWBD style, I believe the flops seen is so high because my BB was not raised as often as normal.
Statistics for 170 Hands
Street Saw Saw/Total
Flop 22 13%
Turn 10 6%
River 6 4%
Showdown 4 2%

Street Won Won/Saw Won/Total
Pre-flop 9 5% 5%
Flop 4 18% 2%
Turn 2 20% 1%
River 1 17% 1%
Showdown 3 75% 2%
In my defense the lost showdown was a checked down blind vs. blind hand where opponent flopped a flush. 3 hands I had shown down at 2nd break were flopped set, KK and KK.
My 3rd KK I made early raise and got jammed pre-flop:

Sadly 4th time I got KK I was UTG, raised and everyone folded :(
Was on girlie chat with LJ and sharing hands so I could have switched to WWLD style if I chose. I stuck to WWBD and got down to less than was in pot pre thanks to aggro to my right raising every 3rd hand, I did finally get a couple of pots and got back to 8 BBs, after I got back in decent shape with a race win 66 vs. AQ I picked up QQ UTG and jammed with no action. Having gotten back to 10 BB I needed to consider raising to get action but after being pushmonkey since 100 were left decided raise would have looked stronger than jam. Was at 8 BB when aggro raised UTG+1 to 5k and I chose to re-raise to 16k (all in) with jackAce. After long contemplation he called with QT soooted and hit Q on flop and I went out 36th.
I also played my 3rd SNG sat to FTOPS 2. 1 cash for $41, 1 out 1st hand to 4 card bingo player when double suited Aces were no good and tonight Ka-Ching:

It's late and could supply hand histories but bed calls.
My Super Bowl pick is Pats cover and the over, got to believe Plaxico should have kept quiet about the 17 points so over is the lock. Since Belichek has soft spot for Giants and Pats always win Super Bowl by 3 the over is the better of the two wagers.

So close Mook

I cameoed in Mookie and then watched Mookie get to heads up vs. Surf. Disaster was averted and the curse continued when surf picked up KK to end. Congrats to MiamiDon for going deep in 50/50 with a WWBD style. Congrats to KOD for his return to $28k final table and 6th place finish.

I made a run at $3k O8 but exited 12th when I ran TPTK with gutshot into a bottom pair + oesd that hit trips.

I also got a preview of the spring edition of Dancing With the Stars, I can't wait to hear what Bruno has to say about this:

As a rebuttal to Don's theory I sent ScottMc three hand histories where I requested time to check my pot odds vs. assessment of outs. Clearly none were slow rolls as accused since I was chasing every time. Despite what my new buddy googol would suggest sometimes you just want to take some time to consider options at crucial times.

Jestocost jumped to chip lead with this stellar play but somehow despite having a 2:1 edge on 2nd place with two tables left managed to ride such brilliant decision making to not cash.

Don't spend the $2 bounty all in one place.

In Bodog blogger tourney I was Final Table bubble boy when I lost a race to ScottMc's jackAce.

At least I had the pleasure of completely outplaying MiamiDon early on.

CEM raised to 70, I smooth called with my 98 sooooted and Don in the Blinds called with AA.

Flop was JT7 (1 of my suit, 2 hearts) CEM bet ~pot, I min raised and Don raised to 960. CEM folded I raised (not called raised) for 2nd time on the flop and Don was crippled.

To quote sirfwalgman: "Motherfucking flush chasing s000ted donkey fucks" of course calling 70 chips with 2k+ behind is quite different than calling off 10 BB with chance of winning 4 more with a suited tourist.

Mookie is tonight, I may just shove every frckng hand with a face or ace so I can contend

w00t Math Cash

Took 4th in MATH when JJ in BB lost to QQ raise from button.

No hand in middle stages is memorable as I finished winning a point satellite into Brawl.

And I started playing blogger cash without getting crap for cards. I was in violation of rule #1 (no cash with LJ) but we ended night civil towards each other since bad beat I delivered was for a smaller pot and $16k in cashes in a week has mellowed her.

Congrats OMGitsPokerFool

For taking down the 1st two pushfests solo and tieing for the 3rd. Congrats to Fuel on lucksacking his way to 4th by getting 2 table moves into the blinds. I have no idea who won Mookie but know it was neither Hoy nor Mookie.

My goal of winning $4k PLO was not reached but I cashed.

My effort in the $3k O8 ended on a hand where I flopped the nut high 3rd low with a redraw to a higher straight. Nut flush draw and 2nd flush draw capped betting on flop and turn 4 (which gave me higher straight but I no longer had best low, river 5h gave Nutflush bettor his flush and wheel. I was already all in on turn.

But in 0045 DS PLO a goal was reached:

Apparently Lee can be an FCD as well, he was short, I completed SB pre and bet pot on flop as there were 4 who saw flop. Lee jammed and I was only caller.

Testing the Cooler

MiamiDon has told me coolers are not omnipotent.

I will test that theory with the ultimate cooler vs. the ultimate curse.

Bayne: I want to wager $5 that Hoy or Mookie wins the Mookie tonight
Bayne: you get the field
Bayne: I get those 2
sirfwalgman: lol ok

It would have been wrong to take sides between Hoy or Mookie.

Streak broken

I busted out of $3k PL O8 without cashing. Hand that crippled me was AQQJ ds where I limp called a preflop raise for 10% of stack. Flop was KQT (2 spades, I did not have spades). SB bet 1/2 pot and I jammed him, he called with his A47T (with nut flush draw) and was rewarded with river flush. My FCD repellant has apparently worn off.

Went out of Blogger skill series mainly due to overplaying A3 against Chad, when he bet turn K I decided he had big cards and had 2nd pair rather than was betting TPTK and his A22K scooped. Next hand A36K where limp calling was all in finished me against Chad's A2JJ. Thanks for freeroll Drizz .

Mookie is tonight, password Vegas1 7 Pacific Full Tilt.

Cashed in $3k O8 for 3rd straight night

Was 40 of 40 at one point, 26 of 26 and then 19 of 19 with less than 2 BBs.
But for 3rd straight night I cashed in the 2315 $3k O8. Thanks for late railing B.W.o.P !

Tired and will pimp later. But I should be ready for Blogger skillz, I've already seen some of the worst limit O8 players ever tonight.

Should even be ready for Bodog with added money.

Mission Accomplished

No, not that mission.

Sadly I got a message from that lifeless tard RecessRampagethat his efforts 4 tabling $2/$4 NL 6-max had allowed him to win bet an hour before I cleared. I can only blame the 3 hours Saturday night where I was not playing cash tables becauseI was somewhat busto. I had already committed tokens to Blogger Horse and Big Game, had 27 cents left but was still alive in $3k PL O8. Saturday in PLO I managed to lose hands with an Aces over boat where opponent flopped quads and lost with quad 8s to quad Aces on river Ace.

Finishing 8th gave me a little cash to resume points quest but the lost time gave Recess the edge.

A four way chop in the Big Game gave me my 1st ever Big Game cash (VinNay, Chad and MiamiDon were others) Key hand was against VinNay, he raised my BB light but hit flop harder than me. Money went in on the flop but then I delivered a massive suckout.

MATH is at 10 ET Monday, I am a little crispy from points race but may show up. Part of me wants to just shut down PC for a few days but there are only 20 left in $3k Pl O8 as I write and I am 13th.

Omaha 8 questions

Questions sent in chat while raing B.W.o.P in $3k O8, 15th cash better luck next time.

Bayne: why does someone with nut low raise in O8 just because they are holding 2 threes. (A3 made nut low, I held nut flush)

Bayne: Why does same person raise AKK8 and keep betting when low hits?

Bayne: Why does he bet river, gets raised and calls with pair and using A8 for low when river card made oesd hit?

I don't know the answers to questions but dude dumped a decent portion of his stack to me. Rule of any split pot game is bet when you have high (that is unlikely to be split) or a chance to scoop.

The good news for recess is I only got in 80 hands of 8/16 O8 tonight due to tables breaking up quickly, good news for me is that I won 30 BB/100.

The bad news for recess was I got in 209 hands at 5/10 and bad news for me is I lost 3 BB/100.

I played Mookie and used up good cardma before 1st break. Had AA twice, KK twice and flopped quads with 44 against AA. I also flopped trips a couple of times. After break slow bleed.

Dookie I got off to good start but then went to final table as chip leader but bled off some chips with specultive hands. Then lost a hand to pokerenthusiast when 55 held up against my AKQ and then made a cardinal mistake of going over the top of an obvious AA with a ragged KK.

Riverchasers is tonight but it is Persian food at work, such a dilemma, if I play at work and bust early no problem, if I get home in time I eat some lean dinner with no chance of beef or lamb and can play in comfort.

It does seem to me that 8:1 on money for 5:1 odds I have to call 6th street. Implied Chad tilt odds are just a bonus.

Failed in another effort ro satellite into FTOPS #6, three handed I flopped top 2 pair and a flush draw against bottom 2 pair, turn gave opponent boat and I take bottom cash of $78.40 ($3.40 net profit).

Mookie is tonight!

A Night of Tourney Cameos

I busted out of $4k PLO within 1st 20 minutes, I called a wrap + flush draw on flop, hit turn and pushed giving my opponent 2:1 odds to draw to boat. But EuroMath applies in PLO and he hit.

I restricted my appearance to MATH to around 11 mins. VinNay seemed a little aggro about stealing blinds so when he raised from CO and I had AA in SB I opted for trap. I got all my chips in on the J high 2 spades flop but Hank must be mad at me too and Vinny hit his Queens set on river. Setup to suck out in an instant.

I did win a $75 token in Token frenzy but it was quickly sacrificed when someone chose to draw to his overwrap on a paired board with flush draw present, my trips did not improve, my flush draw did not hit but straight came in. PLO fonkey took my chips and busted out 3 hands later drawing to a flush against a flopped boat.

I did make enough in cash to cover all tourney buy ins plus a little but more importantly continued to accumulate points at a high enough rate to force Recess into tarded decisions.

Congrats to Hoy for satellite win into FTOPS #10

Tonight Chad is hosting the Skill Game on FTP (Razz).

Tonight Smokkee is hosting the Bodog Blogger Tourney with added $T.

Ignoring the Evidence

Despite my January vow of focusing on Omaha, the knowledge that the points tard was working on Saturday led me to try to satellite into the $750k on Saturday. I also attempted an $8.80 36 player SNG into the Sunday Brawl.

The Sunday Brawl sat saw me wounded at Final table when I lost a 3 way pot with AA against AK and KJ when AK went Broadway. I fought back for 3rd and a big fat ZERO instead of the $32 2nd or entry. I did win the $750k sat but faced an intersting dilemma at seat bubble. 22 seats were awarded but 23rd was $198, temptation to take dive and use money for Brawl was high but two others at my table were diving for money too and since Chip Jett was still live I wanted to see if I could also pick up bounty during monkey push time.

I woke up Sunday morning and played a Brawl sat got sucked out on then put full HE skillz to test in Super-Turbo.

Played 2.75 hours in Brawl no KOs, no prizes despite being top 25 1st 15 mins on a flopped set aginst AJ on Ace high flop, then lost a coinflip to a KJo UTG raiser Played $750K for 2.5 hours only to jam a KJs from SB 2k chips 80/160 blinds and get called by a monster QT which flopped a Ten. 5 Hours of play a paltry 224 points earned and a complete ignoring of the evidence that says don't play Hold'em:

I did win a ~75 player $22 ^-max Omaha tourney Saturday, took 3rd in $2k Omaha KO Sunday and was 11th in Sunday night $4k guarantee. I tried a different approach and was in 4th place with 36 left and 36 paid. This is alien to my game and I lost a good number of chips when a favored draw did not hit only to get them back from overpair overplaying tard a bit later.

My FTOPS sats are 0 for 6 at this point with me catching 1 cash prize against Hoy.
Below is my reminder to focus on PLO.

But I also can see from this that 1 Big score can make all the difference!

I may make MATH tonight if I can get upbeat about HE again.

Mission 21k

My battle with Alan continues, I am rested headed into weekend but I know that lifeless tard is capable of 4 tabling $2/$4 6-Max for hours. Biggest leak in my points quest is dabbling in tournaments. The PLO KO at 1615 and the $4k PLO are weaknesses. As well as FTOPS Omadraw sats.
Chad and I played a sat yesterday with some unbelievable tards. I was eliminated by a tard that cold called 2 bets with A89T (ace was suited) but in fairness to that tard raiser had raised KKJ7 earlier (no suits).
Goal for weekend points is set will have to see how the points duel goes.

Return of OmaRoach

As Chad mentioned on MDIT Radio I may have been 35 of 39 as we approached the bubble, managed to double up to get safely in cash. I was probably 22 of 27 when bubble broke and then did my waiting patiently and climbing thing. When I did accumulate a few chips I couldn't hit flops but I was scraping enough that other people at table started to notice. Thought I would clip comments and some hand histories.

No Skillz

PLO with Bloggers was funnier than I expected.

Spent the 1st hour of tournament trying to figure out who knew how to play with 4 cards and picking up smaller pots.

Was in decent shape until I dumped a lot of chips to Columbo on flop where he had nut straight and higher straight redraw. I did have 2nd straight and live flush draw but my higher straight redraw pushed Columbo up a notch too.

Drizz crippled me later when the 3rd consecutive orbit he raised my BB AKQJ managed to lose to AKJT rather than chop the 42% of time it should.

Mookie is tonight 7:00 Pacific, password Vegas1. I unlike RecessRampage am willing to accept that I will only accumulate 7 points in order to spend time on virtual felt with fellow bloggers.

late Breaking Pimp

PLO tonight.

Giving bloggers 4 cards is bound to bring about some 7 way action if all the pretty faces and Aces get distributed right.

After I busted out of MATH, I went searching for how Hoy had done in Monday $1k and stumbled across the next FTOPS schedule. Clearly this is final stage of evil marketing plan, make me play in December, to earn bonus that will drain me then take my hard earned bonus money in tourney entries.

I thought I would also present an Omaha situation that comes up more than you would expect:

Ideally in Poker everytime you call an all-in you are getting in money as favorite but in PLO goal is getting in your money good.

I will use a very straightforward PLO hand to explain:
Player A holds 4s5s7h8h.
Player B holds 8cJdQcKd.
Flop is 6d9dTc.
On the flop Player A has the nut straight, if he bets pot and jams a re-raise he is getting his money into the pot with the nuts. Clearly he is "Getting his Money in Ahead"
Player B has KQ high on the flop, but he has 14 straight outs + 5 additional flush outs + backdoor flush potential. Because of outs he is 75% to win. Player B can got to the felt with this hand because he is getting his "money in as the favorite", which is the preferred place to be.

If instead the betting is such that player A plays to keep pot small on flop and players still have money behind.

If turn is a brick such a 2h.

Player A still holds the nut straight, player B still has KQ high and 19 outs.
At this point if Player A bets pot, player B can look at his hand and see the 19 outs. Calling a pot size bet on the turn gives pot odds of 2:1 and player B's odds of hitting the hand are 42.5%.
Since odds of hitting hand are greater than payoff player B is still getting a favorable gambling situation so is "getting money in good".

Changing the hand of player A to

TsTh7h8h changes the odds so now the 2 hands are 50/50.

8d7cAdAc or 8d7dTsTh in Player A's hands makes situation worse for player B.

So Tired

I entered into poker death match with the points whore.
If I had stopped an hour sooner would have finished the day up! Sadly I had a nut boat vs. 2nd boat go down in flames to a rivered quads with money already in and a boat lose to a rivered gutshot straight flush after money went in on turn. I am sure there was sub-optimal play involved too but those 2 pots combined were $400. At least I cleared ~$100 bonus on day and kept lead vs. Alan in the race for being named biggest sucker at FullTilt.
I'll see everyone at MATH despite it consuming valuable points clearing screen space!

Skipped Riverchasers

Between 6:00 start time and desire to accumulate points with a PLO focus I opted out of Riverchasers. To keep the number of entrants the same I chose to back waffles. My taking a riverchasers beat tilts me and can lead to huge bankroll swings so the $11 investment was prudent and produced a spectacular rant!

Chad has provided excellent guidelines for pre-flop hand selection and play in a blonkament but sadly has not yet provided post flop guide.

Defending against the unimproved big Ace post flop is a key element missing from waffle's game.

I woke up this morning to my wife ranting at a waffles like level. I was groggy so 1st reaction is 1) did I hear a splash and I am guilty of leaving toilet seat up?
2) am I at fault in some other way?

A few minutes into rant when listening comprehension skills got to full functionality I realized that complaint was about the kid's school. It is Bay area so classrooms have doors opening to common areas that are outdoors. Apparently despite the 20-40 mph winds and driving rains kids still had to wait outside the classrooms until 8:15 bell. Making matters worse the 4 teachers per open area that supervise in morning had decided the weather was too harsh to stay outside themselves but did nothing to get the kids under shelter.

The Mookie "Strategy" Guide

I saw this strategy guide of Chad's as a comment on Hoy's blog.

I think you need to devise a whole new plan if you want to win a mookie. Here is my formula for you;

1. Any two face cards see EVERY flop, no matter the price!

2. If anyone goes all in and you have Ace face anything you must call. This includes CALLING the 4th re raise all in with Ace any Face!

3. ANY PAIR is all in, even calling! Even if you get like 44 UTG on the final table you must raise that powerful hand and CALL all re raises!

4. ANY FLUSH DRAW IS ALL IN, calling or betting it doesn't really matter which! When I say any, I mean ANY, like FUEL55 Any two soooooooted!
5. MAKE ANGRY ALL IN CALLS! If you raise and someone shoves on you and you aren't even getting a good price call with T7, 87, A6 it doesn't really matter, just CALL anyway. In closing you have to learn to CALL more. CALLING is the most powerful play in bloggaments!

Here it is though I must point out term is skillful.

I coolered donkette with AA against KK to take chip lead but then bled off chips making a 2k call against Mattazuma getting 2:1 and losing coinflip.
I then raised QQ in EP only to run into Bacon Bikini Mary's KK then jammed with AQ against JustSalems LP raise with monster K4 suited. A flush hit and I go home.

Congrats to wwonka69 on win.

In Omaha DS I went out early with top 2 pair and an oesd to a FCD with a pair of nines and 95 flush draw with 1 card to come, in fairness to FCD it is PL and he was guaranteed 2:1 on his money with his 5th flush draw.

More Brilliant Marketing

Congratulations bayne_s,

Your play on Full Tilt Poker throughout 2007 has earned you an Iron Man "Year End Bonus" of $1050.
For every month that you reached an Iron Man level during 2007, we awarded you with a corresponding number of Bonus Dollars that you can play for starting on January 1st, 2008. Bonus Dollars were awarded on the following scale:
25 Bonus Dollars for every month you achieved Bronze
50 Bonus Dollars for every month you achieved Silver
75 Bonus Dollars for every month you achieved Gold
100 Bonus Dollars for every month you achieved Iron

To receive your bonus, play between January 1st and January 31st to earn the points required to unlock your Bonus Dollars. For every Full Tilt Point you earn in January, $0.05 will be converted into real money.
If you have not earned your entire bonus by the end of January, you will still receive the partial amount you earned on February 1st.
Thank you for your play during 2007 and have a profitable 2008.

Sincerely,

Full Tilt Poker

Another noted points whore got a similar e-mail, this of course led to a prop bet over who could clear more of bonus. At a nickel a point I think a near personal record 21k points is required.

677/day seems so easy to achieve, just what would I do with the 60 bonus medals.

The genius of the marketing is even if every player in a ring game is getting a nickel a point back from FullTilt they still clear 55 cents a point in rake while everyone is increasing playing volume. Odds of busting chasing bonus are sadly greater than zero.

I bubbled in Omahaha tourney in FullTilt. I went out from BB 31st with 27 paying. In a rare move I was an 85:15 favorite post flop with a pp, board pair, oesd and flush draw against a smaller pp, same board pair and lower oesd (with me holding 2 of his outs, with 2 other outs giving me flush). Offsuit straight hit turn and I fall short. Managed to salve my wounds playing 6-max PLO on a 1/2 $80 cap table. It was silly how often draws hit for me and missed for others for a 9 cap profit.

2008 - The Four Card Year

In the days before UIGEA and Neteller went under I would occaisonally go busto on a poker site. Whenever it happened I would go to Bodog Poker, play the $25 PLO tables until I had gained $200 and then moved the gains to another site (usually which provided me rakeback). A year ago I did not like Bodog's game table SW and usually had trouble finding a higher PLO table so it was natural for me to move to a site where I would continue to play PLO or O8 to pay for tourney entries.

In August I managed to obliterate my bankroll playing 6-max PLO at levels beyond reasonable for BR but in November I started playing tourney full ring PLO with success and recently full ring PLO cash with success. Question of "Why play anything else?" and need to answer Miami Don's question "What are your poker Goals?" have led to this list of goals for 2008:

1. Keep better records so I know at the end of each day what games and levels I should be playing.

2. Adhere to stop loss limits each day.

3. Outside of blogger events and freerolls focus play on Omaha to build bankroll to earn enough money to play WSOP preliminary event w/o it meaning BR suicide.

4. Make 2nd day of WSOP prelim event (probably involving 4 cards).

5. Final table a big buy-in online tourney (avoid crumbling under Final Table pressure if anyone has a piece of me).

6. Win the $4k Guarantee PLO once this year.

7. Don't go bust on any site!

8. Don't piss off any bloggers with my posts or comments. Plays at tables to tilt are part of big picture. I'm sorry to anyone I pissed off this year!

AirMax1978 (Observer): dumb luck

Details later, I am tired.
1st key hand, I had AAA2 (1 suit) and got to see a cheap multiway flop. Flop was all spades and holding naked As, I bet pot and got 1 caller, another spade hit turn and I bet pot again and
AirMax1978 checkraised jammed turn which forced a fold but gave valuable insight into
AirMax1978's game. But I went from lots of chips to relatively short.

I typed in girlie chat to Chad what are my chances of cashing in DS Omaha tonight and sent having bled chips to point of sitting 17th of 19th when this hand occurred:

ICroupier: awful
Before Aussie Millions trip I would have never played hand like this. I had watched 200/400 6-max PLO and seen Gus, sbrugby and Phil Ivey make plays I just could not fathom. But I had opportunity to talk to Gus and he said "with a pair and a gutshot if you are up against a set you are crushed but against an overpair not so bad". Afterwards I started plugging these hands into cardplayer's calculator and realized those guys were just pushing smaller edges for larger sums.

In hand above it is 50-50 after flop, it is presence of 86 in ICroupier's hand that makes it close. If either card is replaced by an Ace or deuce I am 55-45 favorite.

At final table start chip counts were:

Seat 1: NemDeGelt (5,947)
Seat 2: adler10 (2,430)
Seat 3: bayne_s (6,344)
Seat 4: ICroupier (5,281)
Seat 5: ThePussyBomber (10,028)
Seat 6: allinryou (8,407)
Seat 7: THEJAQKT (27,799)
Seat 8: AirMax1978 (23,177)
Seat 9: skymutt (12,587)

Then NemDeGelt knocked out 3 shorties in one hand (oof, I needed some of their chips)
Seat 1: NemDeGelt (21,965)
Seat 3: bayne_s (6,344)
Seat 5: ThePussyBomber (10,028)
Seat 7: THEJAQKT (28,499)
Seat 8: AirMax1978 (22,877)
Seat 9: skymutt (12,287)

The longest playdown to bubble occurred as I was very patient and in huge surprise we did not lose 2 people, I managed to double up with a fullhouse in a battle of blinds to get workable chips.

Bubble broke with this for chip counts:
Seat 3: bayne_s (11,518)
Seat 7: THEJAQKT (27,272)
Seat 8: AirMax1978 (46,073)
Seat 9: skymutt (17,137)

Chad appeared in IM at this point laughing and asked me to IM when I got to HU.

I re-raised AirMax pre to get a few chips since I was sure he was raising light, won a straight over straight hand against skymutt which led to his elimination and entered 3 handed play at:

Seat 3: bayne_s (14,218)
Seat 7: THEJAQKT (45,009)
Seat 8: AirMax1978 (42,773)

nice thing is they are even so both want to take me out but the one who doubles me is in 2nd place tie. Airmax opted to bring me to him with my 2 pair besting his 2 pair and me catching a bluff by air after he got some chips from THEJAQ closed gap to:
Seat 3: bayne_s (27,436)
Seat 7: THEJAQKT (36,509)
Seat 8: AirMax1978 (38,055)

Three way action took 28 hands and I had THEJAQ all in once where we both had nut straights but I had flush redraw and higher straight redraw but no freeroll love and AirMax took him out so HU started and I IMed Chad as promised.

Chip counts:
Seat 3: bayne_s (36,636)
Seat 8: AirMax1978 (65,364)

I also caved and ordered daughter an ipod, her reaction when I forwarded her that it had shipped: "It's a little late"

Congrats to LJ on Riverchasers victory. I got some chips early but then took on a coin flip with boofdiggity and lost 34th consec all in flip

What am I thinking?

I took a look at this last night on OPR. I looked at my PLO stats since Friday night and saw a $950 profit at $50 PL, $100 PL and $200 PL, ( but sadly dropped $440 screwing around at $600 PL, half of the losses when an AAKK ds lost to a K975 after a K9 flop went 2 runners for a straight which also missed my flush draw).

Chad C popped up on "girlie chat" last night with 3 tables left in $4k guarantee PLO to ask me "Why the fu*k do you play anything else?" I quickly dumped a lot of chips when I flopped trips against a better kicker and he hit boat rather than me dropping me from 6th to 24th but as I told Chad I would still cash because I could hit sit out next hand and 8 people would bust out before I blinded out. I don't know if it is the lack of antes or how quickly everyone busts out but as the bubble approaches players usually have 6 or 8 BBs and a patient shorty can always cash if that is goal.

Other than blogger events and the $75 token frenzy I plan to give up Hold'em tournaments for a while. My success in the 0045 DS Omaha has helped restore my bankroll to workable levels. Cranking through FullTilt bonus in January will help as well. And my recent run in $100 buyin Omaha tells me to focus on Omaha. I have also determined that playing Omaha as often as I do does lead to very weak/tight Hold'em play and I don't transition well.

The Days are getting Longer

I was watching CBS' The Early Show this morning and learned that a 4th Century Pope had declared December 25th the birthdate of Jesus, the reason was to coincide with the Roman celebration of the winter solstice (a time when gifts were exchanged to celebrate the return of the sun).

The things I learned this year:
1) When the teenage daughter sees you wrapping the ipod nano you got for wife and says "Mommy is not a teenager", the translation is "I want an ipod".
2) After an hour of listening to her complaining about various things centered around not getting ipod that she never hinted for before Sunday it may amuse your wife and self to suggest same daughter has a spelling error on her "Abercrombie & Fitch" t-shirt but wrath of daughter is severe when said out loud.

Statistically one in 24 times I pick up JJ someone else at the table is supposed to have KK. Currently it feels like 12 times of 24 I will run into KK and 10 times I will run into AK and lose the race.

I cashed in Omaha $55 DS again. Went out with a straight but Chico134 was en fuego and turned quads. 3rd did not suck.

I would try to create an Omaha strategy post but I believe you accumulate majority of tournament chips when you crack AA and when someone else fails to crack your AA. Key to either case is being able to properly evaluate the flop.

Late breaking addition Sundays with Dr. Pauly TOC wow I won somehow.

$18k cooler

What a hand to decide TOC, huntsvegas and jeciimd both trapping on the flop. Money goes in on the turn and river 7s improves both hands. Congrats to both on a well played tourney. GL in Aussie Millions jec! My one observation from last year is Australians are optimistic and believe their draws will hit. You will see it at Blackjack tables as well.
I was in the other freeroll and dumped my chips to AlCan'thang with JJ against his KK. It was shameless attempt to reward him for his efforts in BBT 2 and not a donkish play ;)

I need 4 Cards

Congrats to LJ for taking down the Mookie. A8 seemed to be the new nutz on Full Tilt as Gary Cox hit 4 of a kind with A8 against LJ's AJ earlier at final table but Gary's AT was no good against A8 on final hand. I donked out early with TPTK against flopped set, I may have forgotten how to play poker with only 2 cards. I did bubble in Dookie

A big thank you is in order for the Big Pirate! My package of southern delicacies (bacon, grits and country ham) arrived yesterday. Wife was on the warpath when she saw contents and uttered phrase "she knows you are not supposed to have this" and was ready to call my mother lighting her up. Luckily wife mentioned the bacon and an ugly family conflict was averted when I remembered the bounty. My mom usually sends me a Christmas package containing grits and country ham and wife had asked my mom not to this year. So big woot on avoiding a sentence of turkey bacon.

As an offshoot of a chat I had with MiamiDon I decided to create a 2nd blog yesterday:
Hoy Synopsis, sadly I suspect that despite me not adding any original content it will take more time for me to distill Hoy posts than to create my ownposts.
